This entry's all about a not-so-famous-but-great-nonetheless place called Curitiba. It's located a bit down and to the left of Rio for the geography students amongst us. Curitiba was described in the Lonely Planet as one of Brazil's urban success stories, and we thought we'd check it out on our way up to Rio via some beaches and other places. We arrived on the 18th of Jan in the early evening, and basically crossed the road from the bus station in order to check into our hotel. This was mainly for convenience, because the next morning we planned to take the "Scenic" train down to a place on the coast called Ilha do Mel (translation :- Honey Island). We got the tickets for the "Scenic" train and headed into town to check out this urban success story ... read more

Our home in Salvador is pure luxury - a hotel room overlooking Praca da Se, in the Pelhourino district, Brazillian´s consider as the home of music and culture. The sights are picturesque with cobbled streets, colourful buildings and smiling friendly faces. My office-conditioned body finds the days tough, so we spend the day lazily strolling the streets in anticipation of the precarnaval street party! We head out at about 6pm and we can already hear drums through the streets. There are open air concerts in the plazas, stalls on the street (selling every possible cocktail) and people everywhere. At last, I am able to dance in Brazil! Poor dan was feeling a little under the weather, and a little out of place (people seem to think I am Brazillian, so manage to blend in), but I ... read more

hey all, it was sad to leave the beachfront apartment in Natal but we have to move on. i will never forget our bus trip into town, only to get on a coach to olinda who displayed similar qualities. i dont mind a fast bus but driven by a host of would-be ayrton sennas is worth a few caipirinhas before 9am. olinda is a stunning town - cobbled streets, colourful houses and bands of drums kicking off the evenings at sunset walking through the streets. our first taste of carnarval!! only problem with this town is it made me sick and i know i got ripped off at every turn. their favourite term in english is ´no stress´ but it is mucho stresso when tired and sick. --dan--... read more

After a thirteen hour bus journey we arrived hungry in Florianopolis. We had been spoilt by Argentinian bus journeys and found it difficult to get used to crackers as our only nourishment for thirteen hours. We picked up some maps of the area and set about organising some transport. A car seemed the best way to get around so we hired one and set off for Ilha de Santa Catarina (Santa Catarina Island). Barra de Lagoa We got to know the island pretty well looking around for a pousada (a mini appartment with kitchen etc.). There seemed to be lots happening on the beaches from football to sandboarding. We eventually settled on Barra de Lagoa, a little fishing village with lots of tourists, most of them Brazilian. The pousada we stayed in was across a pretty ... read more

this will be short but at least it is a start. we are in brazil in a little hostel called crab hostlè. This morning we got up had a little cafè and walked two blocks to the white sandy beach of ipanema. the sand was so warm that it was buring our feet. for those that have never made it to rio, it is must see. the beach is surrounded by jungle covered hills, all of the buildings have little terraces that are covered with flora of all kinds, and everywhere you walk people are going to the beach. Tomorrow we are staying with the Serra´s and will be able to explore more....things to come...hanggliding of sugar loaf?? Surfing in apadora? hiking the rio blanco trail and more. Love to everyone!! Ben and alana... read more

After three days of doing little more than sunbathing, swimming and eating, we thought it was about time we got back down to some ´real´ travelling. The Brazilian Cataratas (falls) We hired a taxi driver for the day to take us to the Brazilian side of Iguazu to get our bus onward to Florianopolis. Before we got the bus, he took us to the falls, a bird park and the amazing Itaipú dam. Our driver (can´t remember his name, lets call him Jorge for simplicity) collected us at 8.30 am and we set off for the the Brazilian border. After passing through immigration we drove on to the Falls. The National Park on the Brazilian side is pretty different to that on the Argentinian side, when you enter the park you have to hop straight on ... read more

Hey all, Still in sunny Natal - today was our buggy ride which headed north across the sand dunes and many deserted beaches. The buggy picked us up from our glorious beachfront home where we met two other travelers from Norway who we were sharing the buggy with. The Norwegians dont come small, so all was very cosy and tight grips, especially when we sped up the wall of death´ and dropped down the ´vertical descent´. i did a bit of sand boarding and some contraption that may pass as a flying fox, the best bit being rescued by a raft. for extra excitment on the buggy or the other things we always say ´´si si´ when asked ´com emocao?´ (with emotion). i have come out a screaming hot pink while hazel just keeps on tanning ... read more

hey all, what a lazy day! we headed to the party beach of Natal, Porta Negra. it is very much like bondi except more parties, more people, more shops and cheap. the beach is full of white plastic lounge chairs and umbrellas. unfortunately that australian nerve kicked in around here, like the one in europe that finds it outrageous to pay for public toilets, they ask you to pay to sit on the beach. this was hard to accept but no one sits on the sand so we walked the length of the beach determined to find the cheapest spot on the beach. It was a lovely day. Kicking back on the beach with a parade of market vendors going past you. Some were great - drinks (alcoholic), sunscreen but my favourites were the guys who ... read more

My 25th birthday was unforgettable.. what better way to spend it than on a sunny beach in Natal! We found a breezy ocean front hotel room in beautiful Praia dos Artistas - a local beach, which was a short trip away from tourist-filled Ponta Negra. Guys - be warned, this entry is likely to only be of interest to the girls (waxing involved).. Girls - I know you will totally understand! Coming from a few weeks of Winter, I had some girly admin to do. So I set off for an adventure to the favella´s (slums) beauty salon, accompanied on the walk by one of the locals just in case. I did this after much consideration.. (how in the world was I going to explain what needed to be done, these things are not in phrase ... read more

hey all, finally made it to south america! so good to get hit by a heat wave after the europe´s winter. the fun started in the immigration ue where we were greeted with tv news reports of the days violence in sao paulo, confirming we have landed in one of brazils more questionable cities.. all the more interesting. after an unusually long headless chicken performance one does landing in strange airports we were set to head out. Along the way we found an equally lost canadian. Our canadian was a barman/actor out in brazil for 2 months and declared safety in numbers, or more to split the cost of a taxi. He told us of how he had threaded chicken wire through his backpack because he´d heard stories of locals ripping them off with knives. he ... read more
