Had a few drinks of course but had to get an early night after Thursday's skydive, up at 5.30am to go on the Torra, er Torranger, er something crossing, basically up the side of what's known as Mount Doom in Lord of The Rings (I've not seen it yet) Sadly weather was poor (it is winter here) so could not do the proper walk so 5 of us went up to some nice waterfall then a bit futher to a remote lake up the mountains, was a proper workout which was worst for the 3 that chose to wear trainers (tsk) I of course was properly equiped with hiking shoes, walking trousers, multilayers, waterproofs and an abundance of mars bars, Sir Edmund Hilary, nothing. got somewhat wet etc but it was worth it, esp as mount ... read more

Oceania » New Zealand » North Island » Taupo June 11th 2006

***DISCLAIMER - I've been drinking with the locals in Taupo since 5PM (it's now 11:30PM), so forgive any typos, inappropriate statements, etc. The bartender kept giving us jager-bombs...pretty much to encourage this unbelievably brash American lady to continue to take her top off (which she did). So, I sit here typing on my hostel computer in Taupo at the second hostel I've ever stayed at (last night was the first)...I really didn't plan to go the hostel route, although I think my fellow Magic Bus travellers would think I was a complete snob if I didn't do it. Actually, it's been really cool...granted, most of the other hostellers are at least 8 years younger than me. Last night, in Rotorua, we got back to the hostel after dinner to find about 75 drunk twenty-somethings crammed in ... read more

Yesterday I had one of the most amazing experiences of my life so far. Swimming with Whale Sharks - the world's largest fish. They are of course totally harmless (otheriwse I wouldn't have done it!) - unlike all other sharks they aren't meat eaters they feed on Plankton and Krill - like whales. How it works is that a spotter plane is flying above the ocean and will radio in the position of a whale shark and which way it is heading. Your boat then moves into a position to intercept the whale shark, dumps you in the water to wait for it to pass you and then you swim on with it for a few minutes before the boat picks you up and that process starts all over again. The first couple of times we ... read more

Thirteen years ago, Lorenza and I booked a trip to Tasmania, a few weeks later we put a deposit on a block of land in the mountains northwest of Sydney. We toured Tasmania on our motorcycles and spent some time visiting our long time friend Mandy. At that time (1993), Mandy and Steve had just started going out together. Soon after our return from that trip we built our house. So, thirteen years later, Lorenza and I decided we had better get and see these people again. It had been too long and we had promised so many times to come and visit again. So, in thirteen years what’s changed? More wrinkles? Yes! Some grey hair? Yes! Were the four of us able to make each other laugh? Yes! Had we changed much? Not really! Well, ... read more

Having an aussie pass (Greyhound Bus Pass) means that I can book bus trips when I want and to where I want within a restricted time period. Beyond that, the bus pass is good to get me from Cairns up in Northeast Oz down to Sydney. So from Cairns my first stop was Airlie Beach where I had a sailing trip to the Whitsunday Islands booked. The bus ride from Cairns was about 12 hours, so to save money I booked the overnight bus leaving Cairns at 9pm and arriving in the morning. This is always the best because you save on accomodation for a night. Anyhow, I arrived at Beaches Hostel and was so thrilled to be there becuase the first hostel I stayed at in Cairns was a dump. Beaches felt like a 5 ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Western Australia » New Norcia June 11th 2006

I did my longest haul of this road trip today, from Albany on the south coast all the way up to New Norcia, about 130km north-east of Perth. I noticed that many of the land divisions here are called shires and I even passed a sign welcoming me to the shire of York, which made me feel strangely at home. I was an unwilling, and unhappy, accomplice in the death of at least one bird today. The one confirmed killing happened in less than a second - a green object shot in from the right and bounced off the windscreen. I backtracked and found a parrot that was well beyond the stage of being as sick as. Ten minutes later, another bird thudded into the windscreen, but I couldn't find a body so hopefully that one ... read more

It's a holiday weekend in Australia to celebrate the Queen's birthday (should we not get a holiday in the UK for this reason??) so we took off on our first Australian 'road trip'. We drove from Canberra out towards the edge of the Snowy Mountains (which are not yet snowy), through Cooma and then down towards the far south coast of NSW. We stayed a night at a nice little motel in Eden, and then drove all the way up the coast to Jervis Bay where we stopped for a few days. We went whale watching (and saw some humpback whales and dolphins), went walking in Boogeree National park (beautiful sea views, crashing waves, pouring with rain), and visited some really beautiful beaches (although it was not exactly beach weather!). We also had dinner in a ... read more

Oceania » Australia » Queensland » Whitsundays June 11th 2006

Hi all! Just got back from the Whitsundays, an amazing group of islands off Australia's east coast. We boarded the Apollo, which is a Maxi boat, and it's the only place in the world you can actually sail on racing yachts. This time the group was loads better and we had a great time, even though the weather wasn't great. Yes it does get cloudy here, and we've heard the U.K. is having glorious weather! The boat was great, we got to snorkel a few times, and though the coral wasn't quite as colourful as Fiji, there was loads of variety, and our underwater camera actually worked this time! We also visited Whitehaven Beach, which was stunning even though it was cloudy. It is apparently the 2nd best (or 2nd whitest?) beach in the world. Like ... read more

This morning I headed towards Alice Springs, the long way. If I had a four wheel drive I could have taken the 100km Giles road and been in Alice Springs by lunch time. Unfortunately I had to take a 240km detour to stay on sealed and passable roads so I ended up getting to Alice Springs at about 3pm. Just enough time to have a walk round. I'm so far not that impressed. Not exactly the oasis I'd been expecting. The River Todd runs through Alice Springs in the same as the Avon runs through Tewkesbury, apart from one difference. There hasn't been any water in this river for several years. Severn Trent take notice, if they can manage with a dry river and not have any water restrictions I’m sure any UK water shortage is ... read more

After returning from sunrise I had some breakfast and heading off to Kings Canyon. It took just over three hours to get there and after my early morning I was feeling tired. This place is operated by the same resort company so yet again some very high prices. It was quiet though so I did get my own room with TV. The TV turned out to be very valuable as after dark there was nothing to do. Before dark however I drove to the Canyon and did a small walk through its base. After the previous two days walking my legs weren't up to anything more strenuous. I got back by sun set and spent the evening watching films on the only TV channel I could pick up and drinking wine. The next morning I had ... read more
