this will be quick as we working on the details for our next destination. On sunday we got our chance to experience carnival and the parade first hand. We got to the sambadrome at about 9:30 pm and didn't leave till 8:30 the next morning. It is quite an experience to be in the thick of things; the crowd dressed up in many colors, the lights flashing, the fireworks to kick off each samba school, the music, standing up and dancing, sitting down and waiting for the next school. to give a quick sense of the parade....it starts with fireworks that are in the schools colors to kick off there program. the school then has 120 minutes to dance down the 700 meter parade route. in this 120 minutes each school will have about 8 to ... read more

Massive episode of claustrophobia last night. Woke up on my top bunk with nose about 2 feet from the roof and decided I couldn~t breathe. Yay!!! Midnight walk and back to bed. Huge brekkie of fruit and eggs and then outside to be immediately tracked down by Johnathom (J-man). Spent morning playing gin-rummy, memory and learning Portugese on the ~lido deck~. Starting to enjoy the siestas and lost half the arvo sleeping! Emerged and was abducted by 10 year old Eliane, my digital camera was adopted by a small group of children who took around 100 photos in 90 minutes, flattened the batteries and screamed with delight, looking back at all the pictures of themselves and the boat. Lounged back and watched the sunset, then had a check of all the gringo passports by the military, ... read more

Been here 10 days now and the partying, late nights (or early mornings!) and booze are catching up on me a little! Not seen so much of Rio itself, done the obvious sugar loaf, Christ statue but mainly beaches and recovering from the night before! Went to the Sambadrome to see the parades last night so thought I´d share a few photos with you.... read more

Afternoon everyone - how is everything with you? We seem to spend so much time talking about ourselves, what´s going on in your lives? Hmmm....sounds interesting. Anyway.... Photos will hopefully be making their way onto this site at some point, as prompted by Andy´s Dad. However, I´m afraid he and the rest of you will need to wait until we find an internet cafe that lets us do that and work out how we post the pics. Rest assured there are some good ones. In fact, all of our cameras have taken a real hammering since you last heard from us. Having ummed and ahhed on Sunday night about whether to go to the main Carnaval sight, the Sambodrome, the fact that most of the city seemed at a standstill convinced us to go for it. ... read more

And who was a grumpy bear today?? The church bell starts at 6am and there are no curtains on the windows. Need sleeeeeeep!!!!!! We farewelled Manaus with the obligatory burger and juice, then headed for the port and our river-boat down the Amazon. They~re like the old steamers, you see in the movies. The locals hang their hammocks on the first and second levels. We were in cabins on the first level, then there~s only cabins on the top level. Or the Lido Deck, as we liked to call it. There~s about 3 feet between each hammock, so they~re piled in there like ants and swinging in motion to the boat. We had somw hammocks with us but it was so incredibly hot and gave me motion sickness that I only spent about 10 minutes there ... read more

Today was fabulous. Started with the obligatory shopping and purchase of supplies for our boat trip, most of the sites are still closed due to Carnaboi but pattered about anyway. Incredible contrast between slums on river and the commercial areas next to them! The musos and their families, picked us up around 1830 and drove us 20 minutes to the Manaus beach. They were quite wealthy and attended a massive white elite church we had passed on the way to Carnaboi but they were the loveliest people. The poor people use the public beach and the wealthier people pay a tax and are boated to private beaches. We hit the public beach with the musos, went for a walk, sat on the esplanade drinking beer and eating plantan banana) chips and then strolled along the funfair ... read more

Stinky, muggy weather... eating huge breakfasts of fruit and eggs! Spent day shopping, found a real supermarket and bought a tonnage of munchies. The cream biccies are excellent and only about .40c a pack. Oooj and Shell were too exhasuted to head to the Carnaboi but it goes for two night, so I hit the town with Caz, Daniel and some new friends we~d met. The stadium is set up like a Parade Ground. Two fake cow heads are on either side of the stage. We were down in the middle with our rocket fuel and dancing like lunatics. Markets surround the area selling food, drinks, clothes and jewellery. There are two nights of õfficial~dancing and this was the first night It~s mesmerising to be in the middle of a crowd all dancing the same steps ... read more

Evening all, 9pm Sunday evening here and a lots happened since we mailed you last. Before getting into it, a quick bit of admin. If any of you don´t want to receive these regular updates feel free to unsubscribe yourself. We won´t be upset I promise!! Anyway, rest assured things will be a bit quieter for a while once we leave Rio on Thursday. Anyway, Friday night was something of a write off after Thursday night´s shenanigans so nothing much to report. We woke up on Saturday really excited about the trip to the Maracana stadium to see the Rio derby between Fluminense and Flamengo. The bus picked us up at about 2pm for the 4pm kick off. Before we go any further, a few quick facts about the Maracana. It´s record attendance is about 180,000 ... read more

Manaus had their parade with floats last night, when we were still enroute. Manaus is one of the major towns but does not pander to the tourists with over-the-top parades, so the Carnaboi atmosphere more authentic and it was great fun. Manaus has the Teatros Amazonas, an incredible theatre built by Portugese colonists for their own cultural pleasure and on this particularly fine square is also the African House. An equally fine producer of Hamburgers and Passionfruit juice which became our staple diet for 3 days. It was just SOOOO good! Did some boring banking, wandered about the excellent markets, every type of clothing, food, hammock etc imaginable. Down to Porto Negro, to see more markets and bussed out to the soccer stadium to buy our shirts for Carnaboi!! There are two teams in Carnaboi, red ... read more
