The ferry from Aqaba to Nuweiba (in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula) is supposed to take an hour. On top of this you need to allow considerable time to work out where to actually go. You have to get a taxi out to the ferry terminal, then go into a run-down building that from the outside looks pretty deserted to buy your ticket, then go downstairs, to a room that’s again from the outside looks completely deserted, to pay your departure tax, then go upstairs again with that receipt to get your passport stamped, in the counter just next to the one where you bought your ticket. After this you have to go back down again, to get out of the building, walk across a sort of large loading zone and wait for a bus to take you ... read more

After an early start where we tried to sleep in as Long as possible before making a mad dash for breakfast and somehow getting your belongings organized we were shoved into the bus and driven from Africa to Asia (under the suez canal, through alot of desert and through some beautiful mountains) to the coastal town of Dahab, located an hour or so south of the border to Israel (and the crossing to Jordan) on the Red Sea. After enduring the crazy heat along the Nile it was great to see the coast again. After checking into dahab paradise resort I met my new room mate (An Australian by the name of Matt was my old one) who was English chap who served in Iraq named Rob. Both great guys. After a bit of free time ... read more

Greetings from Dahab. We arrived yesterday after a 19 hr bus journey from Luxor, being the only tourists on the bus we had no idea where we were stopping but we did get to listen to a lot of Arabic music and watched an Arabic film! We arrived at the bus station in Dahab that has taxi's that consisted of pick up trucks that you just jump in the back off. With the manic driving and the wind and dust tearing thru us, it soon woke us up! Were now staying in a garden shed ontop of the hotel, its different, but at least its a bit cooler here. Went quad biking yesterday afternoon in to the desert to an oasis into a Bedouin village, which turned out to be an oasis with sheds full of ... read more

jet lag? pffft... jet lag laughs in the face of tarn and steve! Ok, so a bit more sleep in Hong Kong might have helped. 40 degree heat, 5 flights and little sleep over the past 60 hours and it finally catches up with us, basically losing our brains and acting like zombies for two days! Once we recovered though we found our lovely little niche of Dahab and enjoyed a "honeymoon" week of sun, surf, snorkelling, delicious egyptian food and generally relaxing and unwinding. the eel garden cafe on the beach 2 minutes from our little oasis hideaway provided us with delectible dishes and our friendly local treat shop kept us in baklava and a multitude of random yumminess. we quickly made friends with the neighbourhood camels, cats and goats, which helped us with missing ... read more

Dahab, Sinai Peninsular, Egypt 30 April - 10 May The flight out of Gatwick was uneventful and landed about 7.30pm local time in Sharme el Sheik. From there it was one hour and 15 min transfer to the hotel in Dahab. The thing about Egypt is that in 1996 there were some terrorist’s attacks on tourists and now almost all tourist places have check points on the roads leading into towns and cities. It’s a bit weird if you haven’t seen it before, the driver yelling information to the police and then the police yelling back. Can be quite daunting. After an hour driving through the desolate place of the Sinai, you realise nothing grows here, it is sand and rocks and camels. That’s it. No plants no trees, yet people still live here. They call ... read more

On our return to Cairo we picked up where we had left off with applying for visas. We reached the conclusion that irrespective of our ability to get Russian visas, we would need a Chinese visa if we wanted to see anything of the country other than Hong Kong. Naively we assumed that few Egyptians would be applying for Chinese visas and therefore, getting a visa would be a relatively straightforward task. How wrong we were. From the what we saw, we can conclude that before long a significant proportion of the billion or so people in China will be Egyptian. With Egyptians not being renowned as early risers, we thought that arriving at 7am, an hour and half before the embassy opened, would secure us a decent a position in the queue. Sadly we were ... read more

After Mt. Sinai I think we were all pretty exhausted so once we got to the hotel, we slept, or tried to sleep by the pool. The following day we all went snorkelling in the Blue Hole! The Blue Hole is known as after a few metres from shore it drops suddenly to 633ft. It attracts divers and snorkellers alike from all over the world to marvel at its coral and spectaclar geography. From out of the water you can see light blue where the coral starts and then a sudden dark blue which shows where hole just drops away. From the surface of the water and just looking down through our masks we swam over shauls of brightly coloured fish, coral, jelly fish and a number of minute divers in the depths below. You cannot ... read more

In the afternoon at 4pm went left the town of Huargada and started the long drove to Mt. Sinai. We were in a small mini bus that lept about two feet in the air every time we went over the smallest of bumps. Sleeping was impossible and so when we arrived at Mt. Sinai at 02:20am, most of us were like zombies. Mt. Sinia is where Moses went to get the ten commandments from God for the villagers. It is the highest mountain in Egypt and stands at 2285m. There are two paths you can take, the camel path with is a gradual ascent and takes two and a half hours and then there is the more punishing route 'the steps of penitence' which has 3750 steps. St. Catherines Monastry lies at the foot of the ... read more
