Hello everybody. Been in a Perth nearly a week now and can't believe where the time has gone - if this is anything to go by, we will be flying home before we know it!! A beautiful city and very clean and spacious. There are not many people here either so nothing is crowded or overrun - makes a pleasant change. No intimidating groups of teenagers, no graffiti, no hassle - could easily live here! Our apartment is basic but nice and extremely well located. Walking distance to the city and buses, loads around here including some lovely parks for kiera. (www.brownelea.com.au) We have spent the day today lazing around the pool and getting a suntan and it is lovely. Latte and cake at the pattiserie across the road this morning (still miss Thorntons Julie!!) and ... read more

Sunday May 28th and we leave Coral Bay with Bruno, Irene, Liz and David, all from Coffs Harbour, waving farewell. Our next destination is Tom Price and we drive through magnificent country during the day. Scenery changed from semi arid to beautiful green and red dirt and hills and big rocky outcrops. Just what we were waiting to see in the Pilbara. Came across plenty of cattle today including a few rather large bulls. John’s diary says they would each feed an army! The wildflowers are starting to appear and with the blue sky and the red dirt and rocks it was a lovely drive. Had to stop overnight so had our first night free camping at Beasley River. Tom and Val from Singleton were already there and shortly after our arrival Wayne and Jill from ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Port Douglas June 11th 2006

So, Port Douglas has been treating us well, despite the less than perfect weather conditions. We spent our first day here getting to know the hotel itself and town and were happy to just relax and stay still for a few days. The next day, Thursday, we were picked up at 8:00 am by Tony's Tours in a white SUV for a day of fun in the rainforest. We were only 2 of 6 people in the car, plus Tony our guide, and it was a very interesting and informative day. Our first stop was at the Mossman Gorge, where we walked a bit through the rainforest to the Mossman River and saw a beautiful body of water, with lots of rocks and waterfalls. There were tons of bats too that caught our attention. Back in ... read more

Seeing the city in the distance out the Greyhound coach window was a strange feeling. I hadn't been in a proper city as such in a very very long time...the smell of coffee round every corner, men in their suits and shiny shoes and the women in their chic skirts and massive sunglasses... The hostel I stayed in even promoted the modern urban city feel...apart from the few cockroaches I saw... Most of the people staying at the hostel were on working holiday visas. It made me in one way feel happy that I saved before travelling as people were stressing out at finding work, but in another way it made me look forward to when I do eventually get my working visa and actually live and work in one place in Australia... My first full ... read more

Oceania » Australia » South Australia » Mannum June 11th 2006

Introduction This week the hikers were lucky enough to have a long weekend to explore a bit further than the Adelaide environs. It was Dan’s turn to pick which walk to do and he had been eyeing off this one in the Adelaide for kids book by James Muecke. It wasn't really a walk at all, but a visit to Mannum minerals, however we were able to couple it together with a few other walks and touristy things while we were visiting the Mannum area. Mannum is about 75 km away from home (as the crow flies) and on the River Murray. From Adelaide, you need to head east, crossing the Adelaide Hills, through Chain of Ponds, Gumeracha, Birdwood and Mount Pleasant. It is then a steep descent through the rocky slopes to the Gum-tree lined ... read more

Day 13: Picton We have had a rest day today - no travelling, and the only activity a long walk around the harbourside. Picton is the terminus for the inter-island ferry and a recreational boating centre, and not much else. At this time of year the boating is quiet, so the town is too. There’s an excellent small museum and dry dock housing the Edwin Fox, described as the 9th oldest ship in the world - surprising, considering it was built in 1853. The ship itself has been preserved rather than restored, and has left seaworthiness far behind, but is a fascinating relic that one is permitted to wander in and around relatively freely. The vessel had a varied history, as a trading vessel all over the world, convict ship, troop transport to the Crimea, frozen ... read more

Wed. June 7. Lost momentum yesterday with cold. Laundry and long sit in pub reading and dinner. Better today. Went to 'Save our Whales' demo at harbour. Twenty boats, 500 people, media. Out front before spruik. Sold two small flags to boat owners, one from Mooloolaba passing through going north. Older crowd. Stickers good. Drove to 1770. Lots of space here. Distant mountain, sweeping bay and a pub with no loo. Public ones in park opposite. Guy said that's 1770 which seemed to mean something. Keep you posted. Thur. 8 June. Warmer night, light rain. Spruiked at 1770 headland Joseph Banks Park. Two real estate guys got a large flag each!!! Drove to Rockhampton. Newspaper interview and pic. Story Saturday - editor willing. River with yachts. Fri. 9. Awoke Yeppoon heights. Spruiked very well. Girls from ... read more

Claire's Big Day out Fed up of having no work I decided to make the most of my free time and finally get over to Dunedin, just about the last place i had on my list for visiting in NZ. So in to Frank i jumped and four hours later there i was! Once again i felt like the small town bumpkin as Dunedin is HUGE compared to QT. So many shops and people and over run by students! Wandered around the town centre for a while, for once really appreciating the architechture with more than just a bored glance, was great to see something with a bit of time behind it after living in such a new town. Then met my friends Melinda and Ben who i met on turtle camp three years ago. Was ... read more

In a nut shell Scott writes: I think we have just popped out of a Purple Patch with our travelling as the last couple of weeks moving up the east coast have been so good that we have to pinch ourselves just to make sure we were actually there. In a nut shell we have ragged a 4wd Suzuki Sierra around the largest sand island for three days; went sailing on a picturesque tall ship around the Whitsunday Islands and snorkelled on it’s beautiful fringe coral reefs; completed our four day PADI Open Water Dive Course in a small town called 1770 and then finally lived aboard a dive boat in Townsville for four days, completed our PADI Advanced Open Water Dive Course, did eight dives on the Great Barrier Reef and two on the largest ... read more
