The day has arrived. It's been very fun and very interesting, but unfortunately today is the last day of our trip around Europe. After an earlier-than-usual breakfast we drove about an hour west to Monaco. This is the second smallest country in the world, behind Vatican City, and while both countries are very wealthy they take a very different approach to displaying that wealth. Monaco is sooooo ostentatious! Our first stop was the famous Casino Square which is part of the Formula One circuit, and we found that it was hosting a small car show....Ferraris, Porsche, Rolls, Lamborgini, McLaren etc. Pretty amazing to be honest, but as our visit progressed we realized that the car show wasn't so special. There were uber-fancy cars on every street, and when we went down to the marina the mega-yachts ... read more

Another rough day in the Côte d'Azur. Breakfast was followed by a couple of hours by the pool but this time I read classic car magazines rather than property magazines. I had choosen a few vintage Ferraris and Porsches and was about to phone in the wire transfers but instead decided that it might be a better idea to visit Nice for the afternoon. Nice is about 30 minutes from our hotel and while it was a lovely afternoon, I don't need to hurry back now that we've collected the fifth Hard Rock Hurricane glass of the trip. The beach front walk was nice(!) enough with some very cool Art Deco buildings, miles of beaches and a few mega yachts in the marina, but the roads were packed and the fenced-off beaches for each hotel were ... read more

Today was a very relaxed day for us here in France. Our hotel does a very good basic breakfast by the pool....coffee and croissants etc. We enjoyed that and then, armed with a few local property magazines and my sunglasses, I took my place by the pool as the kids went swimming. A half hour later I was totally ready to make offers on several of the massive villas by the Med but then decided that a dip in the pool might be a better idea. A couple of hours around the pool was followed by a light lunch and then we piled into the rental car to look for a beach. Most of the coast around here is rocky but the hotel manager pointed us towards an area around Theoule-sur-Mer where there are a few ... read more

Bonjour tout le monde! This morning we left Prague and flew via Lyon to Nice in the south of France. We are down here for three days/four nights and our plans are to be a little less active than we've been for the last 10 days. We still have a few touristy things to do here but the hotel pool also beckons The highlight of the flight was the French fellow on the seat ahead who was definitely Jack Lindop's doppelgänger. I managed to sneak a photo. Yes, he needs a haircut but otherwise it was Jack's twin! If you know Jack, check out the photo and tell me I'm wrong! We splashed out on a convertible rental car that should add to the fun while we are here, although the weather forecast isn't good for ... read more

Our second day here in Prague has involved a lot of walking again but we included a few more drink stops and added a tram ride so our legs are less tired than yesterday. High on a hill close to the castle we'd seen Prague's answer to the Eiffel Tower and we made that our first destination this morning. We walked over the river to our second funicular railway of the trip. The 40 minute wait for a ticket may have been a mistake as I'm pretty sure we could have walked up the hill in half that time. But then again we'd have ended up with tired kids in this heat so maybe it was the right call. At the top of the hill is the Petrin Observation Tower which is a 1/4 size imitation ... read more

As expected, today involved a lot of walking which was made a little tougher by the extreme heat. The kids have been very tolerant and even if they are tiring of looking at old buildings, they're hiding it very well! We left our hotel close to the Powder Gate and walked through the main square along small cobbled lanes all the way down to the Charles Bridge. This is a old pedestrian stone bridge crossing the river and is a major tourist attraction. It is beautiful but the crowds were huge which detracted from the beauty of the scene. Of the four towns that we have visited so far on this trip, Prague is certainly the most crowded. We climbed the Little Quarter Bridge Tower at the west end of the bridge and enjoyed a great ... read more

We left Vienna this morning on a four hour train ride to Prague. The trains have been a great way to get around but they've been very full so it was a great decision to reserve seats that evening a few days ago in Budapest as we'd never had found four seats together otherwise. Vienna was a great place to visit, but the fact that it was a little more upmarket was made clear by the fact that despite looking Ben did not find a single shop to buy a football (soccer) shirt. I don't think he'll have a problem in Prague! On arrival in Prague we ran into the now-familiar problem of not having local currency cash to pay the taxi driver. In Vienna we found someone reluctantly willing to take a credit card, here ... read more

We have to confess to being slow off the mark this morning. Walking around in this heat may be taking its toll. But we did eventually get out and see a lot of Vienna, and we were really impressed with what we saw. This is a town that loves the arts....Brits might call it posh! The street performers here prefer harps and violins over guitars and accordions. There are incredible buildings and parks in the center of town that are very impressive. We walked from our hotel through the middle of town to the Rathaus, which is the town hall for the state and town of Vienna. I didn't really expect the route to be anything noteworthy but it was very special....it seemed that there was another stunning building, park or square around every corner, and ... read more

Thanks to Midge Ure and Ultravox we have had a theme tune for today. Our last morning in Budapest was relatively quiet. We visited the nearby market to get food for the train ride to Vienna and headed to the station via the very-modern and efficient subway/underground system. The train to Vienna took just under three hours and gave us new views of Hungary, along with glimpses of Slovakia to the north across the Danube. The train was quicker and far cheaper than flying but it did have one big downside....more stinky people. I'm sure that 97f/36c is exacerbating the problem but there is real opportunity around here for Right Guard. On arrival in Vienna we took a short taxi ride to our hotel. Much like Kraków we are just on the edge of the town ... read more

Kraków was a fun and interesting town but Budapest is definitely a level above. This is a big city with a rich history and a lot to offer visitors. I would not say that Budapest is necessarily better but it has more to see and do. Our second full day here in Budapest was good. This morning we took the tram from near our hotel to the Parliament but were disappointed that the next available entry tickets were two hours later. So that meant we had to just stay outside to enjoy the scene and the fine weather. The architect was apparently inspired by the British Parliament and you can certainly see the similarities. The surrounding buildings are almost as fancy and it was another reminder that this town has an illustrious history. Just along from ... read more
