Hi All, We woke up nice an early to make sure our bags were packed and weighed the right amount, and that all the essentials were in there!! We could have as much as we wanted in our day bag but we knew we would have to lug it around for the whole 5 days coming up!! Our first surprise was the amazing breakfast, it was ‘son gratis’ which means free, it was so good with so many options eggs, cereals, pasta, etc… There were two groups heading out, one was for the Inca trail and the other for the Lares trail. For some reason they mixed up the groups for this first day; as we were all doing the same tour and ending in the same hotel!! (Bad start in my eyes). Our first stop ... read more

I know that this might not make sense to those reading back home, but we have gotten a little tired of travelling at the moment. Don't get me wrong, we love the sights we've seen they've been remarkable, the treks, food, people, weather all have been fanstatic. But right now we are craving a small bit of normalcy, we want to stay put, unpack our backpacks into a drawer, stop, take a breath, reflect some and appreciate what we've seen and done. So that's exactly what we did in Cusco, we put our feet up, found an Irish pub and relaxed and regrouped. Now might be a good time then to update everyone on some of the general apects of our adventure thus far. Accommodation: We've been largely staying in Hostels across South America and been ... read more

Hola everyone hope you all are doing well. Right now we are in a place called Cusco this is a city with rich history about the city and the Inca's. The city is out side of Mach Picchu. Cuzco is actually at a higher altitude then Machu Picchu. Cuzco has many museums and in the Sacred Valley one of the ruins that we went to was called Pisac this ruin was my favorite because it had all these Incan tombs that had the skeletons of the Incan's in them. There were tombs at the top and the bottom the reason why they were in different places on the side of the mountain is because of social status if you were at the top you were probably near royalty but if you were near the bottom you ... read more

Wednesday, February 18, 2015 Todd woke up at 5:00 am and went to the lobby of our hotel in Machu Picchu, El Mapi. Today we have a little free time in the morning. Cindy and I ate breakfast in the hotel restaurant around 8:00 am. The breakfast was pretty good at this hotel, however the selection of items was much less than other hotels, but still good. One thing that was awesome about the breakfast was the large glass window with an awesome view of part of the Andes. Probably one of the top best breakfast views, next to the Marriott Hotel in Budapest overlooking at the Castle District. Following breakfast we went to the hotel lobby and worked on the computers. Cindy Skyped and Todd worked on his blog. We needed to have our overnight ... read more

Today Kelly and I took our long anticipated tour of the Sacred Valley. The tour got off to a shaky start when the tour company told us to get on one bus, which apparently was the Spanish speaking bus. After driving a couple of miles down the road the bus stopped and the tour guide told us to get on the bus in front of ours. After making our way over to that bus and climbing on we soon realized that this bus was Spanish speaking also. In the end the tour guide spoke in Spanish but would translate for Kelly and I. The bus was old and unimpressive, but for $30 dollars we were not expecting much more. And as awful as the bus was the view made up for it. The Sacred Valley or ... read more

The Sacred Valley of The Incas is the valley formed by the Urubamba River, and was apparently a place the Incas were rather keen on. And it's easy to see why. The scenery is stunning and the amazing Incan ruins make Stone Henge seem like child's play! Since we are high in the Andes and this is winter, the weather can be rather cold but so far we have been very lucky - dry and mild with lots of sunshine. But when the sun goes down at 6pm it gets cold very quickly indeed. We started out to Ollantaytambo after a lovely egg breakfast at the lodge. Ollantaytambo is known as Olly for fairly obvious reasons. The small town was an old Incan village that is really well preserved but better yet is the Incan temple ... read more

Although it wasn’t the most restful sleep, we were all quite pleased with it’s duration of ~10 hours. Following a hotel buffet breakfast we checked out of the hotel, leaving most of our luggage with them, heading out with only backpacks and feeling slightly giddy at traveling into the Andes with only what we were carrying on our backs. Our taxi was right on time for our drive to Ollantaytambo. The drive started with a seemingly nonsensical back and forth through Cusco that gave us an opportunity to see more of the city as we gradually climbed even higher to the ridge where the highway is. As we reached more remote and less touristy parts of the city, we started to feel we were getting more of a sense of how people actually live. There were ... read more

Arriving in the Sacred Valley we noticed two things which had been scarce around the rest of Peru - trees and tourists. I had assumed that we had been above the tree line as we travelled along the Andes through central Peru. It turns out that all the trees were chopped down by the earliest inhabitants and only the less useful, bushy species remained in any number. The severe lack of decent wood had a profound impact in the Spanish conquest of the country. The main reason for the Spanish military successes was the use of mounted cavalry, against which the Inca's had no response at close quarters. Had there been trees available they would have been able to fashion pikes to enable them to spear the horses, out of reach of the swinging swords. The ... read more
