23/2 Jericocoa is a hippy, backpacking town, full of gringos and restaurants, creperies, icecream, shops and situated on the perfect long beach with amazing sand dunes, wind surfing, day trips to national parks etc. So its a bit of a tourist hub and it is stinking hot!!! George, our favourite driver threw us in the back of the jeep and we set off down a paved highway. This is actually an event. Clutch broke in one town but after 15 minutes of home mechanics, George had us on the way again. Took two ferries, one was motorised, the other nothing more than a wodden plane being pushed by locals with long poles and then down another perfect white beach, through a national park to Jeri. Cool accomodation, sharing a hammock terrace with the kids, so were ... read more

Left Cabure in the morning yesterday and bounced along in a jeep for an hour to a pousada with ;the best lamb; for dinner. It was beautiful, mangoes dropping off the trees, river at the bottom of the garden and a massive meal of fish, lamb, salads and beer. Packing on the pounds but dont really care! We all piled into a local bus at 5am, I grabbed the front cabin and enjoyed the immense chafing of sunburn on vinyl seats. Passing through small villages, heading to the river, donkeys and pigs wandering everywhere, people riding bicycles to work on roads you wouldnt drive on and a bright orange sunrise. Threw our bags into a donkey taxi for transport to the boat and munched out before jumping onboard the Simbad. I remember the boat moving backwards ... read more

we have had many more adventures since our last entry it is always tough to remember them when we sit down to write again. as predicted in the last email sun did come our way and we spent a beautiful day on a beach called itacarezinho. it was a glorious beach with tropical rain-forest hills sliding in aqua-marine (as in the crayon color) oceans. this was a part of the brazil cost that has not met with the burdens of tourism yet as we had to share the three mile stretch of beach with about 15 other people. it was quite an adventure just to get to the beach as we had to get on a bus with our surf boards and jump off at km 15 then walk down a dirt road for about a ... read more

Tonight we're at Cabure and it's perfect. Bobbed along in the Simbad for 2.5 hours up the river, to this tiny fishing village at the edge of a penisula. The river rns on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other. Beach for miles. A few pesadas and nobody on the beach. Perfect relaxation spot. Went the huge lunch, slept all afternoon and pattered off down the beach for 2 hours late at night, just following the moon and the water. Nobody else was out... except for a few friendly donkeys. Sat on the beach and watched the waves before heading to bed. Spent the next day running about topless with Shells, bodysurfing and getting toasted in the early morning sun. Ooj was going for the strapless tan and walking down the beach with a ... read more

Anyway, Sao Luis is impressive but we're too tired to care! Still pattering around and feeling like death. Lost or gained a day somewhere but not sure when. Shell's has renamed our diet the 's*** yourself thin diet* but we're not sure it will take off in a major way. Sao Luis is another beautiful town of colonial architecture and markets aimed at the tourists. There are a lot of small museums that the owners will escort you around but most of us are interested in just sleeping. We're slowing adding extra people to our group and keep running into the US and Danish contingents but it's good to have new people in the group and laugh with them over dinner! Made it Barreirinhas, another small town on the river. Great food and huge sleep... we're ... read more

Feeling hugely better today... went shopping for the usual muchies. Living on cream biccies. They seem to be the SA snack of choice and they're only 40c a pack, so we're munching out! The river here is beautiful but the beach is an exposed sand dune at the end of town and it's like sitting in an oven. It's also the main thoroughfare for the pedestrian traffic and bicycles, so you sit near the water at your own risk. Chilled out in a square near the church, then hit siesta time and crashed. Highlight of Barra, is the sand dunes in the national park. There's a system of lagoons, scattered about, so we grapped a jeep at sunset and bumped along for an hour to the dunes. Dry season :( and a 2km walk across the ... read more

NEWS FLASH....We´ve worked out how to get piccies onto the site (well Andy´s anyway) so check out the pictures and how happy we look. Just to make you all that little bit more jealous. Anyway, we celebrated Jamie´s birthday on Monday with a romantic little cruise around Ilha Grande. Just the 4 of us, plus about 50 others... After the excitement of getting a cake from the Swedes and a beach tennis set from the boys Jamie´s day got off to a great start. The beautiful scenery and great weather on the cruise ensured things carried on this way. Having had Happy Birthday sung to him by everyone on the boat (in a mixture of about 4 languages) the 27 year old Mr Burch had a very enjoyable day. But it wasn´t over yet... After a ... read more

we got on a bus for valentines day, ahh true love, and headed for a town on the coast - ilheus. after the lengthy 7 hr ride which was only supposed to take 5 we got of the bus and sat to figure out our plan of action. in every town thus far this has consisted of going to the tourist office, talking to travels at the station, ringing a few pousadas, and trying to figure out what direction things are. well after about an hour of indecision and hearing less than glorious things about the town we jumped on another bus with a Norwegian girl and let the winds guide us to itacare´. we still find ourselves in the town after a fantastic couple of days on the beach trying to surf, trying not to ... read more

From the first capital of Brasil to the current: Brasillia. Brasillia, what can I say. It’s a city that was planned and built in the sixties, apparently in the middle of nowhere or in the centre of Brasil whichever you believe. Personally the time it took on the bus to get here, i'm leaning to nowhere. Of course we arrived in Brasillia on a Monday so everything was shut. It was like a city out of the twilight zone, a sixties vision of what the future would look like. The buildings were bizarre, the government zone was arranged in perfect straight lines, you could get a ruler out and measure them perfectly. After the haphazardness of Salvador it was weird to be in such a perfectly planned place. Manjit said it looked like “The Jetsons” I ... read more
