We arrived in the small beach town of Mancora at 4am with no place to stay. Fortunately we found a taxi at that time of the morning and he took us to one of the cheapest hostels in the town. After a couple of hours of sleep and being eaten alive by mosquitoes, we wanted to shower, found that there was no water and realized why the place was so inexpensive. We immediately decided to find a new place to stay and on our way out we ran into two other girls from the US traveling north through Peru. We decided to get a dorm room for the five of us because it was cheaper and once our accommodations were settled we immediately hit the beach. It was a beautiful day on the beach and we ... read more

Trujillo, Peru's third largest city, is beautiful Spanish Colonial city with buildings painted in bright and bold colors amist numerous churches and street performers. The central part is easily walkable and dotted with many cafe's and shops. I stayed in a great hostel called the Colonial Hostel right in the center and booked excursions for the next few days. The first day of sightseeing included the Moche ruin temples. Many of the ruins are still intact because the rebuilt the temple on top of the old one (by filling it in with adobe and stones) so they are still in the process of digging out the many levels (and treasures!). The Moche civilization are older than the Inca and also performed human sacrifices for the gods (all the sacrificed bodies were found to be boys). Next ... read more

August 16 - 22, 2008 OK, where were we? Oh yeah, Puerto Eten and Reque. We made it back home to Pimentel and prepared for our next leg of the trip to Mancora (MAHN coh rah). This is how we got there: From Pimentel, we arranged to have a taxi pick us up at zero dark thirty (OK, it was 7:00am) and take us to the LINEA bus terminal in Chiclayo. We had purchased our tickets in advance which is almost ALWAYS the best way to go about traveling by bus. We were not willing to risk the trip to Chiclayo in a combi which can be erratic and will not deliver you door to door like a taxi. We have gotten rather adept at travel by combi which is cheap and normally reliable, but we ... read more

Well I finally made it... tonight is my last night here in South America. I will be leaving tomorrow Mancora tomorrow around 2pm, and leaving South Americ around 3:30am. I am a little sad tonight. I should probably catch everyone up on the happenings, as I realize it has been quite awhile since my last blog. 7/29 7:00am I wake up early in Tarapoto, hoping to catch a bus in the direction of Ecuador. Bought a ticket for an 18 hour bus departing to Piura at 1:30 for 70 soles with Sol Peruana. On my way back to my hotel, I met a fellow tourist from Europe from my Tuktuk at the stoplight. He was in a different mototaxi, and shouted over. We decided to meet for lunch at noon at the plaza de armas. Turns ... read more

Máncora, our first stop in Peru. We arrived in Máncora at 3 in the morning on Sunday the 15th of June and stayed for 2 weeks. That's the longest we've stayed in one place since starting this trip!! Máncora is a really laid back place and apparently they have sunshine all year round, it hardly ever rains! We spent most days relaxing on the beach, working on those tans and coming up with different poses for our pictures. As you can tell there wasn't much else for us to do in Máncora. One day we did go and check out the hot springs which was a bit of a disappointment but an experience nevertheless.... ... read more

Mancora, Peru. Beach. The first beach I´d seen since Australia really.....first beach that had all the neccessary factors for a proper beach experience. I´d forgotton how much I love the beach & was sorry that I didn´t get there earlier. Trekking is so over-rated!! Mancora is a small town where you´ll hear the blow of the passing buses at regular intervals as they steam through on the main Panamerican highway. The sun was shining with not too many tourists littering the beach & with handfuls of people jumping, flipping & spinning as they kite-surfed their way out to sea. It was a nice introduction to the beach lifestyle again....with my hostel just across the road from the beach so that getting dressed was simply throwing on a bikini. Lining the streets are loads of restaurants....some of ... read more

Well we had a right good few days out there on the Inca Trail - super perfick it was - top weather, great guides (we never grew tired of our guide calling us his 'super mountain hikers') and a top banana group made for an uber good trek. Each day was pretty hard going what with being up high and with the heat and all that but the trail was excellent and the scenery was amazing pretty much all of the time. We were really well looked after on the trail too. Each day our super porters woke us up with a warm coca tea and then laid on a right good spread of a breakfast - then we would set off on the trail leaving said porters to pack up camp (tents - dining shelter ... read more

Sun 4th May We´re in Peru, but we´re not really officially here. We haven´t had our passports stamped. We left Ecuador and have now disappeared. We met our new guide who hadn´t realised we hadn´t had our passports stamped and it was only about 40 minutes into the bus journey to Mancora that he noticed. Hopefully we´ll go back in a day or two or we´ll have trouble trying to get in to Bolivia!! Our first experience of Peru was heat, dust and brown earth. So different here to the lush greens of Ecuador. We´re in a coastal town called Mancora where apparently it hardly ever rains. The first introduction to Peruvian transport was interesting. How many people can you fit in a 12 seater van? Apparently 19 plus all their backpacks. It was not pleasant ... read more

Hello one and all, how's life treating you? We have had a low key week so here is a low key blog. Fortunately there are some pretty sunset pictures to liven it all up. We've mainly split our time between scratching mozzie bites, enduring white knuckle bus rides, and bus ride recovery sessions (aka lying around in the sunshine, which made the bus rides worthwhile). After leaving the jungle, we made our way to Trujillo, a town about halfway up the coast of Peru, via flight and (reasonably comfortable) overnight bus (although they confiscated our beer on the door - imagine!). Trujillo was one of the first cities to be founded by the Spanish in the Americas and retains many colonial buildings. The main square is one of the prettiest we've seen, and it is a ... read more
