Apologies for delay in blog. Lack of access to internet and too much fun has delayed things. Wednesday 17th May Have just realised that Hugh and Katie have birthdays this weekend coming …and Nigel’s is looming too! Ah well. Anyway, back to the blog. 8th - 16th May Alice Springs…centre of Australia… an amazing spot with the most fantastic hosts in the famous Farkies. I know the many who came before us will sigh in memory of barbies and hikes in Simpson’s Gap, Stanley chasm, Wiggley’s Hole, the desert park, the reptile centre (where Rachel worked and Hugh was persuaded to wrap an olive python round his body even after being advised that heat makes them tighten their grip. Those who know Hugh well are aware of his heat control problem so this was a true ... read more

Update from Zoe We had a 2 day stop over in Los Angeles, which was hectic. The first night we crashed out in the hotel called Ritz Milner. It was ok, tiniest room ever, but the location was excellent one block from the metro. They don't advertise public transport much in LA, if you ask anyone about how to get somewhere they say taxi, but the metro does exist and is cheap and easy to use. The second day we went to Universal studios - absolutely brilliant. A really good time to go as well, cos the park was pretty quiet, the most we waited for any of the rides was 20 mins. Jurassic park ride and the studio tour were the best by far. In the evening we went to the Dodger stadium to watch ... read more

Oceania » Australia » New South Wales » Blue Mountains June 10th 2006

Day 19 (June 9) I went to the Blue Mountains today. It's supposed to be the "grand canyon of australia." It was rainy in the city when I left but the sun was coming through at times. I took the two-hour train from Central Station at 10am. It was cool to see the suburbs of Sydney from the train, and I took in a lot from the conversations of the local commuters. I arrived around noon and had a nice lunch. The canyon is only a mile or so from the train station, and you walk through a nice little town called Katoomba. I knew when I got there I was in trouble. It was still rainy and very foggy. I had read about the Mtns being covered in fog, and I had been hoping it ... read more

I'm afraid, I've left it too long to write up these days in my diary, so I'm gonna have to keep it to bullet points and leave the photos to tell the story, since my memory is already loosing the details.... Got picked up by Lionel, my tour guide for the next 3 days camping in Kakadu National Park. Lionel turned out to be the most amazing guide, he's half aboriginal and has lived in kakadu for 4 years, so knew everything there was to know about the whole place. We had a great time eating kangaroo stir fry, swimming under waterfalls, catching frillied neck lizards, grabbing handfuls of catfish whilst in the waterholes, checking out 50,000year old artwork and getting stoned and playing the digeredoo - believe me, if there's one instrument that really takes ... read more

Well after being in New Zealand for 2 months in the freezing cold it was a huge relief to get to the Fiji Islands. It was in fact their winter there but you would never have thought it whilst lying in the sun on one of the 300 islands paradise beaches! Our first stop was Nadi (which is actually pronounced Nandi) and to the nadi bay hotel. We'd checked into there for a few days to get sorted before heading off to the islands. Nadi town was not the best place to be so most people head to islands as quickly as possible. It was a really run-down city, with locals hanging around all over the streets. As we walked down the street everyone was looking at us, we kept our heads down trying not to ... read more

Taking my cue from a map in the hostel depicting interesting sights in the area, I made a beeline for Mount Frankland, a modest peak (~400m) about 30km north of Walpole that apparently offered a commanding view of the countryside. It didn't seem as though anyone had done the hiking trail that circled its base for many moons, judging by the amount of vegetation that had grown over the path. Not for the first time, I was to regret not bringing my machete from home. The view from the top consisted of trees in all directions. I then paid a visit to Circular Pool, into which some gentle rapids flowed, but it was otherwise roundly unremarkable. There was a big thrill of anticipation, a massive frisson in fact, as I approached the Giant Tingle tree. Many ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » South Island » Christchurch June 10th 2006

It felt like it took forever, but we finally made it. I am in beautiful Christchurch, New Zealand. I am so exhausted and rightfully so. We (we being myself, my family, and the around 40 other friends that make up our tour group) left yesterday, Thursday. We lost a day on our flight over and so now it is Saturday. The longest day of my life started at 6:30 am with all of us finishing our packing and cleaning. It seems that I am a poor packer. My suitcase weighed in at 57 lbs and cost me about $20 in fines. The entire group met up at the Sarasota airport for a quick flight to Atlanta, followed by a longer, more uncomfortable flight to Los Angeles. After a 7 hour layover in LAX and a ... read more

Towards the end of my stay in Australia, I was thinking I would need to do an adventure of some kind in that country before my departure from it. So where should I go? Indeed, just months before June 2006, I started to explore some options, such as going to Karijini National Park in Western Australia. However, I soon realised that I was facing a number of constraints that would prevent me from going that far. I had to find a trip that would be i) within my budget and ii) easily accessible by public transport (as I don't drive). So some time around May I had read something about the Indian-Pacific Railway, which travels across Australia. Promptly I started wondering whether I should try this one. So I began some research, and not much ... read more

It's been a long time now since I last wrote, I know. What can I say, I'm pretty lazy when it comes to these posting deals. But enough excuses, onto the trip at hand: about two months ago I took my mid-semester break to travel around Queensland for two weeks. Also, my parents had planned to come and meet me there for a week, so naturally I was doubly excited to go. Week I: Rain, rain, rain, parents, rain, rain, rain. The first week of my trip was a 5-night stay at a quaint resort in Cairns. More specifically, we stayed at Palm Cove, a small town a 40 minute drive north of Cairns. As the title would imply, it rained quite a bit for this part of the trip. A LOT. On the bright side, ... read more
