Heh all, We left Rio behind at 7 this morning after having a fab time. Stayed in a great hostel run by an aussi -The Mango Tree-would recommend it highly. Met lovely people there-all diff nationalities and a good few Irish as well (as expected). What A city!!! so much to do! Party central! We had an unreal experience in the Maracana (Flamenco football team´s stadium) last night watching Flamenco (black and reds!!!!)play. We were put in the middle of the local supporters-to call them flamboyant would not to them justice in any way. The whole time throughout the match ´-singing, dancing, playing drums-the passion and colour-unbelieveable-(definitely Flamenco fans for life)-a whole new experience of football! Friday night we headed to lapa to dance samba-another unreal expereince-every friday night a street party (mini carnival) goes on ... read more

We arrived in Ilha Grande on thursday night just as the sun was setting. It was the nicest sunset I have ever seen!! The sky was so red as the sun set over the mountain backround of Rio De Janeiro.....v.romantic!!! We went on a 2 and half hour trek through rainforest to get to one of the nicest beaches called Lopez Mendes. It was a tough trek uphill through the mountains but so worth it when we found deserted beaches and clear blue sea...good times! Beanie fell on route and twisted her ankle....bad times! We hit the town on Friday night and mingled with the locals, drinking Caiprinhas and dancing Samba with a few interesting local boys. Its a bit hard to dance samba after so many cocktails and I may have done a few bad ... read more

The favela tour was excellant... if not slightly disturbing to see the conditions inside it. we started off by taking a motorbike taxi up to the top of the favela...which was quite an interesting experience...apparently you pmly need milimetres between you and the cars you overtake! after that we walked down thru the favela with a guide....they are built on the side of a mountain so it was pretty steep...and also it was pissing down so it was pretty slippy...and yes i was wearing flipflops...it was some form of modern day miracle that i didnt tumble into the open sewers!...the favelas are pretty much what you would expect...altho it was pretty odd to be walking past guys - all of whom were about my age or younger...with machine guns in their hands....which is how the ruling ... read more

Still sore from the previous overnight bus myself and another girl Jenny thought we´d be a bit clever and upgraded to a first class bus for the trip to Sao Paulo, the first leg of what would be 24 hours travelling to Paraty. Seriously worth it. We had a 3 hour wait at Sao Paulo´s mega bus terminal. Another 5 hours of bus to get to Paraty, on which we saw our first good looking person so far in Brazil. Paraty is a beautiful little town with very pretty but highly impractical cobble-stone streets, which you could easily break an ankle on. I found out it´s also a World Heritage site. Paraty is where the tour´s love of caipirinha´s really came to the fore. Our first night out and we went to a brazilian buffet restaurant, ... read more

Ilha Grande - Brazil´s grand islandWe were wistful leaving Rio de Janeiro given how much fun we had there, but the pretty boat ride (complete with dolphins playing in the sea) was enough to keep us entertained, combined with the reputation Ilha Grande has for being one of Brazil´s most stunning islands. What we found was just as expected, but for all the Australians reading this, the island is similar to the beaches back home which made it a little homesick for jean indeed! We did manage to squeeze in a few sights between bites and sausage dog spotting however....City highlights: Flashy speedboat ride to 7 different beaches that included activities such as snorkelling with fishies in crystal clear blue water, climbing into a deep ravine to view the flourescent acquamarine water in an underwater cave, ... read more

Arrived in Ilha Grande after a 2 hour bus trip and 1hr 30min ferry. Yes, ANOTHER paradise island. I'm sorry, but "when in Paris" as they say. Our hostel was right on the beach just out of the town. There were no roads and the little town was very relaxed and reminded me of a sort of Jamaicanesque village. We went to a beach called Lopez Mendez. It is regarded as one of the finest beaches in the whole world and it lived up to it's reputation. 3km long as it sweeps round and dense jungle and mountians behind and huge surf waves, but it was the sand that was really amazing. It was so fine that it squeaked when you walked on it. It was as fine as flour. Anyway my wound had healed so ... read more

The biggest of island of Brazil, Ilha Grande is a little place of heaven. Beautiful landscapes, clear water, nice people, more and more beaches, caipirinhas and samba bands (everyday seems to be a pretext for a festa!) and we relaxed (life´s a beach) and getting sloly ready to go back to reality...... read more

After some hiking in the Diamantina Canyon I went on to Salvador. It is a beatiful city thanks to its colonial architecture, but pretty unsafe. Next stop was Minas Gerais, a state in the interior of Brazil. There I went to see Ouro Preto, the most important gold mining town back in the days. Since the town is situated high up in the mountains, temperatures drop down to 5 degrees... Back in Rio I spent some more days exploring the city, particularly the beaches, together with some friends from Italy, Germany and Switzerland. After that I went with Lena to Ilha Grande, a very relaxing island 150km from Rio. Next stop are the Iguazu falls on the Argentine-Brazilian border.... read more

Hello everyone! Well, we can officially say, WE LOVE BRAZIL!! Let us just set the scene for a moment . . . The landscape is green, lush and basically a rainforest, the beaches are strips of white sand with warm, inviting water and the whole atmosphere just kind of tells you, ¨grab a drink and kick back for a while¨. The drink of choice, of course being 'caiprihinias'...what else....We obliged. Our first taste was the really cute town, Paraty. It is an old colonial town on the beach surrounded by lots of little islands. The whole atmosphere is charming and many hours were spent wandering around and having the occasional ice-cream. It was a beautiful antidote to our 24 hour bus ride. Oh, we didn´t mention the 24 hour bus ride??? How negligent! Brazil is a ... read more
