Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Auckland June 8th 2006

Hello everyone. It has been a few days so I thought I would update you on all to my activities. I realize that, once again, there are no pictures. I have just tried uploading them onto this internet cafe computer and it doesn't want to know. It keeps asking about installing software and I haven't brought that along as mistakenly I thought it would be easy to extract them. Of course this is not the case. This may mean that I have to purchase a proper digital camera if I want to show you all where I've been and what I've got up to. More expence! For the time being I'll try and paint pictures with words. Alternatively Google images of Auckland. These will be like my photos except more professional looking and without my thumb ... read more

So we are now in the land of Kiwi's. We arrived at Christchurch as it was pouring with rain-where has the sun gone??!!! Thank goodness we had a very nice couple called Sue and Ron who took us in. ( Beths boyfs parents friends as i tried to explain to customs ). Customs was interesting as the sniffer dogs liked the olives we brought over and so had to declare them as well as processed cheese and walking boots-are they not supposed to be looking for drugs??? Sue and Ron were lovely. They cooked us roast dinners and lots of tasty puddings. They MADE us try the local wines and they gave us our own room. Was so weird sleeping on my own again!!! The first thing we did was go out and buy thermals-very sexy!! ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Rainbow Beach June 8th 2006

We got into Rainbow beach and we hit a wall of rain.. this is about the first time i have seen rain since i left home, kinda weird. We ended up booking a 3 day self drive 4X4 trip to fraser island at the hostel we were staying at. They put you into groups of around 11 people and give you a car and camping gear and off you go... kinda crazy! Our group was really really cool a few english girls some canadians and some italians. the other group we went with that were in the other car aside from 4 of them were not so cool :SThe island was beautiful... loads of dingos and amazing fress water lakes. You couldnt swim in the ocean because it was shark breading ground.. they showed us this ... read more

8th june We were travelling up the coast by Greyhound bus- a hop on hop off type thing. Spent the day travelling to Agnes Water which was close to a place called Seventeen Seventy we wanted to visit. Arrived that eve with no hostel they were all booked up!! Managed to get a motel for the 4 of us which turned out to be better value anyway. 9th june We did the Scoooter Roo Tour! A tour around the area on scooters!!! Was great fun- about 30 of us on scooters!!! A girl fell off and badly grazed her face- silly girl had never been on one before and didnt accept the offer of how to drive it!!!! Drove to a pub to collect wedges where we sat by the beach and watched the sunset which ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » Walpole June 8th 2006

Escaping from Pemberton as quickly as I could, I made my way to the Gloucester Tree, another famous fire tree that's climbable by the public, and another famous fire tree that was to remain unclimbed by me. There was a short walking trail through the woods nearby, at the beginning of which were umpteen brightly coloured parakeets (?) pecking around on the forest floor, chuntering to themselves like guinea-pigs and behaving to all intents and purposes as if I wasn't there. The size of the karri trees is impressive, and you find yourself walking around with your head back, like on a first visit to downtown Manhattan. Karri is apparently a popular wood in the building industry because of its length and lack of knots. I'd picked up a leaflet describing the Karri Explorer scenic drive, ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Cairns June 8th 2006

I guess it was naive of me to think that coming to australia meant warm nice whether. I mean all I have ever seen of australia is bronzed people, hot and dry outback, and amazing sunny beaches. Well Sydney was cold and rainy. Apparently its winter here. The southern hemisphere is all skrewed up, toilets flushing the wrong way round and all. So as soon as my medical trip was over with in Sydney I decided to catch a plane north to Cairns where I had heard it was hot. So I flew the Australia equivalent of Southwest Airlines except that Jetstar (name of airline) made even more attempts to cut cost. This plane was stripped to the bone. We boarded via the tarmack, up some stairs and through the back of the plane. There were ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Northern Territory » Darwin June 8th 2006

Well, I've crossed the state line into the Northern Territory, a land equivalent in size to France, Italy and Spain combined, but with a total population of around 200,000. A land that shunned the offer to be a true 'state' in favour of being self-governed....well, it's probably something to do with the fact that it gets more cash from the government this way. See - I am learning some stuff! Anyway, I've settled in Darwin, (or should I say Dulwin) : a small town, prematurely pushed into being a city, and it shows. Hot, lazy and utterly devoid of life and vibrancy, so much so that I'm glad I'll have only wasted 3 days here by the time I return from kakadu National Park on Sunday. Talking of Kakadu, I was supposed to go yesterday but ... read more

After Canberra, we headed south to Melbourne, where, amongst other things............. - we drove down the Great Ocean Road as far as the Twelve Apostles. THe road name is a bit of a scam though, as only the first section to Apollo BAy involves an "ocean-side" drive - the rest is inland! But we stayed 2 nights with Anita (who we met on our Central America #2 trip) either side of the drive - sharing photos and stories by her nice log fire!! And along the way, we met a cute, wild koala, who saw fit to sit in the middle of the road & halt the traffic! - we spent 4 nights staying in ST Kilda from where we got the tram into town each day. We visited some museums, shops and went on a guided ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Tasmania » Freycinet June 8th 2006

Despite its name and being so far south, Tasmania is not the exotic place many believe it to be. The mainland Aussies actually regard it the way many Americans regard West Virginia. Basically the towns and cities (very small cities) look like the towns and cities in Ireland. The pastures with sheep look like Ireland too. The mountains, trees, lakes, etc are bigger though, more like the landscape of central PA or the Rockies in the US. Unlike the landscape of PA, the Rockie, and Ireland, there are incredible beaches in Tasmania that made me wish it were summer time so I could swim in the sea. The most beautiful beach was Wineglass Bay in Freycinet National Park. I will go back someday to swim at this beach. The water was crystal clear and blue, definitely ... read more

Brisbane was completely different then i thought it would be. Its a big city... but nothing really appealed to me. We were only there for a day and a half so i couldnt really give it a fair chance but nothing stuck out to me. They had a lagoon there like many of the major citys not on beaches along the east coast. We went to markets and just walked around it was kinda nice. We were staying in what would have been a nice hostel if we werent in a room with 8 people that were actually living in the hostel. the room was an absolute mess, multi share, so boys tend to be messy too... it just wasnt the nicest of rooms ever. and i was sick and trying to get to sleep and ... read more
