When most people think of Lima, the next thought that comes to mind is that long layover before flying to Cusco and Machu Picchu. But Lima has preserved history in a way that is truly amazing, by adding culture and accessibility. In fact, there was such a variety of sights and experiences that it’s really hard to write them down in an orderly way. So, I’ll start of with our kid’s highlights. Part 1: Intro and Kid's Highlights Part 2: Our Mini-pilgrimage and Domingo de Ramos Squid Ink Pasta The food scene in Lima is impressive, highlighted by some big name chefs who have made an impact on the city. But more importantly for our family of 5, it is affordable! And by affordable, I don’t mean that you can go street market diving for $1 ... read more

19 February 2014 – Wednesday – Lima, Peru Walkabout Lima. San Isidro and Miraflores. We are staying in a small apartment in San Isidro, Residencial Sori, at 3060 Avienda Arequipa, one of the main through roads in Lima. It is very noisy with steady traffic all day and most of the night. We begin our day with a walk in the neighbourhood and a disappointing coffee and empanada at a local bakery. (The coffee was so poor, more milk than coffee, micro-waved but still cold, that we sent it back and asked for a bottle of water in its place.) Both San Isidro and Miraflores are residential/commercial suburbs south and nearer the coast than the historical centre. The streets are lined with lovely, well-maintained houses and apartment blocks, as well as high-rise business towers of a ... read more

Sunday 9th February (Odyssey Day 93) It was a lazy breakfast of bread rolls with jam today. We certainly had an easy start to the day. Ellie and I soon headed out to the San Francisco Monastery and catacombs. It only cost S/. 7 to enter this beautiful looking monastery. You do need to have a guide to take you around though and we had to wait about 10 minutes for the next group with an English speaking guide. The tour was very informative but a bit rushed. The guide was certainly enthusiastic about the place, though he seemed to speak in a whisper most of the time. Perhaps that was just his way of adding to the enthralling atmosphere of the place. In the ossuary are piles of the bones of approximately 25000 people found ... read more

I started writing this in Cusco airport waiting for Lima flight and chose title purely for alliteration. However it has proved to be horribly prophetic. Who has ever heard of an entire city of 9 m people totally banning the sale or consumption of alcohol for 48 hrs before & on the day of a major civic election? Well....you guessed it...Lima does..& it just so happens that the election is on Sunday..so no wine till Monday here! Luckily we head to Amazon tomorrow, but meantime really are drinking lemonade...yeughh! I assume they don't trust people to tick the favored box after imbibing uno coppa or dos. who knows, but I bet Pachacuchec didn't inflict that on his people. Agua Calientes was a unique place with no road access and only buses up & down mountain to ... read more

Up around 9a.m. for breakfast and meet&greet. Yummy buffet-style choices: scrambled eggs, meat, cereals, yogurt, fruit, breads, honey, etc. Sat with Kathy (from plane) and met Lisa & Farrah. Given the options of the day - several tours were arranged (walking and bus) but the four of us opted to explore on our own. We had very few pre-conceived notions of the city and a very short list of specific things we'd heard about, so we figured that we could figure it out! First, though, I wanted to go hang-gliding (never done it and what a view from the cliffs over the ocean!) with a married couple from Chicago. Unfortunately, I had no way to meet back with my girls so decided to postpone. It worked out for the best, though, because they reported later that ... read more

Okay, this is the boring post that covers the travel day. Gotta be done...if only to see if this thing's working! Next days are written, but we're about to head out for adventures, so posted later tonight. Many, many more pics to come! Seattle to Houston Left home at 3:30a.m., flight from Sea delayed to 7:30a.m., flight uneventful - mostly slept - watched new "Sleepy Hollow" tv show for free. Baggage issue in Houston, had to run out to baggage claim, grab it, recheck to Lima and get back through security. Made it to the gate just in the nick of time! Still, had time to call mom and then Katie while boarding. Gotta make sure someone knows what's going on at all times! Super excited for the trip and nervous about the group dynamic and ... read more

Current Location: Cuenca, Ecuador Ron I want to write a little on our train experience on July 27th, 2013. A train runs once a month from Lima to the town of Huancayo in the mountains. On the way, it reaches a max altitude of 4829meters (15,700 feet) before coming to rest in Huancayo at 3260 meters (10,600 feet!). I dont know why it only runs once a month -- the trax all seem to be in good shape, etc. though im sure i wouldnt know a 'bad' track if it hit me in the face! Ha! The journey started from Lima's Desamparados (downtown) station at 7am on a rainy morn. We had changed hostels on thursday from the Kaminu in Barranco to the 1900 Backpackers in downtown Lima, well knowing that we'd have to be up ... read more

9/8/2013: Arrived in Lima and went to the Point hostal in Barrio Barraco around 13, got a nice room and some good breakfast/lunch while waiting for the girls who had taken the plane instead. When they came we went for a walk and found a starbucks on a small plaza. Walked a little more and had dinner at a nice burger place. Really delicious. Back to the hostel where we had some beers in the patio and tried to teach some Brazilian guys Danish and they ended up writing a not very understandable song. 10/8/2013: Got up a little late and went for a walk downtown around Plaza de Armas and the city center - the city is quite quiet for it's size but very pretty. In the evening we had dinner at the hostel and ... read more

We are finally here! But this trip wouldn't be an official dovzak-heath trip without an official screwup (like when we got on the wrong train when leaving Varanasi 4 years ago and, boy, was that a screwup!!!) so we decided to get it out of the way first thing this trip so we missed our connecting flight out of LAX to Lima!! Oh, boy!! Not very good! On retrospect, it was due to a series of events that came together, conspiring against us. First, our flite in PHX sat on the runway for an hour until traffic cleared @ LAX and then the luggage took a half an hour to come out (why we didnt just check our bags right thru in PHX dont ask me!) and then we waited a good 20 min. for the ... read more

Preface Details/Outline of S. American Sojourn, 2013 Setting the Stage for My Travels Ottawa June 30, 2013 Pre-departure Entry (Jul3 Departure for Lima) Well here we go again! I am, yet once more, off down the road travelling S. America and I will be doing what I can to blog my trip, laptop/1TB external hard-drive, camera/long lens and 50mm prime at hand, and minimum gear, almost only carry-on, but still a little too heavy for my own good. I will need to whittle this weight down some.I'm travelling on the cheap, staying mostly, if not almost entirely, at hostels and looking to stay on the road for as long as I am enjoying myself; the only other f... read more
