A Colombian told me that they were getting into the Christmas spirit because it was getting windy. It does mark the beginning of the holiday season, but for someone used to the cold indicating Christmas is on the way, it seemed a touch strange. I spent the weekend on the beach in the eco-park Tayrona. I’m crazy sunburned, and never feel so out of shape as when I backpack in and almost die of heat exhaustion. Similar to the weather back home right now I suppose. We listened to Roxette’s greatest hits on the way home and it was awesome. Friday was the day Catholics believe Jesus was immaculately conceived, meaning, yes, another three day weekend. Apparently his gestestation time was really short since he was supposedly born like 18 days later. Birthday at school was ... read more

“I now thirty-seven in perfect health begin. Hoping to cease not ‘till death.” According to Uncle Walt I have seven years before I even get started. I had a tomato basil sandwich for dinner, I need to buy a new pillow, I need to finish watching the Royal Tennenbaums and I think the Chiefs are going to win the Super Bowl. A weird candy they have here, called Bom Bom Bums, like blowpops, but coughdrop flavored. Pretty gross. The psuedo Skittles, Sparkies are good though. In the wake of a Thanksgiving where I skipped dinner had no traditional food at all, I’ll write a little ‘things I’m thankful for’ list. My hairline. About to turn 24 for the 7th time, unmarried, it’s still going strong. Who knows how long it’ll last, but it’s been a good ... read more

“Beer, of course, is actually a depressant. But poor people will never stop hoping otherwise.” ~Kurt Vonnegut. I have officially declared 11:41 the trickiest time of all time due to its visual proximity to 11:11. Making people make wishes for no good reason. It ought to be ashamed of itself. I have a crazy swollen finger from some ferocious insect attack While I Was Sleeping. Kind of like the movie except no Sandra Bullock and the bug didn’t start hooking up with my brother while I was in a coma. Oh, and I never went in a coma. You know how in the states, we have spiders, and although they are creepy and sometimes people tightroll their jeans everynight before bed so brown recluses don’t bite their boys* we tend not to kill them because they ... read more

My class and I went on a Field trip last Friday. Made me remember why I don’t eat pig. We went to the pens where they raise these pigs and it was about the grossest thing I’ve ever seen. They were inoculating the little ones, one guy would hold a pig up by his ears while it screamed in a very human fashion at the top of its piglet lungs and another guy would stab it with a syringe. It was kind of like Requiem For a Dream, but the pigs don’t end up losing their arm. Or as far as I know they don’t. We went to a finca (farm) as well that had a sloth. Funny Spanish translation, a sloth here is called an oso perezoso, or lazy bear. I’m not a terrible dancer, ... read more

I know because I tried it, finding the Lost City. Yes trekking through Colombian jungle, up and down and up craggy rocks and slippery rocks and some more rocks, but that was after the many colours of mud and tiny path ways and before the multiple river crossing and then finally up 2000 + round rocks covered in moss that they like to call steps. I spent 6 days and a considerable amount of money to find out that I hate trekking and never plan to do such a foolish thing again. I got back yesterday and I’ve been told that when time passes and the swelling goes down from both ankles and the blisters are a mere vague memory that I will feel great about my achievement. We’ll see. I’ve let time pass, it’s ... read more

Something difficult; teaching the meaning of the vocabulary word “dishwater” to a bunch of young patricians. Dishwasher is a person, who neither they nor their parents have even been, and this makes it a little difficult. I finally just explained that it’s one of the reasons that while poor people stink, sometimes their hands smell good. Does anyone else think Velcro sounds like a bucket of water hitting the ground? Another teacher here, Brian, and his wife, the child psychologist for primary, are having a baby. Funny thing, any days he takes off get deducted from her maternity leave. The below level students in my class, get taken out for English reinforcement. Funny thing, they always take them out during Religion class. I guess they figure if you are undereducated, the last thing you need is ... read more

So today was Tight Pants Thursday, no one has sported pants like me today since Dokken broke up. Good thing about wearing super tight pants is that nothing falls out of your pockets, what goes in stays in, they’re like Vegas. I can appreciate this since a sizable bit of this Colombian monopoly money fell out of my pocket in a cab not long ago. I’m thinking of making a street dog coffee table book, just in case when you have kids you need to induce vomiting, you can just crack that mother open and bam, saves you a trip to the emergency room. My mustache coffee table book is selling like a madman, saving marriages all over the US as women realize how lucky they have it since their men don’t look like porn stars ... read more

May the wind take your troubles away My curtainless, tvless, largely furnitureless urban camping experience continues. You should stop by the school and see all the “Vote for Jesus!” Signs. Or “Vota Jesus!” to be more exact. Turns out there is a kid named Jesus running for vocero* (basically class president). He also happens to be the cutest little 2nd grade midget ever. What’s funny is he’s not the shortest kid in his class, but man he will be. I feel like when I’m in the shower that someone kindly translated the handle for me. You have two choices, turn it to the left towards the C - and get freezing Cold water, or turn to the F - and get Frio (cold). It’s great. Sure the C is supposed to represent Caliente (hot), but that’s ... read more

Every plan is a tiny prayer to Father Time First thing, soccer is pretty freakin’ entertaining when you know the rules. I recently had one of my more exciting sporting moments in which I was an active participant (coaching counts right?). My 4A class came back from a 3-0 halftime deficit to win with the 4-3 game winner with like 20 seconds left, to defeat our archrivals, 4B. I’m a great motivator. My teams got no quit in them. I’m like Herm Edwards except I manage the clock better. Thus referring back to my true love American football. Thing about the Chiefs is they prepare you for the inevitable downfalls of life but breaking your heart every week. Which in my mind indicates they are providing a greater service than what some like to call the ... read more

8th september- 13th september Back in Taganga always felt great. I grew to love this place- there was just an awesome vibe about this place! Each time i came to leave, something would hold me back! Definitely alot of fond memories of this small, otherwise unremarkable, fishing town. The days were largely spent chilling, either on the beach or in the hostel (casa de felipe). Sunset watching became a favourite past time- each sunset different to the next, and almost always spectacular! I cant write about Taganga without mentioning ¨Kelly´s Juices¨-by far the best juices i have tried in South America. it was a daily fix, often more than once. Tropical fruits, some of which i have never tried in my life before- Sabote, guanabana, and lulu...oh i love lulu!!! Kelly came to know me as ... read more
