No siella tuli kuitenkin melkein 4 viikkoa oltua. Tai kavin ma yhden pitkan viikonlopun viettamassa Huarazissa, Andien kylmyydessa.. Limassa minua oli jo bussiterminaalilla odottamassa ystavani Erica, nettituttuja hankin. Menin hanen perheensa luokse asustelemaan, eivat asuneet ihan siella missa muut turistit jyraa teita..oli hyvat ja huonot puolet siinakin..yksi huonoimmista oli, etta matka yliopistoon kielikurssille kesti puolitoista tuntia s... read more

We had a similar journey back to Lima from Puerto Maldonado involving a plane, a bus and a boat! The minute we arrived at the hotel Paul and I tried frantically to sort out accommodation in Baños (think we managed) and then proceeded to get ready for our last night on the town with the GAP group. Paul had been threatening to shave his head since we left Ireland and he decided that tonight would be the night! So off he went... happy as larry...... but....... half way through the shaver decided to stop working!! ;-) I have to say I thought this was pretty funny, but Paul on the other hand did not. It looked like the shaver was clogged and Paul needed a screwdriver to fix it. We had lost our Swiss army knife ... read more

Steve - The flight to Lima was pretty short which was nice and we got there early afternoon. It was a short ride to Miraflores our base in Lima in a taxi but pretty mental. The roads are crazy! There are no rules and the air is filled constantly with the sound of horns. They don´t seem to know how to use their mirrors so they constantly beep so people know they are there. Taxis beep you to see if you want to be picked up, cars beep to acknowledge one another, they beep if you drive badly, beep if you drive well, mental. And at the lights as soon as it goes green, cars that are 8 cars back beep immediatley to let everyone know its green. So glad we are not driving here! Lima ... read more

i embaked at 6am on a jurney that was due to get me into lima at 11pm that evening, when you consider the time difference ths was a 28 hour journey, i absolutley needed every one of those bloody marys that BA give out for free. at the heathrow i noticed that everyone was dressed quite smartly, aprt from me in my combats and red and white checked shirt, i compard this to ow i travled to india waistcoat and all and wandered if i was travelling comforably or dressing the part of someone going travelling? i could not decide but realised that i actually felt more comfortable in my smarter cloths. as i checked my bag in i got slightly worried as i did not have to pick my bag up at miami it would ... read more

afternoon ¿Chicha? had this strange purple drink at lunch today its made from maize and its really sweet, very popular here and very tasty ... however the guineapig carcass in the supermarket did not look so appealing. had a nice walk to the next district (miraflores) this morning and stayed there most of the afternoon avec our new american friend Erin. Its like the Kensington of london so we felt right at home haha. They have a great big shopping centre set into the side of the cliff overlooking the sea hwich was really cool. Stayed there for lunch and then went bowling lol not too peruvian but great fun all the same. Walking around Barranco and Miraflores was great the buildings are really old and theres a lot of colonial influences, its really beautifull. Went ... read more

at last ! we are here, a day later than expected but here at last. the flight was really long but we survived. my one meal for the twelve hr flight was peas, carrots and greenbeans with some tea... yum yum. The stupid guy at immigration only gave me and péte 30 days visa even though we are allowed 90 so now we have to go to the embassy and pay for an extension muh, the ride from the airport to the hostel was possibly the scariest taxi in history. About ten minutes in they pulled us to the side of the road and both the driver and the guy who met us at the airport stepped out ... read any guide to peru and this is not good, having soiled myself thinking we were about to ... read more

There isn´t a whole lot to say about Lima from my experience I´m afraid.....not because it has nothing to offer but I was still on a go-slow after the trekking in Cusco & couldn´t bring myself to traipse around in search of the billion museums that are dotted about the city. After listening to the woes of other travellers I decided to fly there as apposed to the 25 or so hours it can take by bus.....the long bus-trips I can handle but living on my nerves for that length of time isn´t fun......all this finger-printing & smiling for photos before heading off on a roadtrip doesn´t inspire confidence in the least. However a local man did tell me that the reason wasn´t so much to do with road- traffic- accidents but rather to help prevent ... read more

Oh Lima, what a city...it really grows on you, sort of like an underappreciated mole. I had resolved the city was mainly just a sespool of smog and crazy drivers. It is in fact a sespool of that, plus some beautiful views and plazas and people. We hopped on some buses into the center of Lima and ended up in the shantytowns accidentally which was scary as hell. The plaza mayor though, once we arrived proved to be quite nice, with literally about 200 police and assault vehicles because of El Cumbre that happened today. We ended up meeting some colorful people who talked to us about subjects ranging from Obama to the meaning of certain English words such as "cyanide, brawler, moral ledger" and "toddling". Also, I befriended a stray dog who immediately grew quite ... read more

From La Paz we crossed the border into Peru. Our first stop in Peru was Puno, as small town on the edge of Lake Titicaca. From here we took a boat to the floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca. There are 42 floating islands where people actually live and we were shown how they build the islands and the houses ... clever stuff! Next we took a boat over to Amantini Islands where we stayed with a local family for the night. It was a bit bizarre as they didn´t speak English and we haven´t learnt much conversational Spanish so there were lots of silences! Despite being awkward, tt was good to see how they lived and eat real local food. In the evening we got dressed up in local costumes (girls in embroided blouses and ... read more
