"Puno is a city in south eastern Peru, located on the shore of Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, at 3,860 m (12,421 ft) above sea level. It is also the capital and largest city of the Puno Region and the Puno Province. Puno's importance to the vast Inca empire was reflected in a legendary connection. Inca tradition has it that Manco Capac, the first Inca, rose from the waters of Lake Titicaca, under the orders of the Sun God, to start the Inca Empire, which would be centered in the neighboring region and city of Cuzco", as stated in destinations 360.com Today some think it is a drab place. I liked it. There is a set of steps going up the side of a red stoned mountain that leads to a huge sculpture ... read more

I finally left Cuzco and headed to Puno a small drab town on Lake Titicaca. One of the options you have while in Puno is to visit the floating islands and stay the night with a family on another one of the islands. The experience was amaing there was no power and all the food was cooked by a small wood oven.. We went to a little party the island people put on for us and had to dress up in the traditional panchos.. After the island I crossed the border into Bolivia and sent a few days in Copacabana which was a cool little hippy town on Lake Titicaca. The computer I am using is real slow so I will add more photos to this section as soon as I can.. Hope you like them.. ... read more

After completing the Inca Trail and having walked 40km at altitudes of over 3500m you would have thought it would be fair to assume that we would have a couple of days to recover. But no such luck. This tour was pretty relentless and after a night back in Cuzco, we flew straight off to Puerto Maldonado in the Amazon the next morning. And I was actually really looking forward to being back at sea level again and therefore being able to breathe normally. But what I´d forgotten was the fact that this was the Amazon, which meant extremely hot and humid weather. I´m not sure which is worse, altitude or humidity. But after the 2 days in the Amazon, going back to altitude didn´t seem like a bad idea. The flight was just the start ... read more

Week three of the tour took as to The reed islands, an overnight stay on Amantani Island and a visit to Taquile island.A bit about each....The Reed islands are islands literaly made of reeds. The homes are made of reed, the boats are made of reed and even their sun shades are made of reed, the reeds are also a source of food. Everything they make from reed however only lasts three months so as they finish making their homes and boats etc from reed they start making them again as it takes three months to complete their creations!!!!!!!! The people who live there are amazing ..they still hold all there traditions which havnt been influenced by western society at all. Some of the island even refuse to have tourists visit however most rely on the ... read more

In the morning, we were given bowls of hot water to wash our faces heated by the wood-fired stove. We were very pleased to be given pancakes and mint tea for breakfast. We said goodbye to Melissa, who was getting ready for school, and headed down to the harbour with her mother, (who was dressed in traditional costume and was spinning a bobbin). On our way we gained fantastic views of the island and sparkling waters and observed donkeys and sheep being herded into the fields. There was a ranking order on the island, with one family as the dominant leaders, who formed the main decisions about which family each person acquired. We said goodbye to our mother and thanked her for allowing us to experience this different way of life on the island, and for ... read more

After the carnage that was Cusco we made our way down to Puno in order to chill for a few days and visit the Lake! What with funds running a little low we decided to save a few pennies by taking the local bus rather than the tourist bus....About 7 hours into our 8 hour journey we're thinking "good choice this isn't bad at all" and then BANG BANG!!!! Oh Noooo our bus is driving directlty through the middle of a Police / Local riot in Arequipa!!!!! There was a railway line with poilce on one side and locals on the other....No lies, guns were being fired!!!! Sinking slowly into our seats we observed and prayed as police arrived by the coach load!!!! Possibly the longest 7 minutes of our lives but the driver just ... read more

After our exertions on the Inca Trail we had a few days of R & R in Cusco, while some of our GAP group went into the Amazon Jungle. We decided to spend one of the day’s white water rafting on the Urubamba River. We took a two hour bus journey south west of Cusco with a bunch of Israelis (who got great satisfaction from quoting the latest Borak film) to our base camp. Here we were given a 30minute demo on dry land about all the commands that we would be given and the actions we would have to respond with. This was probably the second scariest part of the day as the instructor told us about all the ways we could screw up and we realised an appreciation for our left and right ... read more

we arrived in Puno expecting something a little smaller but it was more like a mini shanghai....crazy busy, bustling streets and rickshaws everywhere!! Cool place though but not a lot to do apart from eat, drink and go on island tours....so that is what we did!! We stayed in a hotel...nice...own room, tv and shower....codl water that is...not so luxury after all!! We went on the island tour, setting off through the green algae surrounding th eport in puno...nice!! First stop was Isla Uros (Floating Island) - pretty amazing stuff where they keep adding reeds on the island to keep it 2m thick and floating on 12 m of water...pretty amazing stuff!! What was also amazing was the size of the women on the island....big would be an understatement...maybe chewing on the reeds is quite ... read more
