30 May 2010 1651 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt Tonight will mark the end of my first month in Cairo. In some ways it has been a very long month, and in others it seems to have just flown by. Whatever the case, I have had the opportunity to make various observations on life in Cairo. This is not meant to be a complete and scientific statement, nor am I trying to be unduly harsh. Again, this is simply a small and random selection of observations that I’ve made in my limited time in country. -There does not seem to be a big concern over outward appearances when it comes to this city. Of course, here I am not speaking about individual dress and mannerisms - for that is certainly important - but rather the city itself. ... read more

29 May 2010 2329 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt When I woke up this morning I had absolutely no plans, or any plans to start planning something. Within fifteen minutes I had the idea of getting out, a plan in place, and was ready to start moving. Ever had one of those days? Today’s adventure would take me to a different part of Cairo: Islamic Cairo, specifically, the Citadel. Originally, my plan was to go solo, and try my hand at walking to the Citadel. I try to get out for a long walk at least once a week, usually on the weekends, and after walking to Coptic Cairo, few places really seem all that far right now. I estimated that it would take about two hours. If I was going to do this, I needed to ... read more

23 May 2010 2153 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt Saturday was an interesting day. I experienced the Mogamma, where I had to go to renew my visa. The Mogamma is a government building downtown on the Midan Tahrir. In Egypt, your initial tourist visa is good for one month. If you plan on staying longer, you have to go to the Mogamma to renew. You can extend your visa for up to six months, I believe. The building houses several different bureaucracies, and can be something of a challenge to navigate. I’d certainly read some nightmare stories, so I chose to go early, and keep my whole day open just in case. Nobody really explained the whole process, though, so that's what I will attempt to do here. As it turned out, my experience went rather smoothly, ... read more

21 May 2010 0810 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt The third week of classes are finished, and next week is the last week of this course. I wish I had something further to report, but it's been a pretty uninteresting week. More later. -MG ... read more

21 May 2010 1722 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt Lewis Black once said: "There is no better moment than this moment, when we’re anticipating the actual moment itself. All the moments that lead up to the actual moment are truly the best moments. Those are the moments that are filled with good times. Those are the moments in which you are able to think that it is going to be perfect when the moment actually happens. But, the moment is reality, and reality, always kind of sucks." After three long weeks in country - a little less than a quarter into my stay - I needed some escape from reality, even if only for a while. What’s my favorite means of escaping reality - aside from spending some quality time with The Big Fellow? Why, going to ... read more

15 May 2010 1948 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt I got an itch this morning to actually go out and see something - to play tourist for the day. After two weeks of being in country, I’ve finally come to a place where I’m comfortable enough to venture out. Where should I go? Alexandria? Not yet, let’s keep it in town for now. The pyramids? Not on your life. No, today I decided to go visit Coptic Cairo. And I must say it was definitely worth it. I left early, at about 0800, to avoid the heat of the afternoon sun. My forecast called for a high of 102 F (39 C, for the rest of you), and I really didn’t want to be out too long in that. Since I had all day, and I set ... read more

13 May 2010 2232 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt So last night a few students decided it would be fun to check out the Khan al-Khalili. Having nothing else really to do with my time, I decided to join them. If you ever get the chance to go....pass. Well, maybe not so fast there. For those who may not be aware, the Khan al-Khalili - or simply the Khan - is one of the oldest and largest bazaars in the Middle East. According to my guidebook, the original Khan was built in 1328. Since then, it has vastly outgrown its original boundaries, incorporating many of the nearby markets and souqs, and taking up several city blocks. Located on the Cairo side of the river in Islamic Cairo, the Khan is a major tourist attraction, and a popular ... read more

13 May 2010 1805 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt The second week of classes came to a close today, and I continue to make acceptable progress. It's odd, as it seems as though this week flew right by. I basically spend all day in class, and a significant portion of my evenings engrossed in homework. Both classes - Egyptian Colloquial Arabic, and Modern Standard Arabic - are equally as interesting, in slightly different ways. ECA is the dialect of Arabic spoken, obviously, in Egypt, although it is understood throughout the Middle East. In part, this is because Egypt was the center of entertainment (the Hollywood, if you will) for the Middle East for decades. One should not assume, though, that Egyptian Arabic is vastly different from any other dialect of Arabic in the world. It is all ... read more

9 May 2010, Sunday 2110 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt I said it's so hot I saw a little guy in an orange robe burst into flames. Yes it was. Today the temperature in Cairo reached a balmy 109F (That's 42C, for the rest of you). I figured today was a good day for some indoor activities since more than a few minutes away from the air conditioning and I start sweating like James Gandolfini. I did some homework this morning then went with a German student downtown to the American University in Cairo bookstore. It was interesting. There were two security personnel outside, and we had to show ID and sign a register to get in. Once inside though, I was right at home. Most of the books were in English, and they had a wide ... read more

8 May 2010, Saturday 1948 (GMT +3) Giza, Egypt Yesterday, as I ended my first week in Cairo, I had the opportunity to witness the Friday afternoon prayer. Of course, I did not take part myself, rather I enjoyed it from my apartment balcony. First of all, a brief note about Friday prayers. (I make this disclaimer ahead of time that I am not a Muslim, but I do study Middle East and Islamic history. Thus, if I get something wrong, I am open to correction.) One of the five pillars of Islam is salat, the five daily prayers. The time of each prayer varies from day to day, and is set by the time of year. In fact, there are many publications and software programs that calculate the exact time of prayer. At the prescribed ... read more
