Geetings from the mad country. Sorry all, I know I was off the grid for a while like the Chinese guy in the Matrix. I took a pretty madcap trip over Semana Santa/Holy Week. I have determined that you very much miss the best parts of the country by flying over it rather than driving Colombia’s wild roadways. The car treated us well, despite two flat tires, the two tows and several hours in a mechanic place. It finally rained, and man did it. In my little hamlet alone, there were a number of sweeping out to sea drownings. You know what was awesome, the church trip to the Holidome on the first secular Friday of Al’s social calendar. Friday I left straight from school for Bogotá, a 20 hour drive due largely to the ... read more

A freaking jellyfish stung me on Sunday. It’s feels kind of like getting stung by a bee. Except underwater, and you don’t have that satisfying knowledge that it cost the bee his life to sting you. You know what Latin America has a lot of? No, not low wage laborers. Okay, some of those too. Trash. It really shocked me how much trash is everywhere when I first arrived. I try not to litter but I’ve gotten to know some trash pretty well in marathon searches for a trashcan. It still hasn’t rained. The last time I remember it raining was when Adam was here, right after Halloween. I think sex offenders should be forced to grow mustaches. If they break their parole, or relocate without notifying the authorities they get a mustache tattooed on. ... read more

Close to Tatanga is Tayrona National Park, which has some beautiful beaches on a jungle covered coast. It was hassle to get their as we had to get a local bus to the park and then walk for a further 2 hours to Cabo a place on the beach we wanted to stay, which is most popular with travelers and we could see why. looking back it might of been easier to get a boat direct to the beach as there must be someone willing to take you. The main attraction is a Cabaña with hammocks sat on a hill over looking the beach and ocean. Beautiful scenery and would of been a great place to sleep, unfortunately they were fully booked and we had to settle for a tent close by to the beach. It ... read more

After our stay in Cartagena next up was Santa Marta in on the Caribbean coast. There were a few reasons for us to decide to come here. First was the tour to Ciudad Perdida (the lost city) which is in the middle of nowhere in deep jungle, like the name suggests. Built between the 11th and 14th century and then the people wiped out in the 16th century when the Spanish arrived. The trip takes a total of 7 days to hike there and back. After looking into it we decided to leave it as the pictures we looked at didn’t look brilliant and the cost of 115 pounds each was a bit pricey, it used to be 75, which we would have done. Our second reason was to do some more diving. We decided to ... read more

Parin huonon paikan jälkeen tavattiin kadulla eräs ... read more

Have you ever had smoked stingray from a street vendor? Or diarrhea for 8 days? The two questions are unrelated. So I made it on tv in South America again.* Turns out some camara man was watching me dance retardedly by myself, thought it made good tv and put it on every evening newscast as an example of gringos at Carnaval. At least half of my students and both of my bosses didn’t see it. Lucky for me dancing provocatively on tv gets you a promotion in Colombia. I went to an all day outdoor concert one day, the Festival de Orquistas, which is like a battle of the bands. They were charging 500 pesos (like a quarter) to use the bathroom which is reasonable, but all the guys were just lining up on these wood ... read more

Dramat borjade nar en bokhandlare fran New York fick ett allvarligt astmaanfall forsta dagen ... read more

Nothing like lying back in your hammock reading your book while overlooking the night lights of the small fishing village Taganga, and then a complete electricity blackout. The four of us just rocked back and forth, helped by the strong winds and had some sporadic conversation, everything is understated in Techos Azures (where we are staying), nothing too stressful, our main worry is getting a nice hammock or space on the beach to see the sunset! I fell asleep in my hammock but as wake up was nearly falling out I decided to hit my bed instead. Taganga is beautiful and worth the 20 hour plus bus journey from Bogota, even though they claim it's only 16! The bus was fabulous, we were so well impressed. That was until the air con came on so strong ... read more

School’s back in session, we just took a field trip that kind of sucked, Friday (2nd) was Shakira’s birthday and my kids took a stomping in intramural soccer, lost 4-0 much to my shame and to the extreme detriment of their grades. Rumor has it the gay, America hating, ex-pro hockey player (Washington) who steals the tennis courts at the best times everyday has been ejected from the country. For being gay. Not really, for being violent in his encounters with the locals. He tried to claim he was just being “sassy” but since this culture’s too macho for such a homo word, out he went. Speaking of homosexuality, I just found out Thomas Jefferson* had a lisp. All I have to say to that is “ssssweet asssssss!” Strangely so did Martin Van Buren*, and John ... read more
