About us

We are a family who use our Sundays to discover, explore and enjoy the serenity of the world around us while getting some exercise.

We live in Semaphore, a beach-side suburb of Adelaide, South Australia. Although Adelaide and it's suburbs are quite flat, there is a range of hills that run North-South that provide for many interesting walks.

Here are some quotes that say some of what it means to us to go out bush walking.

In every walk with nature one receives far more than he seeks.

- John Muir

Climb the mountains and get their good tidings.
Nature's peace will flow into you as sunshine flows into trees.
The winds will blow their freshness into you,
and the storms their energy,
while cares will drop off like falling leaves.

- John Muir

Today Dan and did a local adventure. We took our bikes for a ride and revisited Port Adelaide. This has been the site for a new development - NewPort - which has seen the construction of muti-story accommodation and marinas. It is interesting to compare this trip to our last blogged url=http://www.travelblog.org/Oceania/Australia/South-Australia/Adelaide/Port-Adelaide/blog-14594.htmlPort Adelaide visit in July 2005. We called this the 3 bridge tour - the Jervois, the Birkenhead and the brand new Tom (Diver) Dereck bridges. There is a 4th - a railway only bridge - the Blessed Mary MacKillop bridge. First we visitied the mangroves at the southern end at newport. There is a small walkway that allows you to see the roots of these trees. We then checked out the NewPort apartments which were nothing more than earthworks 4 years ago. Although there ... read more

We made a 2 3/4 hour walk at Anstey Hill this weekend (see map for detail). It was nice as it was a cool day to walk some of those steep sections. Plenty of birds - particulary rosellas. Some frogs croaking as well. You can see some of our other Anstey walks here .... read more

Today we visited Warren. It was a lovely Autumnal day with clear skies and light winds. I really like this walk as there are no 'too steep' sections, lots of different terrain and it is really well marked. You can find out more about Warren at our earlier blogs , , and . ... read more

Introduction We were up early so we committed to a big walk today - Onkaparinga. This is a long and tough walk, and as it turned out it was the toughest and scariest walk we have had for some time. What happened We started off well on the Sundews track, making our way down into the gorge. Instead of turning left, we turned right and rock hopped down the creek for about an hour. We had some seen some interesting sites - herons fishing, a canoe tree and bull rushes. As we rock-hopped, we looked around for the path that would take us up to the lookout at the top of a hill - but it became clear that we had missed it. As we were eating our sandwiches we looked up to the hill we ... read more

Introduction Not far from Adelaide, just behind Flinders University, is a very special area - the Sturt river. We went there for our Sunday walk and enjoyed a different experience - taking in sea views, a dam, a creek, gorge and waterfall. Quite magnificient. As there are some steep climbs and creek crossings - we would not recommend if walkers are under 8 or have limited bush experience. How to get there... From the city take South Road to Sturt Road. Drive past Flinders and then take a right hand turn a few km further down Eden Avenue. Work your way to Mountbatten road and park in the turning circle at the end of the road. Enter at Gate 1. There is some info online about Sturt Creek - See here What happened ... We ... read more

Introduction Today we headed to the Barossa for a Heysen trail walk near Tanunda. How to get there ... From Adelaide travel north to Gawler, and once in Gawler turn right up the Barossa way. Follow this road through Sandy Creek, Lyndoch and on to Tanunda. Maggie Beer's farm shop is 4 km North of Tanunda (see Pheasant farm route map). The walk is south of Tanunda on Rifle Range Road (See 'From Maggies to walk start' map). The third map is of the 11 km walk (Our walk) along the Heysen trail entering into Kaiser Stuhl Conservation Park. What happened ... We started off at Maggie Beer's farm shop at Tanunda. It was part of my birthday celebrations that instead of going out for a restaurant meal on the day, and that we would go ... read more

Introduction The hikers are normally silent over summer as SA is way too hot to walk - so this year we headed off down South - to Tasmania. Peter decided to drive - which meant we had an opportunity to catch up with Tom and Kate in Mount Gambier and also visited their family at Beachport. If you want to read more about our Tasmania holiday then you should have a look at this web site My Tassie journey. Mt Gambier walk I got up early in the morning and walked from the Presidential Hotel towards Mount Gambier. I went past quite a few tree processing factories and through a sinkhole that had been converted into a cricket ground, before making my way up onto the ridge of the volcano. On the highest point of this ... read more

Introduction This blog is about our two recent visits to Black Hill. The first walk was a guided tour on the Southern side of the hill. Dan is part of the CSIRO Double Helix science club. This club is very well organised and has a stack of events to choose from and this was one of them. It was a "Herpetology field trip" to check out the Cunningham skinks - a long living lizard (30 years!) that is distributed through the Mt Lofty ranges. The trip was led by Peter Matejcic who showed us the tricks of lizard spotting. For example - one was the use of a mirror. By reflecting sun light you could shine strong light into deep crevices to see where the lizards were hiding. Another was to look at temperature - ... read more

Introduction This was a shortish walk in the Adelaide Hills called Jupiter Creek. The loop trail takes in a piece of the Heysen trail. The walk is 5 minutes away from Hahndorf - a German 'touristy' town where you can see all manner of quirky germanic things. How to get there From the city, head up Glen Osmond road to the freeway. Continue on the freeway until the exit leading to Hahndorf. From the main street of Harndorf look out for the large brown signs leading to Jupiter Creek Mine. There are several turns and about 5 kms before you arrive at the car park for the walk. What happened.. We were rained on. It doesn't happened very often in South Australia, but it happened today. A sporadic shower dumped on us big time. We had ... read more

A few pictures from last Sunday's Walk for the cure which was organised by the Juvenille Diabetes Research Foundation. A huge thanks to all the blog readers who donated - our team raised over $600 before the walk, which will go towards research into curing Diabetes type 1 (a disease that Dan has had since he was two). It was a lovely day - 22 degrees and bright and sunny. After doing our warm up exercises we set off for the walk - which was so pleasant and colourful along the seaside. The map of the walk is available online. If you would like to donate and you missed out earlier, the web sites stay open during October: Dan's donation web site Diana's donation web site... read more
