A opinião dos peruanos ... read more

Hello Again! We had our friend James visit us from Seattle and he was interested in doing some hiking. After checking out different options we decided to head back to the Cordillera Blanca near Huaraz where we took my parents in December of 2007. After hanging out in Miraflores for a day, we took a bus to Huaraz and stayed at a relaxing bed & breakfast, The Lazy Dog Inn. After hanging out there for a day and a half and eating Diamox to help with the altitude, we headed out for a 3 day/2 night trek through the Quebrada Quilcayhuanca and Quebrada Cayesh. This trek was all set up for us by Diana who is the the owner of the The Lazy Dog Inn. As part of our trekking team, we had James, Melanie, myself, ... read more

Note: this will be the last entry for awhile as my trip is complete and now I'm back home to numerous hugs and kisses from my girls. I crammed as much as I could possibly get into 3 weeks and I had a great trip, but 3 weeks away is a bit too long I think (especially for Mikaela, but for me too). Ann is awesome, of course. I've put lots of other blog entries up (for which you didn't get emails). Just click on my name and scroll down and you'll see the whole list (in reverse chronological order). Or, just go to this link: www.travelblog.org/Bloggers/gtimmermans/ and scroll down. Lima In 1532 the Spanish Francisco Pizarro landed in Peru with a force of around 180 men. Conditions were favourable to conquest, for the empire was ... read more

En 11 aar gammel ... read more

For all of you that said we were crazy for going to South America, that it was dangerous, that we shouldn´t trust anyone, this is a tribute to the incredible South Americans we have met in our travels. Rachel and I have been the recipients of so much kindness and help from people whom we could never repay. Many times we would have been lost or in some trouble without their help. I would like to introduce you to a few people we have met who blessed and inspired us. Giamba is an increbily humble sculptor we met in Yepeyu, Argentina. He has made good money from his artwork, but chooses to live with his family in tents on a campground that he is helping to restore in his small town. His passion is learning the ... read more

We are leaving today! We have been in Lima, the capital of Peru, for the last couple of days. We are staying in a very wealthy area here and it feels as though we aren´t even in Peru! There are American stores everywhere, including Starbucks and Tony Romas, BMW cars, very few street vendors, and less amigos greeting us with a buenos dias. The city is incredibly divided between the extremely wealthy and poor, and it is a stark reminder of the reality here in South America. Easter Sunday was spent waking up at 4:30 a.m. to watch the procession of the risen Christ. The procession began after 4 a.m. mass with over thirty men and women carrying an enormous shining white float covered in waxed choclo (Andean corn), waxed grapes, hundreds of candles, and a ... read more

Wooooooo-Hooooooooo!!!!! PERU!!! So, I think most of you know I didn’t end up going to Ica to volunteer…but for those of you who don’t - it was just too weird. No phone for 15 miles or so, I would have been alone once the kids left for the day, and (safety concerns aside) how the hell was I going to learn Spanish sitting in my little dirt-floor hut all by myself?! So yeah - I decided to fly into Lima and will set myself up with some sort of volunteer position (to give me some structure) and make a little life here :-) So I left on Sunday...and my trip took a couple unexpected turns. But that just makes better stories, now doesn't it?! My plane ran out of fuel before landing in Lima. How bad-ass ... read more

Unfortunately since we had to be in Cusco for the 3rd March, we only got to spend one night in Lima. Having listened to everyone saying how horrible Lima was, we weren’t expecting much and weren’t too worried about spending long here. However, Lima turned out to be quite a cool city. Yes, it was busy, noisy, and a bit dangerous but so are most big cities. The colonial centre was beautiful, and the food was great (much better than Ecuador!). Another day or two here would have been nice. img= http://photos-857.ll.facebook.com/photos-ll-sf2p/v191/89/64/193107857/n193107857_35249665_4087.jpg center Lima Plaza de Armas, a really nice place to enjoy good food for an hour or four. Supposedly, once a year, the authoroties fill the central fountain with Pisco Sour (the local liquor - or paint stripper, we couldn´t work it out which) ... read more
