3rd July- 4th July after a restless night sleeping in a room filled with little scattering cockroaches we woke up at 5am to board yet another bus! Ballestas Islands (part of Paracas national reserve), nicely nick-named ¨the poor man´s galapagos¨, offered a short 2 hour tour through the nearby islands off the shores of Pisco. islands, filled with birds, and covered in white (alot of birds, alot of shit!!), containing a maze of caves and home to a multitude of cute Sea lions. there are 5 females to every male sea lion- the men are twice the size of the females, and i get told that due to their jealousy and aggresive nature, they often attack other males for supremacy or keeing thir concubine; even attack their new born males due to an eventual possibility of ... read more

After an early 6.30am start we set off from Pisco to Paracas and the Ballestas Islands, Paracas is a little fishing port, which has been totally set up to run tours to the Ballestas Islands (commonly known as the poor mans Galapogos). We set off an a 20ft speed boat with about 25 people on board, the very saftey consious locals made us wear life Jkts made of polystyrene (Great) On arrival we were welcomed by a dozen penguins then loads of pelicans and families of sealions a really cool place. the sea was churning up a big swell next to the rocks, but the boat handler still managed to get us about 10ft away from the sun bathing seals. Those that know me will be surprized to hear that I didn't chunder, so yes we ... read more

With an early bus from Lima we arrived in the little coastal village of Pisac. The only reason to be there is to make a trip to the Ballestas Islands and the National Reserve of Paracas. So we used the day to shop around to find the cheapest and best organized trip, cause that´s the only way to get there. My God, prizes can be really very diverse for the same trip, from 35 soles to 35 dollars! Thanks to the hostel where we stayed, we booked a really cheap and good trip. Because of the bad weather at the see, the port seemed to be closest at the day that we wanted to leave. So we had to change our plans and be a little bit flexible, but it gave us the opportunity to visit ... read more

It was just a brief visit to the town which shares its name with the locally produced, white-grape brandy drink which is commonly knocked up into a refreshing Pisco Sour cocktail in this region. The name Pisco actually means "birds" in the local language of Quechua and was named as such because the area is host to millions of the feathery creatures. Pisco itself is fairly non-descript, it´s pretty small, not particularly attractive and primarily serves as a base for discovering the nearby nature reserve at Paracas and the wonderful inhabitants of the small islands called Islas Ballestas (sometimes referred to as the poor man´s Galapagos). Pisco Sour Ingredients *pisco brandy *sugar *lime juice *egg white Whisk and serve over ice The Islas Ballestas, which can be toured in a morning by speedboat, host flocks of ... read more

Thats what the guidebook calls it..... Las Islas Ballistas. Just off the coast of Peru.... near Pisco It was a buzz of wildlife activity. We took a boat across to look at wonders of nature. We saw thousands of pelicans - swooping in to fish, a few penguins- sat on the rocks and loads of seals- being very noisy and smelly! It was many ´firsts´for Lotte, who was unbelievably excited about the whole thing.. especially at the thought of swimming in the pacific ocean! Even tho the water was very cold, after once seeing Lotte run into the North Sea, I knew she would not let this stop her!! And of course, it was great fun!! Even for Lo and I (our big first was seeing a pelican!) it was very exciting, so many birds and ... read more

A quick change in our plans lead us to the small coastal town of Pisco, where there are beautiful chicas and plenty of birds. Pisco lies between Ica and Lima, and offers great tours to Peru´s Paracas National Park and Ballaestras Islands, which are considered "poor man´s Galapagos." Let´s just say that during the two hour boat ride, there were alot of birds. Tens of thousands of birds on a small island, which is white because, yes, it´s covered with bird droppings. There is also an abundance of sea lions. Over a hundred sea lions lying on the coast line, making wailing sounds that can be quite disturbing when echoed off of the shoreside cliffs. The tour ended at 4:00PM, and now we´re sitting in the town of Pisco enjoying the high speed internet. Will head ... read more

Stayed at San Isidro Hostel - very good place, swimming pool, friendly staff, TV and HOT showers! Dropped off at the Pan American junction whis must be why they call it Cruces Pisco - literally in the middle of no where! There was a bit of confusion at the stop - cause I was like "THIS IS IT"? Mean while the line of those waiting to get on was getting longer by the second. I was assured by a passenger that this indeed was Pisco so I hesitantly deboarded the bus and asked for our bags, then had to run to the otherside of the bus to get them which is basically in the middle of the road. Sean thought I vanished for a bit - my arguement is that if he'd study his Spanish he ... read more

Well after leaving Lima, on a 3hr bus ride to Pisco which cost NZ$10 (try going to whangarei for that price!!!) we were dropped off on the side of the road at a "stop". This consisted of people trying to get you to buy sweets and water, and taxi drivers trying to get you into their car. After working out that there was nothing else around for a few miles, we enquired as to where Pisco was....the locals simply pointed down the only other road around...Dubiously we got into a taxi as we didnt fancy walking the 6km in the mid day sun. We had sorted out a hostel to stay at and after arriving and seeing that it had a pool we relaxed a little as the town is basically a shanty town. We asked ... read more

Hello! On our final day of our tour we visited Pisco, purely to do the tour of the Ballestas Islands. In fact Pisco has a bad reputation for safety and because we arrived late and left early the next day, few of the group chose to leave the hotel except to buy snacks. The islands were fantastic though- we got to see loads of birds, including the Peruvian boobies, and sea lions AAAAAAND penguins!!! The sea lions were amazing though because they were all over the place including one beach with about 1000 of them moaning and groaning. We also saw loads of mums teaching their children how to swim. Very cute! After that we travelled to Lima to spend our last night together as a group. Hotel was lovely- a good one to finish with! ... read more
