South America » Peru » Cusco » Inca Trail September 28th 2004

I just got back from the 4day Inca Trail to Machu Pichu and it was absolutely amazing! We walked for about 6hrs a day, camped each night and ended up at the old Inca ruins of Machu Pichu. It was hard work with a lot of uphill and big steps, and the weather was pretty cloudy and foggy for the first three days and it even rained a bit one day, but when we got there on the fourth day the weather was perfect so we were all so stoked! My group of 14 was made up of a lot of Americans, an Irish couple, a South African woman, a Pom and me, and we had a lot of fun! And our guides and Chef were great too, we ate so well the whole time and ... read more

Greetings to one and all. I won´t write much but I will post some more piccies. Iguassu from the Argy side was incredible again. We started with a 4x4 drive through the jungle then went on the jet boat. I enjoyed that sooo much - riding the rapids the wrong way at speed was fun. And then the boat pulled up right under the spray from the falls and we got a tad wet. We also went for a boat tour of the wetlands at the top of the falls and saw a caimen. From Iguassu we spent a couple of days driving to Bonito where today we went snorkelling in a crystal clear river teaming with fish. Ness was in her element (I wasn´t really surprised when she grew flippers). Enjoy the photos. Viv & ... read more

Shoot I'm buggered. and yes I did get eaten by a lot of things. At the moment my feet are swollen up even fatter then normal because I got so ravaged by mozzies and sandflies and ants and caterpillas. But the rest of the time I had an absolute blast. It was hard work but well worth it. The first 4days we spent hiking with our backpacks fully laden with food and mosquito-nets and stuff, then we got to rest on days 5 and 6 after we made our raft out of balsa trees. I saw a gang of spider monkeys swinging through the trees above us, an aligator, turtles, heaps of cool birds and butterflies, piranas and other wierd fish with lots of teeth, fresh water sting-rays, fireflies and yes of course, a gizillion mosquitos ... read more

South America » Brazil September 17th 2004

Greetings from Argentina! We{ve been on the road for just over a week now and we{re having so much fun. First stop was Rio - fantastic city. We stayed in the Flamengo district pretty central. Did all the usual bits over 3 days - big Jesus, cable car up Sugarloaf mountain to watch the sunset, sunbathed on the Copocabana and visited the botanical gardens. We joined up with our tour group for the next 7 weeks on Saturday and headed for Paraty - a small old slave town just south of Sao Paulo. Got some camping practise in and went on a boat trip round to some deserted tropical beaches (I won't mention the torrential rain in the afternoon). We left Paraty on Monday and spent the next 3 days driving across Brazil to reach the ... read more

South America » Chile » Easter Island September 12th 2004

Well, it´s been short but very sweet. We´re leaving Easter Island this evening and we´ve had a fab time here. The island is amazing, although the weather´s been a bit rubbish. We´ve climbed a volcano (and stood inside the crater - wow!), been to the beach, seen more Moai (big heads) than we can count and taken hundreds of photos... We´ve stayed in a really nice guest house, eaten good food, and made new friends in Rachel and Steve, who are 3 months into their round the world trip and who stayed in the same guest house. We hired a jeep with them and toured the island on Friday, it was a great day. I´ll put photos here when I manage to get them off my camera, it´ll be at least a week till I can ... read more

Last night I came up to Rurrenabaque from La Paz on a 15hr overnight bus and the first 5hrs(in daylight) where on "the worst road in the world", and yes it was bad. Rurrenabaque is a really cool town though, it's more of the Bolivia that I was expecting to see and it's actually hot here which is cool. I came here to go into the jungle for a while, so this morning I did a bit of asking around and found a guy who "knows the jungle" - so I talked him into taking me out there for 6days of treking and rafting solong as I pay for all the food and a little bit extra for his time. So thats where I'll be for the next little while - I hope I don´t get ... read more

South America » Chile » Santiago Region » Santiago September 7th 2004

Hello! This was our last day in Santiago, we´d had a ball. After a marathon 24 hour, 3 flight journey, we finally arrived in Santiago, very tired and more than a little smelly. We had been very organised and arranged an airport transfer to take us to our hotel, but when we got into the arrivals hall it was nowhere to be seen. There followed a very scary taxi journey to the hotel, where our taxi driver tried to find us an article in the local paper as he drove along the motorway. Quote of the day according to Graeme: Jo: Here, I´ll look for it if you want... Taxi driver: No, no, I good driver lady, don´t you worry. Eeek!! We got there in one (two?) pieces however and all was well. Our hotel turned ... read more

Shoot what a hardout day!!! I can't even describe how tough the conditions are here, basically it made me realize that I've never even come close to working hard in my life and that these guys are hardnox!!! Thousands and thousands of people have died in this mine over the 70 odd years it's been open through health problems from the acidic air and apsestos down there or by accidents, and now the average life expectancy of a miner is 15yrs, so when some of them are starting at 12/13yrs of age it's not looking good for the population of Potosi. It's a really cool city though, it's just a shame that so many peoples lives are caught up full time in this mine so they can't really enjoy what they have around them.... read more
