Man I´m a sucker for the beach. I guess when you´ve lived thousands of kilometers from the nearest ocean your whole life you have to soak it up while you can. Mancora has been good times. It´s a little town on the coast in the north of Peru, not far from the Ecuadorian border. I was lucky to find a room right on the beach, or just to find a room period. The place was pretty full and there aren´t many single rooms available. Harldy anyone travels in South America is traveling alone and I can see why. It´s quite a bit more expensive for accomodation when you can´t split a room with someone. I think the most common form of work is selling chiclets on the beach. People from 8-80 are out there making ... read more

Took an overnight bus from Lima, a seriously comfortable bus with two movies shown and then totally darkness....actually slept most of the way. Arrived in Mancora (famous beach resort in Northern Peru) at 8.30am.... hordes of guys trying to convince you to go to different hostels and hostels.... anyway agreed with one fella and he called his friend the taxi driver over to bring us there...... by the way the taxi is a Tut-tut! Fine, no worries, rucksacks strapped in and off we go. Except that the paved road does not last long and over 20 mins later of pure pain bouncing up and down we arrive at the "hotel" - we took a quick look around but our first impression had been "run away as fast as you can!", lovely taxi driver smiled knowingly and ... read more

Emma writes I've always fancied being on a beach for new year. Ecuador's best beaches would mean travelling north again and we just don't have time to back track ( I think we might be saying that a lot on this trip). Next stop therefore had to be Mancora beach in north Peru. After making that decision we were told by everyone that it was the place of the biggest party in Peru for new year. Sounds busy. We had no accomodation booked, like everywhere else we've been, so no real worries there, something will work out. Getting off the bus there's a hundred mototaxi (a three wheeler motorbike rickshaw type afair) waiting to take us to the place of their choice. Everywhere has tripled their prices for new year, so we looked round a few. ... read more

Matt Writes- A quick 1 hour bus ride after we bidded our farewells to Gavin and Alma (who chased the bus grinning her waves at us) we were back in Loja bus station. We waited for our bus in a chicken joint with images of Ecuador and poultry adorning the walls, one in which a woman (face heavy in make up) was holding a chicken leg the size of a turkey far too provoctiavely for my liking. Aboard the overnighter to Piura a leg stiffening 8 hours away was the first clear night in ages. The moon was brilliant against the ominous blackness of the mountains around us, street lights twinkled below as if we were looking from a plane. As we were in Quito, and then on Cotopaxi, it felt like the top of the ... read more

We have been on the go now for almost two months and after quite a lot of adventure and rushing around, we decided we had earned a rest. With this in mind, we decided that a beach break was needed and booked our journey from Huacachina to Mancora, a beach town in the north of Peru. After a 5 hour bus ride to Lima and then a 17 hour bus ride on to Mancora we arrived to be greeted with a wonderful blue sky, mild breeze and beach, beach, beach and beach....! We were met at the bus terminal, as usual, by touts trying to persuade us that the hostel that they were spruiking was the one for us. We agreed with one of them and set off in the back of his moto-taxi (effectively a ... read more

The shaman experience was pretty crazy.... Firstly to do the process properly, we had to go to the centre at 8am in the morning for the purging session. You drink this little cup of spicy liquid (whilst also being blessed with tabacco smoke, apparently helps) and then they provide 5 litres of water that you have to drink until you feel full each time. So 6 of us (4 american´s) sat round in a circle with buckets in front of us waiting for the liquid to take effect! The next 2 hrs consisted of people throwing up huge amounts into the buckets. Wasn´t violent sickness, a strange smoothness about it! Was hilarious and everyone was laughing apart from when being sick! Although one American did looked pretty awful! Felt really clean afterwards and then went back ... read more

Next stop Puru. Crossing the border from Ecuador to Peru was an interesting experience, battling our way on foot over the bridge which marks the border at Huaquillas, through hoardes of people trying very hard to get us to change money or buy parrots! Once safely at the police station on the Peruvain side we were met by our guide to start our journey south through the Peruvian desert located between the Pacific Oceon and the Andes. The rain seldom falls here and we travelled for hours without seeing any signs of life, just occasional images marked in rock on the hillsides and sometimes graves by the side of the road, presumably to mark the spot where the desert had got the better of someone. We spent a fantastic few days relaxing in the beach resort ... read more
