You know you have lost the plot when career becomes your identity... well, thats where this story begins... I have given up the suits/ties (ok ok, I never wore them :), free now from the slavery to blackberry, stepped away from the endless negotiation that an i-banker must go through... in a nutshell, am going on a sabbatical... this is a new phase of life...

We returned from Cherrapunji to Shillong and then to Guwahati, the next day Isabell had a flight to Delhi and I had to get myself the permit for Arunachal Pradesh. Getting a permit to travel within your own country is difficult to digest and I dont understand why the government has kept up with this archaic system. One gets permit easily, but you waste a day (apply today, get tomorrow). Also, the problem is that they give you permit for one identified route (as per their system) at a given time, so you can e.g. do down the Tawang route, but then come back to Guwahati, get the next permit for the next route and go again. So while I had ambitious plans for Arunachal, with this bureaucratic hassle, I decided to do the Tawang-Dirang route. ... read more

The next stop on the trip was Meghalaya, the land of clouds. The plan was to come from Kaziranga to Guwahati and go to Shillong, but got advise from locals to take a detour through a bus-stop before Guwahati, which we did. Saved a few hours, not that it matters when one travels without goals . You will not see any pictures of Shillong in this blog, I was shocked how crowded the city is. Narrow lanes bustling with cars and all sorts of vehicles, seemed like Mumbai (except Shillong had even lesser space). The city is now well known for its educational institutions and kids from all over India seem to throng here for good quality schooling. The central market was choc-a-bloc, with hardly place to put ones feet. All in all, it wasnt what ... read more

The journey from Pelling to Tezpur was adventurous to say the least... Got to Bagdogra through 3 sumos, Bagdogra to Guwahati on a flight, straight off to the Guwahati bus stand (which is outside the city), a 5 hour ride to Tezpur and finally late night a rickshaw ride from Tezpur bus stand to the hotel... had forgotten how rickshaw rides are :) The reason for doing Tezpur was to see the mighty Brahmaputra. We have all read tales about it, so had to see it for myself. But I had forgotten that this was late March, Tezpur was hot and the river had shrunk quite a bit. But the banks bore proof of how wide it goes during the rains and the impact it has on people's lives there. Tezpur has little else (couple of ... read more

Well, am doing the last few entries of my India trip almost a year after the trip... Had given up during the trip due to lack of Internet in North East... and all high aspirations of coming back to Mumbai and completing it went to dust, thanks to sheer laziness... but now, after almost a year, someone inspired me to complete the tale... Its not nice to leave a story in the middle... so here's the year back trip's remaining portions... How I remember details? Well, pictures are always the easiest way to recall... here goes, hope at least a few of you would enjoy reading :) ======================================================================== Leaving chilly Darjeeling, we reached the mountain kingdom state of Sikkim, pleasantly surprised that the weather was much warmer, despite Gangtok being at almost the same altitude as ... read more

Am updating the blog after a long gap, thanks to limited net access and a hectic travel schedule (especially in the North East). Kolkata was a stop-over from Port Blair (night spent at Port Blair was horrible, hotels there very unprofessional, will confirm you a room and at last minute say that they are over-booked and push a higher price room in another hotel to you, so be careful when traveling to PB). Did the usual touristy stuff in Kolkata, Victoria Memorial is live reminder of yesteryear glory of Kolkata (after all the city was the capital of the East India Company's rule of India till 1901 after all), but is also proof of what happens if you rest on your laurels instead of continuing to work hard. Went to Birla Planetarium for a show, visited ... read more

From Varkala, Isabell and I decided to travel together to Andamans, we made an overnight stay in Chennai en route, we went to one of my Cognizant-time hangout joints for dinner, was good memories coming back after so many years. All those friends have dispersed, been so long since I saw them. We arrived in Port Blair on 28th Feb from Chennai and immediately took the ferry to Havelock Islands, which is the most popular place here (read 8-10 thousand tourists a year). The ferry ride was a 2.5 hour fun ride, full of beautiful sights of the sun and perfectly blue waters. (Getting the ferry ticket is sometimes tricky if you don't plan in advance) Upon arriving at the resort, went straight to the beach at the resort and was treated to the most stunning ... read more

Writing after some gap, was away from internet, happily lost in the Andamans :) Away from the backwaters of Alleppey, Kovalam is a touristy beach resort, with everyone trying to sell you something the moment you get here. However, the sea remains the dominant force here, beautiful torquiose green and powerful waves crashing into the shores. We stayed at a resort which had access to a private beach and spent the first evening there on the secluded beach, followed by some fresh seafood and wine. It was amazing listening to the sea from the balcony of my room, I can see why my friends want to buy beachfront houses :) Next day was spent walking around the common beach (but not before more yummy seafood). But decided to move onto Varkala (about 60km from Trivandrum), which ... read more

Described as the Venice of the East, Alleppey (now called Alaphuza, but no local calls it that :) is a beautiful place of backwaters, coconut trees, paddy fields and complete silence if one chooses so. The resort, I was staying in, was a very interesting collection of wooden rooms, bamboo rooms, tree houses and normal rooms. I experimented with the tree house there first, but found it too cramped up and moved to the bamboo room. Really nice place to stay, completely different experience than normal life I arrived in Alleppey, unsure of whether I would be doing a houseboat trip (didnt make sense doing it alone). But the place I was staying at had lot of tourists (think I was the only Indian there) and I met Isabelle and Wolfgang, two travellers from Germany, who ... read more

I left the pary scene of Goa on the night of 15th Feb, taking an overnight train to Kozhikode (all the locals still call it Calicut). Wayanad district, is about 3 hours road trip from Calicut and I took a KSRTC bus to get there. Well, the cost logic made complete sense (it costs 5% that of a taxi cost :) It was one helluva bone-crunching, nerve-wrecking ride, especially in the nine hairpin bends thats there in the ghats between Calicut and Wayanad. We all have screamed at rash bus drivers when in our cars, well if you sit inside a bus, its even more crazy :) but those guys usually know what they are doing and music sure helped in enjoying the scenery rather than focusing on the few inches separating the edge of the ... read more

Apologies for some spelling/grammatical mistakes on the Tarkarli posting, was writing it while being completely pooped, so didn’t proof-read. Talking of spelling/grammatical mistakes, here are some cool ones I came across in Goa 1. Sign on a leather bag shop - "Great Genuine Fake Leather" - the shop was full all the time, guess customers like honesty :) 2. Sign on a doctors clinic (below it was listed all the mental disorders he could cure) - "Psycho the rapist" - no wonder his clinic was completely empty :) I reached Goa on 9th morning and immediately it felt like home. Goa always has felt like home, this time was no different. I was gonna stay near Baga Beach based on a friend’s suggestion and found the cottage to be a pretty relaxed place 2 minutes from ... read more
