Day 5: Lake Tekapo Lake Tekapo is a tiny village right on the lake shore and with only a handful of shops. We drove over six hours, so were very happy to come across a great pizza place - Pepe’s, recommended through Lonely Planet. An open fire added to the cosy atmosphere. On waking up we marvelled at the fantastic view of the lake, with a beautiful blue colour and fog lying across the lake in feathery tendrils. There were only three or four other people in the whole place, which consists of caravan, camping, cabins, backpacker and motel accommodation - all just above the lake shore. We were glad the proprietor upgraded us to a motel unit although his only motive was to save us from the cold! We certainly noticed the freezing air, and ... read more

So Ronit and I arrived in Adelaide on Monday night...it was a little interesting, since we weren't quite sure where to meet Emma. It turns out she was just outside the luggage pick up. Since we've been here it's been fantastic. The first day Emma, Ronit, and I actually ventured out of Adelaide to her parent's vacation home in Goolwa...about an hour and a half away on the Murray River (which goes from the Norther Territory all the way down to South Australia). On the way, we stopped at a few wine vineyards in McClaren Vale. The wines here are fabulous and tastings are free at the Cellar Doors. I ended up with several bottles to take home. After the day of wine tasting, we had a very relaxing evening in Goolwa. The vacation home is ... read more

I heard muttered in a thick Australian Accent immediately upon walking up the stairs of the dirtiest and cheapest hostel in Kings Cross, Sydney. I had been in a constant state of motion for the past 36 hours, from Van Vieng Laos to Sydney Australia via several buses and two planes, and was anxious to lie down in a real bed. But when my friendly host introduced me to Slavco, my Yugoslav roomate, I knew that sleep was out of the question. There was clearly an illness plaguing this man. I try to make a diagnosis but am torn between severe vampirism and rabies. I lie awake on the top bunk, staring at the ceiling, and listening to the heavy breathing of my blood thirsty roomate from below. I think tomorrow I will purchase a turtle ... read more

Hello everyone, As marc said a quick entry back into your virtual world of marc and claire. At the moment for me this consists of not working very much, my new boss is.......well actually i cannot put the words on here to describe her, she's shook me out of my very comfortable nest of money earning thats for sure. After two months of having it easy working away i'm now back on the hunt for a job, as is the entire backpacker population of southern new zealand it seems. The spare time was a novalty at first though and doing all those thing you do when you have too much free time.....walking up big hills and baking seem to be the previlant activities! And having cheeseboard picnics in the park with old friends from Paihia. More ... read more

I can't believe it's already June 1st!! Time is going by much too quickly. I have lots to catch y'all up on, so, here's the last of the South Island blogs. From Te Anau we went to Milford Sound, about a two hour drive. We didn't have any plans, only to figure it out when we got there. So that's what we did. Went into the i-site, got information and recommendations on cruises, booked a cruise, and got on a boat about 30 minutes later. It wasn't perfect weather, but it wasn't raining, either. Apparently it rains most of the year on the West Coast - 7 meters of rain, if you can believe it (that's roughly 21 feet - a whole heck of a lot of rain). We did a smaller cruise that makes a ... read more

Oceania » Cook Islands » Rarotonga June 1st 2006

Welcome to one of the happy isles of Oceania, "Kia Orana" (hello & long happy life)... This is the third time we have been priviliged to visit Rarotonga set in the Southern Cooks, South Pacific. It's a long ways from anywhere thats for sure, 10.5hrs to LA another 10 to UK, but thats what makes it so special and relatively quiet and untouristy and unglam and thats why we like it so. Not kidding about the sea dogs either, the local mutts are all similar in that they are so friendly and they have this incredible addiction to swimming and catching fish - TRUE! We witnessed one day kayaking amongst the motus (islands) two young dogs, dog paddle a distance of half a mile from one island to the next just to meet up with the ... read more

We picked up the van yesterday and after a long drive out of christchurch we ended up at lake tepako, it was dark when we arrived, but this morning in the sunshine, it is just out of this world! We had a walk along the lake and the water is sooo crystal clear, and still and quiet, the lake is surrounded by a ring of snow capped mountains whcih reach all teh way up to the sky -simply out of this world. It is about 10 degrees, and there was even a frost on the grass this morning. We went up Mount john which is just next door where there is an observatory and it was really cool up there, you coudl see laods of the lake which is an aqua blue colour, hope it comes ... read more
