14th November The morning was spent planning our onwards journey where we decided to make tracks towards La Paz and Lake Titicaca. We´d spoken to a coupke of friends in our group, Chanj and Jen, who were also looking at heading that way so we decided to travel together. We caught a cab to the bus train and I put,my best haggling Spanish to work and we got a bus leaving that eve at 10pm to Puno near Lake Titicaca arriving at 4.30am the next morning. We ate ata restaurant with Chanj and Jen, filling our bellies then boarded the night bus to Puno complete with foot rests and reclining seats, and you´ll be pleased to know we slept all the way there. 15th November We arrived pretty much on time and headed straight to a ... read more

November 1-3, 2009 - Puno & Lake Titicaca, Peru After a decent night´s sleep, we are all thrown into Taxi Chollos (small three wheeled, peddle powered taxis) which take us to the port of Puno where we will board a boat to take us out on to this massive lake and head for Taquile Island, about three hours away. The scenery is amazing here so there are plenty of photos to see (when I get a chance to upload them) and being on a boat is far better and much more relaxing than our previous days on buses travelling over bumpy roads. At 3,900 metres above sea level, Lake Titicaca is the world´s largest navigable lake and over the many centuries since it was formed, has changed from a saltwater lake, to a fresh water one ... read more

Today was spent on the lake. We left at 8 and walked down to the private pier by the hotel. And I do mean down, it was loads of stairs! Fifteen minute boat ride took us to the Uros Islands, aka the Floating Islands. They are inhabited by the Uros Indians. In pre-Incan times, they were forced off the land and started living on reed house boats in the southern part of the lake. In the late 1930s/early 1940s there was a drought that forced them back on to the shore. After the drought ended, they came up with the idea of building floating lakes out of the reeds of the lake. Walking on one of them is like walking on a waterbed. Mauricio (our guide) says there are about 40 islands, and before the boat ... read more

Anyone who has ever traveled with an infamous "buddy pass" before knows all about the uncertainty tied with this type of traveling, which often times leads to frustration... The sweet sight of a smiling gate agent who hands you a boarding pass at the last minute is one of life's greatest relief! Though I certainly can't complain, having had the opportunity to travel the world with such perks, my "buddy pass experience" in Lima has not been so fortunate. To give you some boring, yet unfortunately important background, Delta only has one flight out of Lima to the States (Atlanta) per day. Moreover, as luck would have it, July is the busiest month to travel in and out of Peru, which means that flights are packed every day. To make matters worse, South American flights have ... read more

Hola all! So after our exhausting Inca Trail experience we planned to play it cool for about a week to reboot and relax. Although in the end that meant lots of night bus journeys (possibly the worse way to catch up on sleep) and a growing awareness of time slipping away. Before we took the night bus to puno the day after finishing the inca trail we planned a relaxing day of blogging, laundrying and catching up with some friends made on the trail. The day quickly developed into a maelstrom of organisational chaos - the computers were slow and continuously deleted our attempted photo uploads and finding out bus times and booking them turned out to be much more complicated than planned, meaning we might even miss picking up our laundry. We were given different ... read more

16th February The minibus arrived at 06.45 am to take us to the docks where we would board a boat for the day trip on Lake Titicaca. The boat this time was impressivley comfortable with coach seats and an upper viewing deck. But again the boat was pretty slow however we had a tour guide to keep us occupied. The first stop after 1 1/2 hours sailing was the Uros floating islands. The boat docked and we were allowed to walk around these ingenious creations. The islands are built up with layers upon layers of thick reeds which grow on the shore of the lake, the whole island is floating and ancored to the bottom with long stakes. The Uros people live their whole lives from the islands fishing, hunting ducks, replenishing the reeds on the ... read more

We took a ferry tour of Lake Titicaca and visited Taquile Island for a delicious Titicaca Trout lunch and then visited the famous Uros Floating Islands. Whole communities live on massive floating islands made out of 2m thick layer of reeds. The reeds need to be replaced every few months, usually new reeds are laid on top and the rotting ones pushed to the bottom. The reeds used for a variety of handicrafts and also a food source to the people of Lake Titicaca. Some reed islands are so big that they hold whole communities including medical centres, shops and schools. The islands need to be anchored because during storms currents can take them across the border of Peru and Bolivia which runs through the centre of this massive lake. It was amazing to see people ... read more

Hi everyone! Its been a little while since we´ve written anything, so this entry is going to cover most of our 4 weeks in Peru. We´ll try to keep it relatively brief, hitting the highlights from each spot, but there is a lot to talk about. We also attached a lot of pictures to this entry that range from the farm up until we arrived in Cuzco. After leaving Mancora, the Northern Beach hotspot in Peru, we headed towards Lima, stopping for a few days a piece in the major Northern towns of Chiclayo, Cajamarca and Trujillo. Chiclayo is a city very near to the coast that is surrounded by several archealogical sites including the tomb of Sipan the (the second richest tomb ever discovered, second to King Tut.) which was very impressive-floor after floor of ... read more

Back to Quito now and a final meal and drink with the guy’s and gal’s from the trip to the Galapagos Islands and my first ever Mojito, not bad. Three of us are travelling together to the Inca trail and Machupicchu, Gary and Vickey. They both live in Sittingbourne, just along the road from me, so we have a lot in common to talk about. We, the three Amigo’s, got up early to catch a 7.15 flight only to find it had been cancelled. They put us on the next flight at 18.15. Our theory is that they only had enough passengers for one flight, so they cancelled the first one. Back to our hotel and the receptionist asked hat had happened an he gave us our rooms back and let us have breakfast, result. The ... read more
