27th August- 29th August: Taganga 29th August- 3rd september: The Lost City We made our way to the fishing town of Taganga, staying at a hostel called ¨casa de felipe¨which just had the collest vibe...but more about that in 2 entries. From here we booked the Lost city tour! CUIDAD PERDIDA- THE LOST CITY! (literal translation). this was definitely one of my highlights in Colombia! and i love Colombia!!! Let me just say i could not describe to you the feeling i got walking through the tropical forest whilst rain was storming down on us...then looking up at the rain through the tropical trees...it was magical! Cuidad Perdida was only found around 1974 by tomb robbers who came across it accidentally. The years that followed and the fights that ensued were bloody. It became known as ... read more

I don't know why Colombia isn't considered part of the Caribbean sea. I was born in Barranquilla and never understood why we are overlooked as part of being Caribbeans. On August 25/06, I went to Colombia with my Cuban friend Tony Guerrero. We landed in Barranquilla and after spending a couple of nights in Barranquilla, we decided to pay a visit to Cartagena. The visit to Cartagena will be posted as a separate entry. After spending 5 days and nights in Cartagena, we decided it was time to hit the real adventure. On September 2/06, Tony and I went back to Barranquilla and took a bus to Santa Marta for the equivalent of US$2.92. Once there, we took a cab ($6,000.00 pe... read more

We started our time in Colombia with open minds but I think we were all secretly a little scared. Made the mistake of checking the foreign office website the day before and it didnt do much to make us feel better. The jist of it was, you can go to Colombia we recommend it only on business, dont go here, here or here, dont use roads, fly everywhere, and dont do the trek to the lost city. Hmmm... Anyway the border crossing went without a hitch and we even met a friendly policeman who had a 10 pound note he was trying to change for dollars! It was weird to see english currency after so long, I guess he must have taken it as a bribe for something! We had been told that the section of road ... read more

Hello, me again. I feel that today, as our numbers continue to grow, perhaps I should start by welcoming all new bloggers from across the world into the family. Worthy of special mention must be Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, although I can't deny feeling a hint of jealousy; I have to make do with writing mundane entries about cleaning sand from my orifices and embarrassingly located mosquito bites and I won't have some bearded fundamentalist pissing on my chips with all his talk of exercising his fundamental right as a sovereign nation to cruise into the nuclear age! (All's fair in love and war though, Mazza. Just get in touch if you lose your camera and need me to draw you some pics...) So moving on. I left you somewhere along ... read more

Decided to take a cab up the coast, we were going to get the bus but it took 5 hrs and was about 2 quid, cab however was air conditioned, took about 2 and a half hrs and cost about 8 quid..No contest really. This place is a proper Colombian holiday resort so well busy and of course nobody can speak English. Got a hotel called Casa Familiar which if my Espanol is getting any better must translate to "cockroach ridden 5hithole", only a dollar a night though so mushn´t grumble as the boy lard would say....decided right away one night only here and we´re gone.... Nice beaches here mind you and loads of bars along the front, went to an area called El Rodadero found a nice little boozer and ended up staying there the ... read more

This will be a short entry, as I just feel like sharing this with you guys, as it doesn't happen every day to find a scorpion in my bedroom... I just got home tonight and let me tell you I live in a nice area in El Rodadero, a nice house, not in the middle of the jungle.. well, anyhow there it was.... in the middle of the room, staying still. As I turned on the light it probably got interrupted from its scorpion activities and ran for cover under my backpack which was lying on the floor.I am not the neatest girl in the world, you see...and in my defence, I have just came back from a trip and the maid is coming on Tuesday... Anyways, I was pretty scared, but my first instinct ... read more

We arrived in Santa Marta with the knowledge that we weren't covered by our travel insurance as the FCO advises against travelling here.. so certain that if we were going to break a leg it would be here!! Luckily we didn't. We also got our first look and dip in the Caribbean sea!! But we did decide to trek for 6 days through the jungle to find the remote, hidden and recently found.....Cuidad Perdida (Lost City). We again, were not covered by insurance, especially for kidnapping as it was here where our government thinks we would be most at risk, mostly due to some kidnappings 3 years ago. But from what I hear.. when the guerrillas kidnap you, its more of a holiday.....free food, free accommodation, free weed and free Spanish lessons. Not bad! We set ... read more

Santa Marta is a small town on the coast, with very friendly people and very high temperatures. Aiesec chapter here is young and actually they function more as an extension, not a real chapter on its own. As I understand, they are waiting for a big national conference where they will brief the MC about their results and if the MC is satisfied with their work, they might obtain the right to function as an Aiesec chapter with full rights. Well, apart from me, there are only 2 more trainees, from the States, Joel and his girl-friend Stephanie, and we all work as teachers here. The town is small and there's nothing much to do around here, it reminds me of the countryside where we used to go when we were little to visit our grandparents, ... read more

Zonalito is a recruitment event. Aiesec recruits new members by promoting their leadership and cultural exchange programme in universities. The students recruited go on an Induction weekend where they get to know what Aiesec is all about. As Cultural Ambassador on behalf of Romania, I joined the jolly group. I took part at all their activities and delivered my Romania Country Presentation previously designed in power point. A fun-packed weekend in a finca outside Santa Marta. Great fun!... read more
