Hey Everyone, Greetings from Colombia! As you can see we are alive and well and definately taking advantage of the beauty and diversity that Colombia has to offer. Another blog is coming soon for the Colombian Coast, as this page is all about our trek to Ciudad Perdida or the ¨Lost City.¨ Located in the rugged Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Lost City is an ancient site that housed around 1500 inhabitants from an indigenous tribe that does not exist any more (built around 500 AD). The city is a marvel of engineering, built on a steep valley wall using thousands of hand cut stones to create an assortment of terraces that houses were built upon. It is an amazing site and has a rather mystical air to it as it is surrounded by deep valleys, lush ... read more

What can I say other than Taganga turned out to be a disappointing experience for me. Taganga is only 15minutes away form Santa Marta and is the sort of place where people go for 2 days and end up being there for 2 months. The difference being that we only had 2 days and the main reason for my visit was to check out some of the infamous diving of the Caribbean. Unfortunately I became a victim to South American time (This is that there is no such thing as being on time or a schedule). After committing to diving a local ship wreck and one of their many sights I managed to turn up at the diving school at 7am (even though I had no alarm clock), I proceeded in waiting for nearly an hour ... read more

Santa Marta is 6 hours around the coast from Cartagena and can not compete with its old city but is the gateway to paradise (Tayrona National Park). We had a brief stop over here but soon moved on to its neighbours.... read more

The advice to visit Santa Marta was much appreciated! A small tourist town with nice beaches and friendly locals. We were happy to meet Jose, our waiter, our first night when we ate at Ricky´s where we got the local scoop on places to go and things to see. Our days at Santa Marta were busy exploring the beaches, restaurants and local festivies. Although we had to adjust to the sight of soldiers on every corner with machine guns day and night, we learned to appreciate the safety and serenity of a town that protected its tourists at all times. After a week in Santa Marta, we set out to explore Tyrona National Park with our new friend Jose, equipped with our backpacks, tent, plenty of snacks, and all other necessities to challenge the jungle for ... read more

The first script for the Karate Kid originally called for Daniel LaRusso to have spina bifida. I missed the Sports Show at Bartle Hall this weekend. What a great event that was to work, all the free concession food you could handle, almost no work, and the tips galore. The best was the time me and Bob bribed one of the guys selling conversion vans with a hot dog and sat in there watching the Arizona/Minnesota playoff game, whatever year that would have been. Jake the Snake before he was helping tank the dastardly Denver Donkeys. A few interesting anecdotes from the trip coming back from Bogotá. Colombians don’t find mooning to be as hilarious as I do. Nor do they have a real verb for the action.* What exactly is the age when you aren’t ... read more

Hola amigos I arrived in Puerto Jimenez looking forward to going to Parque nacional Corcovado & the abundant animals that are there. I wanted to do a two day hike with a night camping in the centre of the park to do a round trip, unfortunately the rangers told me it was full & I could only stay at the first ranger station in the Parque. I headed for La Leona ranger station on a 3km wank on the beach in 30 odd degree heat, I almost melted. The first day of walking didn't really reveal too many different types of animals, I really wanted to get a good picture of a scarlet McCaw in the wild, but they fly too high for a good shot. That night I slept in my tent not knowing if ... read more

“When a day that you happen to know is Wednesday starts off by sounding like Sunday, there is something seriously wrong somewhere.”* So we’ve reached 2007 (which according to the gypsy woman will be the best year of my life, but then she said that of 2006). If you parlayed a bet on the 4 games the Chiefs needed to go their way, you would have won 700 to 1 odds. Some new lunacy from my stupid bank, if I use one of my bank’s ATMs, but in a different city, they charge me. A couple of nights before Christmas, I was watching TV with Piero’s parents, and they had this story from the night before, about this kid who lost his family in a crowded city square 19 years before and went on the ... read more

Thing about windy season is, man is it windy. Like -can’t open the front door if the back door is open- windy. The pool whitecaps out of the it’s constraints, windows break all over the building, cats and dogs living together, mass hysteria. I think I’m going to change my thesis topic to how Colombian Movie theaters are a reflection of all that is wrong with Latin America. In the Spanish dubbed version of the A-Team, B.A. Baracus is named M. A. Barracus, the "M. A." for "Mala Actitud" (Bad Attitude). It’s high season officially, meaning cabbies feel more justified than ever trying to rip me off arming themselves with temporada alta.* It’s nice though, my town is usually pretty quiet, but it goes nuts this time of year, with every hotel and apartment building bursting ... read more

Happy Holidays!! I wish you and yours a happy holiday season Hopefully I will get this posted before the holidays are over. I am currently in Santa Marta, Colombia. It is a town on the coast about 4 hours north east of cartagena. I am trying to go to cartagena but there is a problem since it is the height of the tourist season in Colombia and it is difficult finding a place to stay there. Santa Marta is a cheap enough place to stay, I have a small private room with cable TV for $4.25 a night. There are several nice beaches within a 20 minute drive but I am not in a beach mood right now. Hopefully I will make it to Cartagena for Christmas and before my visa expires. After Christmas I ... read more
