Hi again. Well, thats it more or less, 11 months of travelling and although can't wait to go home, we cannot believe where the time has gone! One minute in Queensland, the next ready to board the plane home. We are now in Canada, and a lot more relaxed we are too. Not something we can really put our fingers on, but things are definately quieter and cleaner and everything seems less of a drama somehow. We finished off our RV trip by driving the rest of the way across country to Chicago. The snow/rain/sleet eventually stopped and our last couple of days in the US were bright and sunny so things improved somewhat. We were going to go to Deadwood near Rapid City to see a "proper" cowboy town and also the graves of ... read more

Hello or Howdy as they say out here (well, on the films anyway). So, after leaving the bright lights of Las Vegas behind, it was off to Death Valley and all that it conjures up. As advertised, a spooky place, not much habitation, not many people or vehicles and certainly a feeling of being the only people on earth. The landscape went from mountains to sand dunes, desert to salt flats and back again; the contrasts in the scenery were incredible. In an area called Badwater, we were at the lowest point in the USA - 86 metres below sea level - and 76 miles to our west was Mount Whitney, the highest point on the mainland USA excluding Alaska. It was extremely hot about 36 degrees even though it is still only spring and ... read more

Another blog so soon - I am taking the opportunity while we have found a free internet in our motel!! Our last day in Flagstaff was spent on a day visit to the Grand Canyon. Had we realised how much accommodation there was, we probably would have stayed up there, but it was quite difficult to find anything we could afford on the Internet. As you drive up from Flagstaff, you are heading directly north, so in effect approaching the Grand Canyon from below. This makes for a very boring drive with nothing in particular to see, so when we hit the canyon, it was doubly dramatic. Just outside, we had stopped to see the IMAX film, which was really good, had some lunch and then continued up into Grand Canyon village. We were initially ... read more

Well Hello and for those of you who thought we had disappeared, 'tis not true, just couldn't find any cheap/free or any internet access etc yet again!! Anyway, we had a great 2 weeks in Fiji and are now in the great US of A, touring around a bit of California. We arrived in Fiji during a thunderstorm - not good for the nerves, especially as the wing of the plane got hit by lightening, but the pilot did a sterling job and managed to get us on the ground safely. I do hate it though when the reassuring tones of the captains voice at the beginning of the flight state that the weather is clear "all the way to sunny Fiji" and then the heavens open. So, we hit the rainy season with a vengence ... read more

In case you're wondering whether I have gone all "street", Awesome is New zealanders favorite word so thought I would start using it too!! So, did I go crazy and bungy, jetboat, skydive and launch myself around Queenstown??? Of course not! It was a bit like Darwin in that we weren't in our 20s, we didn't have enough energy or money and I don't think my system could have coped with the input of adrenalin. That said, I did make it up the Gondola, and very steep it was too (Mandy wouldn't have done it!!) so got some fantastic photos while Kiera and Rik went on a few runs on the luge. We watched everything being done though, so maybe that counts a little bit? As Queenstown was a bit fast paced for us, we went ... read more

Yes, where has the time gone? 2 weeks since I updated the blog and it seems like a lifetime. We have been moving pretty quickly and consequently I have not been able to find internet machines/time etc to do an update. Still, I shall apologise no more,.,....... We left you on the East Coast in Oamuru where we had spent a miserable 2 days sheltering from the rain and waiting in vain for Penguins ... things brightened up a bit and Sunday morning we set off for Dunedin, a sizeable city and one which I had been promised contained a Chocolate Factory!! En route we stopped at a place called the Moraeki Boulders, where in a nut shell, the balls were made from various substances millions of years ago, have been uncovered gradually by sea erosion ... read more

Back in the little camper again and on the road. It felt quite good actually and armed with some burned CDs from Natalies IPod we set off for Hanmer Springs, down the coast and in a bit. After leaving the Marlborough hills behind, we followed the coast down until we came to a place called Kaikoura. Just before we came into town, we passed a caution road sign with a picture of a seal on (someone with a GSOH had added a circus ball to it's nose!) and then saw about 90 campervans abandoned at the side of the road. Logic told me this was where the seals would be and funnily enough, there were thousands of them all over the rocks. We also stopped for a looksee although I do have to say Riks parking ... read more

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL*** I hope you had a good one and enjoyed yourselves. I thought I had better do an update as we head out of here tommorrow to explore the South Island for the next 5 weeks. We have had a very relaxing time over the last 3 weeks, helped enormously by the vast quantities of Sauvignon Blanc they make in this region and the fact that Gail and Mike have a Spa in their back garden. Kiera has had a fabulous time with her Aunt and Uncle and especially annoying her cousin Natalie who has been a star! We have been out and about lots in the Marlborough Sounds region which is the north of the South Island and it is a beautiful area. Blenheim itself is bordered on 3 sides ... read more

MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE SLACK BLOGGERS! Wherever you are and whomever you are with, we hope you have a fabulous time and we will be raising a glass to you all. Of course, we will get to celebrate a full 13 hours before you!! Once again, I apologise for not keeping up to date quickly but we have been on the move a lot so that we could see everything in North Island that we wanted to see before we set off for Riks brothers on South Island. We are now settled in Blenheim for the Christmas/New Year Period and are enjoying proper beds, family life and taking a break from the road. Anyway, I left you whilst we were travelling around the Surf Highway, route 45/3 which we carried along until we got to Wanganui. ... read more

Hello again and I won't say Merry Christmas just yet. The decorations are all up here now and it seems really strange to even think that it is Christmas when it is sunny and hot. Mind you, not so much today (Monday) as once again we are holed up in a camp site while we have a dismal weather day. Still, can't all be glorious sunshine as we would soon get bored (?). I have to say though that the New Zealanders certainly give the British a run for their money moaning about the weather - must be that similar climate...... Well, back to Lake Taupo. We drove to Taupo from Napier through what was again beautiful scenery, crossing the Maungaharuru Ranges and stopping briefly at the lovely Waipunga Falls. It was then downhill all the ... read more
