We ended our stay in Luxor with a mid-afternoon snack of self-made omlette, cunningly contrived to be eaten just prior to boarding the foodless 16 hour bus journey to Sharm-el-Sheikh, Sinai. There are 'quicker' ways to get there; for a heck of a price you can get a bus to Hurghada, and a ferry across to 'Sharm', and it only takes about 7 hours or so... however, the ferry only runs every now and again and we'd have been stuck in Hurghada for two days waiting for it. So, we took the 'straight through' bus... up to Suez on the west side of the Red Sea, and back down the whole of the East side, finally arriving at Sharm at about 10am. Well after hitching a ride in the back of a truck for two hours, I arrived in Dahab, a quaint little town perched on the Red Sea Coast. West are the ominously stunning mountains of the Sinai, to the North is the small Jordanian border of Aqaba and directly East and just across the Gulf are the violently striking peaks of Saudi Arabia. A truly overwhelming panoramic view irrespective of which way you gaze. Dahab translates from Arabic to English as "Gold" and is reminiscent of what I imagine Ko Samui to have been before the massive tourist influx. It encompasses a smooth fusion of backpacker's mellowness and local's humorous and apathetic sales pitches, all set against a décor of craggy golden beaches under a rugged mountain backdrop and dark blue seas. Sunday, June 10, Dahab is a city which grew up around the Red Sea dive site “The Blue Hole” It became famous and busy, frequented mostly by divers and backpackers, and was apparently a place where a cheap good time was available, along with cheap drugs as well. Last April a bomb went off in Dahab and tourism is way off, particularly from Americans, who are so noticeably absent that merchants frequently asked us why there were so few American tourists compared with previous years. I guess the predominant tourist these days is Russian or German. We haven’t seen a whole lot of other tourists, either.
