Today, after a lovely buffet breakfast at our hotel, we headed out to see the Great Pyramids. Our first stop was at the Pyramids themselves. These things really are quite spectacular, very . . . big. Didn't go in one, apparently you have to get there very early to do so and buy a special ticket. The most memorable thing about this visit was the swarms of vendors that accost you the whole time you are in the area. Make eye contact with one and they will follow you for 10 minutes. Take anything they hand you and they won't accept it back. Shake their hand and they'll put goods on your arm. Of course, Dad gets in a long conversation with one - picture attached. No sir, we are not going to walk over ... read more

Untitled Hello Cairo We arrived late at night to Egypt at last! Land of a thousand wonders and what seems like a thousand days of history education when I was in elementary school! Or, as my mother says, "land of really old rocks." Due to my travelling schedule at work and my halfhearted attempt to learn Arabic before my journey here, my friends were saying they secretly suspected I was in the CIA. BUT - on our arrival here I would say there was more evidence that my Dad had secret connections - who knew???? Is contract management for healthcare just a front? But as we were on our way in our tour operator shuttle to our hotel with two other ladies the driver answers his cell phone - and it's for DAD! Huh? We get ... read more

No shit, there I was… The flight from Munich was painless, along with finding the most reliable for of public transportation to the city center. I found myself sitting on a flat decked boat with a polluted and dirty sky on the horizon. The noise from the streets echoed over the water at dusk, the advertisements in the sky, suspended by wire and steel advertising KFC, to Nokia phones, and even a Cocola add featuring a ripped-off image of Chech marten. But besides all that I was on the water, and traveling a pathetically short distance of the Nile River. But this was Egypt, a land of adventure and wonder, this was the start of my great crusade across the Middle East… While in Munich, I met some young Americans. Tony, a well built and bearded ... read more

So, turns out I forgot to mention I visited some pyarmidy things. Photographic evidence is attached. I'll post more when I get a chance, but basically whilst some people in our group were a little disappointed, I was still just blown away. If you have even the slightest interest of appreciation of engineering or construction, you have to be. The largest pyramid is 136m tall, made up of 2.2 million stone blocks each with an average weight of 2.5 tonnes. It's just insane. Consider that pretty much every other construction from ancient history - the other 6 wonders, ancient rome/greece, much of angkor wat, mayan pyramids, karnak, etc are all either moderately or largely destroyed. Most of these are 1000 to 2000 years old. The pyramids are 5,000 years old, and still in fantastically good ... read more

Cairo-Pyramids, Pyramids-Cairo, the two words are inevitably linked although there are pyramids to be found elsewhere. For me it is particularly fitting that the Pyramids are our last stop on this trip. The Pyramids have been the top of my ‘must see’ list for many years. Together with a Nile trip, and we are about to achieve both during this flying visit. The flight from Cape Town crossed the African continent, for 9 hours glimpses of Africa were visible through the cloud cover. Little detail from 38000 feet but one can get a feel for the sheer scale of the landmass below. For the first time we neither gain nor lose time, Cape Town and Cairo are both GMT+2. We arrive at 7pm, it is dusk and since we were up at 5am, sleep sounds ... read more

So...like a lot of people I suspect, Bryan and I have been thinking about visiting the great pyramids since we were very little. Finally, today was the day. Unfortunately, we were both feeling way "none the better" for the 10% beer of last nights gala event, and the early wake up call to pack/eat/load bus was a sorry state of affairs between the two of us. I didn't feel good at all and Bryan was moving insanely slowly and non-coordinated. Today was going to be a long day ending with a 14 hour sleeper train and we were off to a fine start. Kicking myself. Once in a lifetime experience and hungover because couldn't face 80s prom new years eve sober. Ah well, food in - hardboiled eggs, flat bread, tang. Coffee. Packed up the bus, ... read more

Probably the most identifiably Egyptian location, the Pyramids have captured the minds of travellers for hundreds of years. And now we finally got our turn to see them for ourselves. We set out fairly early, still learning the names of our fellow group members in the bus on the way out there, and after negotiating the Cairo morning traffic we saw the distinctive points of the pyramids rising above the satellite dishes on the apartment block roofs. Of course it is winter here which is peak season, as the temperature is not regularly in the 40s like it is in summer, so that means lots of people at spots like this. We were expecting that though, so didn't mind sharing these ancient monuments which are the only surviving Ancient Wonder of the World. And once we ... read more

Although I would have liked to have seen much more, I only had a day in Egypt and so it was that I headed off to the Pyramids. I was bowled over. I knew they were big, but not that big! The sight was awe-inspiring ... and the Sphinx ... well ... impossible to take it all in. Having had my mind blown by the complex at Giza, the remainder of the day was spent having my mind blown by the treasures of Tut-ankh-amun in the Cairo Museum. Sadly, one day wasn't really long enough, but that's all I had and one must snatch the opportunity when it's presented.... read more

In September 2003, a friend told me that a travel company in Hanoi was going to organize a tour to Egypt. I had never expected that someday I would step my foot in Africa to see the pyramids and Sahara Desert, as it was unrealistic for me to travel so far away. After the SARS ended, Emirates Airlines offered a great airfare from Bangkok to Dubai then Cairo, and fortunately, the travel company had found enough tourists (from both Hanoi and Sai Gon) for our tour. I was the youngest member on the trip. After having traveled to 18 different countries, Egypt is still my favorite country. The trip in 2003 proved to be the most memorable trip of my life. We arrived in Dubai at midnight after a 6-hour flight from Bangkok. We stopped over ... read more
