2301 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt In an effort to lead with my mistakes, I must confess that I've been posting on the wrong time zone. I've been noting the time zone as GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) +2, when in fact it is now, and has been since my arrival, GMT +3. Not that it really matters for any practical purposes, but Cairo went into daylight savings time the night before I arrived, thus changing from +2 to +3. So, in the interest of accuracy, I shall begin noting the correct time. Today marked the end of the first week of classes, and thus far things are going well. Looking at it now, I think I did just the appropriate amount of preparation in Arabic before I arrived. I studied just enough to be used to the ... read more

0639 (GMT +2) Giza, Egypt A small addendum to my previous post. I forgot to mention that I was happily awakened from a dead sleep at about midnight on Sunday night, by a telephone call from the front desk, letting me know that my checked bag had arrived from the airport. So, I am complete once again. -MG ... read more

1658 (GMT +2) Giza, Egypt My apologies to all for being out of contact for so long, but it's been a busy couple of days. On Sunday morning (2 May), I woke up mostly refreshed. After a long and sleepless Friday night, and a full day of walking on Saturday, I crashed very early, and slept nearly eleven hours. That was a much needed rest. Registration and placement testing at my school was scheduled for 0930 on Sunday, so I had breakfast, then hit the streets and made my way to the school. I decided to try walking, instead of taking a cab, for two reasons. First, I wanted to get a handle on finding my way around the streets. Second, I was still recovering from my drive from the airport. Based on my walking on ... read more

1306 (GMT +2) Giza, Egypt To pay off something I said before, technically I am in Giza, not Cairo. What we think of as Cairo is actually two different cities separated by the Nile. Cairo proper occupies the east bank of the river, and Giza the west. Though they are both considered part of Greater Cairo, from what I understand they each have their own city government and different governors. Think of Los Angeles, and the many different individual municipalities that make up what we consider to be one big city. You may also note that the Giza Pyramids are located on the west bank, in Giza. To be even more specific, I am currently located in the northern area of Giza, a neighborhood (if you can call it that) called Mohandeseen. Nevertheless, I will probably ... read more

Thursday April 22, 2010 aboard the MS Miriam. OH MY GOD! What a boat, what a view and what a meal, but I am jumping ahead. As you may recall I pooped out last night at 11:00 PM while writing this blog so I only got so far on Wednesdays activities. So allow me to continue We are still at the Giza Plateau and the sites are beautiful and a great statement of man’s achievement marred only by the presence of hawkers. And aggressive hawkers at that. Let me explain (or rather complain). Soon as you make eye contact you are a target. They walk up to you ask where are you from and somehow they have been there. Then, they hand you something and say it is a present, and a second later they want ... read more

Its a horrible cliché but I confess that the tune of the eighties girl group hit was running throughout my head on numerous occasions in the days ahead. All I can say in my defence is that I was not alone, and reference to Walk like an Egyptian, either in tune or action, did come to the fore at various moments of our travels. Setting out with our Oasis crew for the first time, our day began in grand fashion with a visit to the Antiquities Museum with local guide Wasim. Understanding more about Egypt in the Ancient World was the main aim as we wandered about this museum rich with treasures from the Ancient, Middle and New Kingdoms. It was my first introduction to the history of this civilisation, having only vague recall of a ... read more

Day four now racked up in Giza and moving to another Hotel in Cairo today. Joining up with a tour for the next 10 days. Have been feeling a bit unwell for the last 24 hours; I think this is the virus everyone talks about after being here for a while. Headache, Bodyache and temperature, have been trying to get loads of rest and drinking heaps of water.. A little better today so hopefully its passing in preparation for the next 10 days as I will be travelling a lot: Trains, buses and boat. Just realised that my birthday is only a mere 3 days away on the 11th! I will be board an overnight train the night before and will awake the next morning on the 11th in Aswan: Egypt’s southern most city. There I’ll ... read more

My first word is Tired! Very tired.. The first couple of days in Egypt now racked up and with it a mixture of feelings.. Its incredibly dry and a continuous haze looms above hiding the sky. Almost everything is covered in a film of sandy dust distorting the view of anything colourful. The first big test of courage came about yesterday. Taking an afternoon stroll down the Pyramids from my hotel which was around 30 minutes walk. Locals everywhere recognising that I am a tourist, in fact I think mostly I was the only foreigner amongst the bustle of the main street leading down to the Giza Plateau. Constantly being stopped to buy something or offers of directions or to get a taxi for me. All ploys to gain gratuity. Some often lying tome saying that ... read more

Hi everyone, STill going on about Cairo and our time there - because it's the only time we would ever go there... first we went to the Pyramids which took up most of the morning and a museum too. John thinks the pyramids are a stack of old rubble but found it interesting - the history etc and fascinating because we were there and had heard about them throughout our lives. It was quite hot there during the day and not freezing like it was the night before at the Sound and Light show. We had lunch at the Meridien where the Marachi band with bagpiples greeted us on our arrival - very noisy buggers too but nice to be welcomed like that. From there we went another lot of pyramids and then to the Papyrus ... read more

We are having a great time here. We arrived in Cairo 3 hours late because of a sandstorm at the airport. We waited it out on the tarmac in Sharm el sheikh, which is on the red sea across from Saudi Arabia. When we finally got to Cairo we spent day 1 in Islamic Cairo, then onto a small island in the Nile which is where the American and British embassies are and some nice pubs and restaurants. On day 2 we woke up and saw the pyramids, sphinx and Egyptian museum. We took care to relax in their comfortable cafes, drinking hot peppermint tea, coffee and smoking sheeshah. We then took the overnight sleeper train to Aswan, which is in the far south. The 12 hour trip went by comfortably sleeping in our little cabin, ... read more
