Yes, it sure rained last night, judging from the huge and deep puddles, and was still doing so this am. So we got to poke around the room in the early hours – including doing some much-needed laundry (there are laundry rooms on every other floor of the building). The locals made it sound like today would be dreadful, but it cleared off and, while the winds were still up and coming from the “wrong” direction, it has been a lovely day. We checked out our Tres Trapi place (where we saw Hungry Boy turtle) and the waves were crashing over the rocks! We then stood and watched the kite surfers and wind surfers enjoying the winds at Hadicuri. Then we visited the Holiday Inn, where Tom and Amy had stayed about 30 years ago when ... read more

We seemed to have avoided the rains all day. Will we be so lucky tomorrow? At 8:30 or so we found the water at Tres Trapi to be excellent, AT LAST! and within 50’ of the entrance was HUNGRY TURTLE! He was chowing down on the delicate/tender turtle grass, and was not phased by us at all. We went off looking for more, and when we returned he was still there! So, we fulfilled our promise to show Tom and Amy turtles (well, one). AND we found a flying gurnard as we were coming back in – pale in the deeper water, and it didn’t stick around long enough to take a photo – so here is one from previous times just to remind some of you what it looks like. Also a cow fish, a ... read more

8:30 am and we are off and at’em, with a quick trip to the Huchada Bakery to get a frappochino each to go. But it turned into NOT such a quick trip. Yes, it’s always been busy – with maybe 4 people in front of us, but this was PACKED. Was David telling people about them too? Anyway, frapps in hand, we drove to Baby Beach, but not on Big Mama’s side, but on the n.e. side, near the padi dive shop. We had been recommended to try it for turtles. There were lovely sea oat trees for shade, and a sandy entrance. We did not see any turtles though, although conditions were lovely and calm and warm and not very deep. Then a huge black cloud finally drew near so 3 of us got out ... read more

After eating our own breakfasts in our rooms, we headed out for the Arikok National Park. Of course, on the way we saw the crazy airplane parked in someone’s backyard – in the center of the island. Supposed to eventually be a restaurant? It’s about 50’ off the ground, accessible by an open staircase. We managed to avoid scraping the bottom of the car on all those crazy draining ditches across the road. The blues and turquoises were magnificent against the beige of the sand and the white of the surf. We hiked down to the Boca Prins waters. Actually there was significantly less surf still on this wild side of the island. We went into the further cave first – the “clean cave,” so called because there are 2 types of bats living in the ... read more

We were all up and at ‘em to go snorkeling early again – would the sea lice be the issue again? NO, it was the abrupt change in wind direction and speed. There are white caps on the ocean at Eagle Beach and all up the usually leeward side of the island! So, it was off to Linda’s for Dutch Pancakes rather earlier than we’d planned. Mary Jane was there and liked her little gift of maple syrup. And the pancakes were delicious – we split the brie, walnut, and honey, Tom had the same, and Amy a gluten-free banana and honey. With the nice wind we thought it would be a good time of day to visit the Alta Vista chapel, built originally in the mid 1500s. We were inside the cozy contemplative chapel with ... read more

It’s Sunday the 18th, but yesterday was a travel day – long and tiring but happily all according to plan. As many of you know, this is the time for friends from church, Tom & Amy Fadeley, to finally come with us! They had won the bid for this event at the fundraiser for our church almost 3 years ago. We are here at last. We left home at 3:15 am for the American Airlines flight at 6:13. Tom and Amy had arrived even earlier for their flight to Newark. We went to Miami, where we had a very very long walk and barely time to stop in the bathroom and buy one very expensive Caesar Salad to add to our brought-from-home Peanut butter/banana muffins. We arrived perhaps 30 mins before Tom & Amy so David ... read more

The other tour that Renata and I decided to go on was a Sugar, Rum and Tobacco Tour. Our first stop was a sugar cane museum. At the museum, we saw a collection of locomotives used in sugar production and learned how sugarcane is grown and processed. We even tried Guarapo, a sweet drink made from sugar cane We then enjoyed learning about and tasting the local rum while getting drunk in the process and we tried our first Cuban cigar (Definitely not for me). I can see why sugar, rum and tobacco play an important role in Cuban culture and enjoyed learning and trying their local products. So that marked the end of our Cuba trip. Definitely relaxing and a great getaway from everyday life. The cars, the people, the drinks; Cuba was a fun ... read more

Central America Caribbean » Cuba » Oeste » La Habana September 8th 2022

To experience the cultural aspect of Cuba, Renata and I decided to also take day trips. On our first day trip, we went to Havana, the capital of Cuba. On our tour of Havana, we visited: 1. A fort in Cuba (I don’t remember the name) 2. The Grand Theatre of Cuba 3. The National Capital of Cuba, 4. "El Floridita," a historic fish restaurant and cocktail bar. The establishment is famous for its daiquiris and for being one of the favourite hangouts of Ernest Hemingway in Havana, 5. Plaza De La Catedral, and La Catedral de la Virgen María de la Concepción Inmaculada de La Habana We also saw some fancy vintage cars and Cuban taxis. We ended the night with a visit to the Cabaret Tropicana where we were impressed with performances incorporating traditional ... read more

Canadians love to go to Cuba for vacation. So, we decided it was time Renata and I finally visited Cuba. For the first time in Cuba, we stayed at an all-inclusive resort. We heard good things about the Melia Resort chain from our friend Andrea, who was travelling with us. We decided to spend a week at the all-inclusive resort Melia Los Americas in Varadero, Cuba The Resort The first couple of days were pool days, where we explored the resort, relaxed, and enjoyed Pina Coladas and other alcoholic drinks by the pool. The beach was stunning. The creepy critters were about and the local cats provided great entertainment. It provided a great mental escape from the everyday work life in Canada. The resort had a display of vintage motorcycles and cars one day and a ... read more

Note: Our original blog from Belize (below), which had formatting problems and in which we couldn't download photos, has now been updated and republished below (Previous Entry). The 90 minute trip from Ambergris Caye back to the mainland in the water-taxi occurred under threatening skies but fortunately the thunderstorms held off. We had arranged a rental car for the remainder of our trip, but somehow retrieving our luggage from the ferry and signing up for the car lost us another 90 minutes. So we decided to take in a good lunch and then make our way directly to San Ignacio (a 90 minute trip) instead of stopping off at the Belize Zoo midway as originally planned. ... read more
