Up early this morning... ignoring the bottom situation and headed to the Belem markets. Lasted 15 minutes, nearly fainted from the heat and smell and headed back to the hotel. The colonial architecture is fantastic, once again, and there are tress growing out of gutters and drain pipes. Beautiful churches, spices, guarana, bananas, papaya, lots of beans, rice and meals for the cooking. Was wonderful but needed sugar top up. Tottered back... man in business suit walking ahead of me had colour A4 picture of a rather hard cock and wouldn~t let me get past him. Is this the Brazilian version of flashing? Maybe he~s impotent. The gang arrived back at the hotel room with a vast amount of supplies and held a room picnic. Brazilian words don~t end in consonants, so a picnic is pronounced ... read more

Lucky me, I caught a bug and the official chute from mouth to bottom has re-appeared :-( Not a happy camper. Spent the first day reclining in the cabin and read 11 Minutes by Paulo Coehlo, a Brazilian writer. In the afternoon locals rowed out to the boat with fresh produce and it~s standard practice to throw them some processed foods, too. Not feeling physically ill but need to be near a toilet, just in case. Watched City of God with all the boat last night. An 18 year old, decided i was his premiere australian girlfriend and was going to teach me all about love. oh really?!?!? (tremendous monobrow). Shell had experienced the worst tongue in her kissing life the previous night, so did a quick check that he did know how to kiss (6/10), ... read more

Hello, this Jaya writing her first blog entry for Salvador and Brasillia. Salvador is one of the most beautiful cities I have been to, it was the first capital of Brasil and it has a huge African influence which you don't get in the rest of Brasils cities that gives it its rhythm. Its kinda like how you imagine Brasil to be, with beautiful old colonial buildings some restored beautifully others crumbling and dilapidated both existing side by side a good example of Brazilian society in general. We arrived in Salvador just one day after the carnival and the decorations were still up (if you are particularly afraid of Stephen Kings “IT” the movie with the evil clown, Salvadors decoration of huge clowns will be one big nightmare) and there was a general party atmosphere in ... read more

Hi Everyone The lack of an update the last few days proves how much there was to tell you all about Rio and how we were short of news since we did all the main touristy things. This is a bit of a long one though... Anyway, after the excitement of Monday´s trip to Christ the Redeemer and Sugar Loaf we spent the rest of our time in Rio chilling out. Tuesday was a day for completing two missions. The first was to get our clothes washed, the second was to sort out accommodation between Thursday and going to Ilha Grande on the Saturday. The first task was, surpringly by Rio standards, completed pretty easily and we dropped off our clothes to be picked up the next day. It cost 4 pounds to get a massive ... read more

bom noite- we write this from a little town called puerto seguro (meaning safe port) that is north of rio about 1,300 KM. it is a sleepy little town that serves as a jumping off place for the beaches of brazil both north and south. We have had a great time since leaving rio discovering little beach towns and the rigors of bus travel in south america. two nights ago we found ourselves extremely tired after our 19 hr over night journey but managed to blearyly drag ourselves to a beautiful call arrial d´adjuda. This place is absolute paradise. it is up on a bluff over looking bright blue or green ocean which is met by white sandy beaches. the water is like jumping into a warm bath tub. at night we got to experience our ... read more

Arrived Santarem and headed for the beach, 45 minutes of being thrown about in the back of a pick-up :-). Like being a kid on the farm, do it again, do it again! The beach is on an island in the middle of the river, some days you can walk across, we jumped in a dinghy. Water was about 25* and sublimely clear. Swam about for a few hours, then planted our chairs in the surf and drank beeries until lunch. Just to give you an idea of food prices. Lunch cost 20 reals (AUS$11)and was a full fish, with a tomato and onion relish, plain rice, seasoned rice with fruit and veggies, a coriander and cucumber salad, black bean stew (which is to die for)and vatapa (a mealy mash). It fed 4 people. Jumped back ... read more

South America » Brazil » Rio de Janeiro February 9th 2005

this will be quick as we working on the details for our next destination. On sunday we got our chance to experience carnival and the parade first hand. We got to the sambadrome at about 9:30 pm and didn't leave till 8:30 the next morning. It is quite an experience to be in the thick of things; the crowd dressed up in many colors, the lights flashing, the fireworks to kick off each samba school, the music, standing up and dancing, sitting down and waiting for the next school. to give a quick sense of the parade....it starts with fireworks that are in the schools colors to kick off there program. the school then has 120 minutes to dance down the 700 meter parade route. in this 120 minutes each school will have about 8 to ... read more

Massive episode of claustrophobia last night. Woke up on my top bunk with nose about 2 feet from the roof and decided I couldn~t breathe. Yay!!! Midnight walk and back to bed. Huge brekkie of fruit and eggs and then outside to be immediately tracked down by Johnathom (J-man). Spent morning playing gin-rummy, memory and learning Portugese on the ~lido deck~. Starting to enjoy the siestas and lost half the arvo sleeping! Emerged and was abducted by 10 year old Eliane, my digital camera was adopted by a small group of children who took around 100 photos in 90 minutes, flattened the batteries and screamed with delight, looking back at all the pictures of themselves and the boat. Lounged back and watched the sunset, then had a check of all the gringo passports by the military, ... read more

Been here 10 days now and the partying, late nights (or early mornings!) and booze are catching up on me a little! Not seen so much of Rio itself, done the obvious sugar loaf, Christ statue but mainly beaches and recovering from the night before!
