Carnival is tomorrow, I'm sure I'll have a number of madcap stories to tell you after. Us teachers are planning some costumes that would be stunningly unPC and any pictures will pretty much prevent me ever seeking public office, but here it’s all good, in the spirit. Carnival is hedonism, debauchery, and self indulgence. I do my best to avoid all three on a normal basis, but Carnivale brings out the worst in me. Like rollar hockey. I've watched several movies since I've been on break. Dr. Zhivago is excellent, and the actress who plays the lead is beautiful. Being an actor really is like being immortal, since I imagine this lady is probably pretty old by now and not so beautiful, except maybe on the inside and who cares about that? This theory also justifies ... read more

Wow, there is something really weird going on in here...I have finally found all the male travelers that were mysteriously missing in the rest of my trip. In fact pretty much everyone is here. I never imagined that there would be so many people traveling in Colombia, in fact I was all geared up for solitary hotel rooms again like Bolivia but boy was I wrong! Anyway, getting back to what I ment to be writting about.......I mentioned to Marlien, a Dutch girl in my apartment in Taganga, that I was thinking of doing the trek to the lost city but I was still umming and ahhing over it, so when she said the same we decided to motivate each other to get our arses out of Taganga for a bit and go together. The trek ... read more

Happy Festivus! The nice thing about not celebrating Thanksgiving is that you can start playing Christmas music earlier without the stigma that often accompanies pre-TG festive music in the States. Things I wanted for Christmas that I totally got. 1. A chance to meet Miss Colombia. 2. A pumpkin pie. The man who hit Stephen King with a minivan died of an "accidental overdose" a year after hitting him. Lesson to be learned, don’t hit spooky horror writers. Speaking of Stephen King, the movie 1408 based on one of his stories is excellent and one of the scarier movies I’ve seen in a long time. Oh, and I have a man-crush on John Cusack. If I was in charge in of Homeland Security I’d just go to a Royals game and anyone who was rooting for ... read more

As James (one of the guys in the trek) put it, ´this must be one of the greatest adventures of all time, lads!´ No one is really sure how far we walked during our six days in the jungle, but a conservative guess would be 45 miles, most of it being on a steep incline. The trail afforded great views of mountainous jungle vistas with steam radiating up from the greenery, turquoise rivers, tunnels of pure vegitation... it was like hiking through Jurrasic Park, sans the reptiles. There were probably about 25 river crossings, and mud bogs 100 meters long. We all came out with hundreds of mosquito bites each. It was certainly more difficult than any of us expected, but very rewarding. On the first day, we got a ride in a converted Land Cruiser/carnival ... read more

The day had finally arrived for me to be sitting on a beach taking in the tranquility........a feat I had been trying to obtain for many months and had pretty much given up on as there are very few good beaches in the countries I had been in. Sharyn and I got ourselves organised and then got a lift into Santa Marta with Santiago to catch the bus out to the Parque Tayrona. In Santa Marta we had to grab some food and other necessities before finding the bus, this in itself proved to be a very fun experience and very Colombian. When we walked into the supermarket we found two men, one playing guitar and the other keyboards through an amp, and belting out a few salsa tracks for the shoppers who were enjoying the ... read more

After a slow start Darragh, Sharyn and I made it to the bus station and onto a bus that was apparantly going directly to Santa Marta, about 4 hours north of Cartagena. It didn't take long for all of us to get comfortable and enjoy the chance to do nothing for 4 hours on the bus. Only a couple of hours later though we pull into a large town and were told bluntly to get off the bus and change to another smaller one......yes just another instance where they tell gringos whatever they want to hear. Again after a bus ride that took longer than expected we arrived in the bustling town of Santa Marta. Santa Marta is a large industrial port town with not a lot of interest for us so we jumped straight into ... read more

Tayrona National Park - a little bit of heaven, except for the chickens, and the skull cracking falling coconuts.... and the horses who EAT everything, including the last three chapters of my murder thriller before I´d finished it!!! Oh and the mosquitos carrying dengue fever! But I guess the balmy waters of the Carribean where we skinny dipped in the rain and the gold dust mica which is mixed in with the sand so when the waves roll in the sea is full of gold sparkles and the warm rocks you can lie on in the sun and the coconuts which if they dont hit you on the head are there for the eating make it an alright place to pass a day or two!... read more

Howdy everyone! I am in Taganga right now, it is a small town outside of Santa Marta at the northern tips of Columbia. I figure I should do a short update, since I haven´t updated for a long time... well, a lot of things have happened, I would love to feed you on every single little one of them, but it would take me days to put it into writing. I promise though that at a later date I will do a detailed update..... as the Internet here is actually rather expensive. My rough itinerary is to head to Ecuador next after Columbia and then start my Amazon river travel to Brazil...then settle down for a bit in Brazil (I am really tired of dragging my 30 kg luggage everywhere I go...especially when I am looking ... read more

One thing I don’t like about the English language is the term left handed makes them sound as if they are different but equal to right-handed when we all know this isn’t true. Spanish improves on this with the word zurdo, which makes it sound more like the handicap and indicator of a malevolent soul that it really is. "Don’t trust that zurdo son of a b." Or "Of course he cheated on his wife, he’s a zurdo." This rhymes with sordo, which is also an affliction, deaf. The question portion of the show: Why is it that every work meeting I have turns into a pre-Festivus airing of the grievances? Is there anything sketchier than a military non-competitive government contract? Like fine wine, does Bon Jovi keep getting better? Did anyone else recently discover that ... read more
