Stuck in Horghada Leaving Luxor, I took a five hour bus trip across the Eastern Arabian desert and through the Red Sea Mountains to the coastal port town of Hurghada. This was to be a jumping off point for me to get over to the Sinai Peninsula, destination - Dahab, Egypt. I arrived into Hurghada Saturday evening and hoped to pass through quickly but unfortunately learned that the next high speed ferry across the Red Sea would be early Monday morning. I checked into my $7 per night hotel room and bided my time exploring the local bazaars and visiting the lone Western outpost in town, The Hard Rock Café. Again, like all the other towns so far, I seemed to be the lone American, amongst an array of European and Asian travelers, most of which ... read more

by far the clearest water I have ever snorkled in, and the coral and fish were amazing too! Dahab is a little Diving town on the coast of the Sinai region up in the north of Egypt, perfectly set up for relaxing and exploring the magical underwater world of the Red Sea. We stayed for a few days and just read books, snorkled and treated ourselves to the cheap, quality food you find in all the restaurants along the waterfront. everyone in the world would love this place, without a doubt. After a good few days of doing nothing, our batteries were recharged and we headed south to what we soon found out was the real Egypt. I needed to get out of Cairo, if even for just a weekend. Emily was off to Dahab to finish her diving certification, and Mallory, Heather, and I were tagging along in hopes of getting some well needed relaxation. Words too soon spoken, I guess. The bus we rode in was anything but relaxing, as it was almost an hour late, took three hours longer to get to Dahab than we were told, and played the Quran at full echoey blast until Iftar. We got into town at 1am, and much to our dismay, the car that was supposed to pick us up to take us to our hotel wasn't there- only a pick up truck and several shady looking guys pestering us about where we were headed. A short phone call to our hostel directed ... read more

So here it is, my final blog of Kevin's Middle East Vacation 2006, summarizing my time in the fabulous town of Dahab, on the Egyption Sinai coastline. This is actually the second time I've been here, the first being last year, as part of my three week trip through Egypt. The main reason I came back is becuase the first time around I was not a good enough diver to do any of the really good diving sites, but this year I am. As such, this final portion of my trip was intended primarily as a diving vacation to Dahab and the surrounding area. But anyway, to pick up from where I left off in Israel, I spent the night in Eilat, then got up early in the morning to cross the border into Egypt. The ... read more

The final leg of our journey was in Dahab, a diving paradise in the Red Sea. Taz and I decided we couldn't really wish for a better dive site then the Red Sea to get our Advanced Open water qualifications.. So for 2 days, we dived ourselves into a coma - really beautiful - particularly the blue hole and canyon, and explored an entirely different type of aquatic life. Lionfish abound with the ragged tooth sharks being largely absent; replaced by new coral formations and a refreshingly varied underwater menagerie. Had James, Rich and Raiman and Olie with us which made a really fun and exciting group! what lovely friends! To all the dive enthusiasts, although there are lots of tourists, the red sea is a definate must!... read more

Sunday July 23, 2006 - Well, I slept terribly and arrived in Dahab in a less than good mood. Met at the station by reps of the hotel the Canadians had recommended, so I went there. There was no room for me yet, so I waited 30 minutes while they cleaned one. Afterwards I got a shower and went for a walk around. Everything is pretty much at the water front and very touristy. I decided I didn't like it immediately. Even though everyone loves it here. There is no real beach, so I couldn't figure out what to do or where to go, unless you went to one of the many restaurants with cushions to relax on. But this isn't my style. I walked the length of Dahab and then back after some internet (air-con!) ... read more

Shared taxi from Pigeon House to Sharm bus station...lots of cops and the driver still tried to steal from me. For those interested, there are a few daily buses from Sharm to Dahab and they only cost about $2 USD. Easy bus ride as it took a little over 1 hour through baren landscape of Sinai. I land in town and search for a place as I walk the boardwalk and find the prices are too high especially as it is low seaon and since its just a month after the bombingm vacancies are high. I finally settle on the small hotel called Nirvana. I get a good room for $10 USD per night. I decided to dive with Nirvana as it was recommended by the dive shop in Zanzibar. Dahab is a great sleepy little ... read more

This one is a long time coming....We left Egypt almost a month ago and are now settling down in London for a bit of a long haul. Egypt was a country full of beauty, mystery, heat, annoyances, and stunning scenery. Once again, we are so going back there. We started in Cairo and arrived at about 9:30pm and the heat hit us as soon as we stepped off the plane. The flight was delayed by about 2 hours so we were wondering if our taxi driver from the hostel we had booked would still be there, thank goodness he was cause as soon as we walked out of the airport we were bombarded with people wanting to "help" us and take our bags to their taxis etc... We arrived that night and arranged to go on ... read more

Well, as everyone else... hehehe... we need some vacation too, we were traveling in a strong pace and visiting places was becoming boring because we were always tired. So we decided to stop in a relaxing place for more than only three days, the chosen place is Dahab in the Sinai Peninsula in Egypt. I know you may think we are crazy because in the last 24 of May were some terrorists attacks here. But the place is great and cheaper than many other places we have been before. We pay less than two US Dollars for the night in the hotel. There is many great diving and snorkeling places... yes, this is the famous red sea.... where we can sea a great diversity of big fishes, including turtles, moreias, araias, dolphins, Sharks, Lion fishes and ... read more

Exploring Egypt First and foremost, we're throwin' out a BIG Happy Birthday to Mom! Yes, she is a year older on April 14th but doesn't show it a bit! She doesn't sell her secret, but her recipes are occasionally negotiable for trade. So for all those in Akron, give her a big b-day hug for me! As some have gathered, but others don't know the blog entries thus far have been all thanks to Ryan's wit and charm, with occasional editing (only when time permitted) by me, Katelyn. However, Ryan is on vacation this week, and I will be your blogger for tonight. Egypt: a country of living contradictions at first sight, all of which you come to love.
