The nice thing about chicken is it never goes bad. It’s like honey that way. I’m not sure if there’s anything nicer in this world than laying in the hammock on my balcony feeling it cool down as a storm rolls out over the Caribbean. I don’t exactly understand what it is about the ability to wait for something that is considered virtuous. If thusly deemed, I’d like to bestow the title of suckiest virtue ever. I think adding it to the virtues is a trick by the elderly who have failed to learn the lessons of life and become more kind, forgiving, honest, faithful, charitable or virtuous in any real way. This could just be me deprecating a virtue I don’t have of course as I’m on board with the owl from the tootsie ... read more

As I lifted my bare foot from the smooth, dull grey, slippery surface of another round topped river stone to fight through the current that seemed to cut my feet from beneath me, and then stretched out through the flowing, fresh, cool water to find another sure spot to set down my slowly shifting weight, I realised how great things at that exact moment in my life were. And as I think of that thought, and take into consideration this moment right now, I feel pretty fortunate still. I am here at the Northern tip of South America, just out of the jungle covered valleys of the Sierra Nevada of Colombia taking another step in a journey that has run through all kinds of different worlds, and has put me in company with some wonderful ... read more

I finally ended an unhealthy relationship I’ve been in for a while now. There’s only so long you take all the negativity and the screaming on the phone before you figure out that you deserve better. I’ll miss DirectTV, but I think the pain is part of the process. I’ve introduced the term ‘rere’ as in retard, to Colombia via my students. There’s nothing like hearing one student tell another student “stop being a rere!” to let you know, that somehow, in just a little way, you’re doing some good in the world. Christine, I know that makes you proud. If I was to describe the weather here right now in a single word I’d probably go with mindnumbingwillsappingstrokeinducingridiculousnous. Or hot. I have a kind of weird parent who always shows up at my class ... read more

I think the biggest difference between here and the US is the quality of CornNuts.* Last week I went to the world’s biggest Vallenato festival, about 4 hours from here in car. What’s Vallenato you ask, as far as pop music goes, Carlos Vives is poppy Vallenato. Who is Carlos Vives you ask? Anyways, it’s a local music that is insanely popular here, in fact in my little town if I care to hear it any hour of the day or night, one needs only to crack open a window and let it in. A lot of accordion and scraping a cheese grater with a stick. Sounds great I know, but I actually kind of like it. The Vallenato festival is in Valledupar, south of here, where it began in force. People from Valledupar are ... read more

So........ my bag was stolen and we headed to the capital...Bogota, to sort out a new passport at the embassy. Expecting a dirty, sprawling city we were pleasantly suprised when we arrived at the sue hostal ( which would become the closest thing to home since we had left). Situated in the older part of the city, spanish colonial style buildings, colourful streets dotted with murals and some amazing graffiti aswell as cool places to hang out we had landed ourselves a chilled little home while we waited for my passport. We spent a few days wandering the streets around the area, some great flee markets and art museums. We had a little taste of colombian art, when we went to the botelo museum, loads of repulsive paintings of really fat people.nice. but they seem ... read more
