The cruise is to celebrate Mark and my 70th birthdays. We were born in the same hospital in Oakland 14 days apart. We choose this cruise because it started the day before Mark’s bday out of Fort Lauderdale. Brad, Christie , Laura and Christopher joined us on the cruise. Our ship is the Equinox, we have cruised on it before. We like Celebrity Cruise line because their food is so good. The employees all seem happy and helpful. We also like the solarium pool which is indoors and is for adults only. The cruise includes tips, wifi and unlimited drinks. We all upgraded the drink package so we could have top shelf drinks. Each cruise day has lots of activities but we mostly drink, read and lay around the pool. We also enjoy the shows at ... read more

Before we arrived in the Caymans we applied and received a Certificate to Travel from the Cayman government. We had to show the certificate before boarding the plane. We used Southwest points to fly for free. The flight from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman was under two hours. We rented a car and drove ten minutes to our Airbnb located on the south end of Seven Mile Beach. We love this spot, it is steps away from the ocean. There is a small ship wreck a short swim from our beach. We swam out and snorkeled multiple times because it was so close. We brought our own fins, mask and snorkel so we could snorkel whenever we wanted. One of the first things we did upon arriving was google the internet to find out what days ... read more

The day that the H3O golf outing is taking place – and evidently in good weather, yeah!! Meanwhile, in this part of the world the McClung family and we enjoyed breakfast on the veranda of the B&B: pancakes, cereals, or the Pinto Gallo (leftover rice and black beans) with scrambled eggs and either bacon or sausage. We were picked up for the zip line adventure by the “Original zipline” company van. I wore my long thin pants and a bum bag with small camera & binoculars, tissues, etc., but probably shouldn’t have taken anything but the small camera, as there was never time for any looking around. David reluctantly left his big camera home – and that was absolutely the right thing. First we had to hike up, and up, and up, and it was quite ... read more

After Granada, I had decided to visit the Corn Islands in the Caribbean coast of Nicaragua. The Corn Islands are about 70KM away from mainland Nicaragua and consist of two islands - Big Corn (10 Sq KM area) and Little Corn (2 Sq KM area). My plan was to stay in Little Corn only as it's more rustic and basic. The journey from mainland Nicaragua to Corn Island can be done via a long bus and very long ferry or by a flight from Managua. Given the time involved, I decided to take the flight from Managua to Big Corn and then the ferry to Little Corn. Corn Islands are well known for diving, snorkeling and the Caribbean vibe. These islands used to be under British control, so English is easily spoken and understood. Little Corn, ... read more

I crossed over from Costa Rica to Nicaragua over the land border. Except the fact that Nicaragua needs PCR test, it's an easy border crossing. My first stop was San Juan Del Sur, the famous beach on the Pacific Coast in Nicaragua. Just crossing into Nicaragua, I could see the change in the vegetation and feel the increased temperature. The soil was dry, the rainforests had given way to dry forests and the heat was intense. I stayed near the main beach on San Juan Del Sur but visited Playa Maderas where most surfers hang out. However, my trip was dampened by me getting a heat stroke and being sick for 3-4 days. It was time to just rest and recuperate. I left from SJDS for Ometepe Island after recovering. The trip included a chicken bus ... read more

After Ometepe, I traveled to Granada, an old Colonia city known for its cobbled streets and colorful buildings. Granada came into being in the early 1500s as an economic and cultural hub (built by the Spanish and considered a sister city of Antigua in Guatemala). It was almost burnt to the ground later on but later revived itself to become the place it is today. I spent time exploring the Colonia history and the buildings around, ate almost every day at a place run by deaf people and made friends with people in the hostel. I also visited Laguna De Apoyo, a volcanic lake which was extremely peaceful and calm. But the most interesting experience was visiting Masaya Volcano National Park. It's one of the rare places on earth where you can see lava flowing in ... read more

It was a short trip of 5 days during the holidays of April 2019. Eventhough it was short,I am more than satisfied to explore this beautiful hispanic carribean country. I arrived in Puerto Plata by plane and stayed in Sosua for a couple of nights. Then, with a help from a local friend,we drove the countryside from sosua going to the capital,Sto. domingo for half day.It is a roadtrip that you will enjoy because of its scenic routes. We passed town after town, stop for photo-ops on each town name lettering landmark (like most passer-by do),dug in a cheap snacks on each stop overs and feast our ears on spanish musics while on the road. I reached Sto domingo the same day we left Sosua.I booked my hotel inside the colonial zone where i can explore and walk around the ... read more

The time has come the Walrus said…. Not only to speak of many things, but to wrap up a spectacular and fascinating vacation. Again, we were too exhausted last night to write up the blog. We had left La Fortuna and our little casita with no bathroom doors but lovely pool and friendly evening toads, when Gerardo picked us up once again. We drove on decent roads up up up – almost to the Poas Crater. There was one small landslide to avoid on the road – it covered our side completely – it’s unusual to have more than one lane in each direction. We stopped at the La Paz waterfall. It is now a fancy hotel and spa and you have to pay money for the extensive tour and viewing platforms, but Emily knew the ... read more

What a relaxing day today! Except for the fact that a neighborhood dog woke us up frequently and we were unable to sleep after 5:30, this was an extremely comfortable bed with very soft sheets. and we woke up refreshed, just not long enough. Oh well. David was happy to do some birding in the am, and said buenos dias a few times to a man who was bicycling. The man eventually stopped and chatted – I could hear from a distance and was so very proud of David! I heard the word toucan and as they walked slightly further down the road I assumed the man knew where to show David a toucan. No, he was inviting David to see his garden (growing pineapples, cacao, and guanabana – that’s soursop) and even the inside of ... read more

Sadly our amazing visit to Costa Rica is coming to an end – just 1 more day till we leave ☹ This morning we had a guided walk thru the Bogarin Trail, a birding (and sloth) habitat virtually 2 blocks from the center of La Fortuna that was highly recommended to us by someone we met at Magee Marsh when birding for warblers a few weeks ago. Our guide Kenneth knew his stuff about birds. He did point out a sloth to the 2 other folks in our group, but he was a birder at heart. We ended up picking up some marvelous new birds – 8 all day: a MARVELOUS boat-billed heron (5 were sitting up in a bush near a pond) and an American pygmy kingfisher. It started raining on us (a little earlier ... read more
