Day 237 - Wednesday 14 May Everybody keeps raving about this place called Ilha Grande, so I've decided to check it out and see what the fuss is all about. As its not much more expensive and saves the hastle of walking around Rio on my own with my rucksack I booked all my transport through my hostel. The minibus was supposed to pick me up at 10am so I'd had to get up early after only a few hours sleep. However the minibus was 2 hours late and only arrived at noon which was a bit annoying, especially as its a glorious day outside. After a coule of hours driving we arrived in a small town called Angra dos Reis, where a boat was waiting to take us over to the island. I quickly checked ... read more

Friday 2nd May - We arrived at 5.30am to Angra Dos Reis (Land of the Gods) in Rio De Janeiro province. Got very little sleep again as the bus stopped every hour or so and turned all the lights on. Also we were right at the back by the toilet and the bus crowd was a restless lot, to-ing and fro-ing all night!! As the sun rose behind an overcast sky, the first boat to the island (Ihla Grande) was at 8am, so we sat around in the tourist office drinking black sweet coffee with Laerte, who had lived in New York and Boston and amongst other things had worked in Dunkin Donuts. His advice was great but i am sure he embellished alot of things. Anyway half way through our crossing, the sky turned black ... read more

Thursday 17th April 9am still felt too early but got up for brekkie, then came back to my room and sorted most of my stuff out. Bag is getting pretty full now but doesn't seem worth posting anything back. 11am head out for a last look at town, decide to buy the hammock I looked at yesterday although not sure how I'll get it back. Post Office (2.2kg) is too expensive... By 12 have been on the internet and checked out of my room. 3 taxis were en route and soon we were at the bus station and getting the local bus to Angra (bus was full of school kids). Just over 2 hours later we're in Angra and walk 5 minutes to the ferry where we have a half-hour wait (find freshly cooked corn from ... read more

Wow. What can I say about this place? We left Rio on an overcast day to head down to Ilha Grande on the coast. We were warned against it because the slightly dodgy weather (by this i mean, clouds rather than bright blue sky) as the island has very little except for beautfiul beaches for entertainment. So after managing to catch one of the slowest buses in the world to the bus terminal, we got the last possible bus that would get us to the ferry in time to make the crossing to Ilha Grande. The full trip took around 4hrs and the weather still looked pretty depressing. Luckily though, we got up on Thursday to beautiful sunshine and went to a beach named within the Worlds Top 10 - Praia Lopes Mendes. It was breath-taking ... read more

With his head in the clouds! Having arrived in Rio, I made my way to the Hotel, throughout the 30min journey it wouldn´t stop raining. There was little time to explore Rio and we left the morning after but before then I walked down to Cobacabana, Rio´s streets approach mountains a contrast to the city life. Took a bus to Ilha Grande (big Island) had a good start to the trip with drinking Capriana´s throughout the night on the beach. Took a days boat trip around the Island fuelling our 24hr drinking with even more Capriana´s met another group of backpackers and went back to the main square to see some samba club which is nothing but a hazed memory but an experience nonetheless. Now at Paraty with another day of beaches planned for tomorrow and ... read more

It was a fantastic start to our time in South America, as we enjoyed three world class attractions in our first three or so weeks on the continent - Easter Island, the Rio Carnaval and Iguazu. Easter Island is now known as Rapa Nui by its inhabitants, but one of its early Polynesian names was ´Te pito o te henua´ or "The Navel/Bellybutton of the World", so-called because of its isolated position in the southern hemisphere. The island is part of Chile and lies 3,600 km off the west coast of South America, and over 2,000km from the nearest inhabited landmass, Pitcairn island (a British Overseas Territory where in 1790, the mutineers of the Bounty and their Tahitian companions settled). Easter Island is famous for stone statues, or moai, built to honour the islanders´ ancestors. Our ... read more

We know we already claimed we found Paradise two blogs ago, and we hate to sound like brats, but we are pretty sure this time, we found Paradise. For real. The final leg of our Brazil trip was spent on the famed Costa Verde, the coastline between Rio de Janeiro and the Sao Paulo state. The Costa Verde can be described as hundreds of miles of tropical coastline and islands with one perfect beach after another. After a 2 hour drive south from Rio down the Costa Verde and a 1.5 hour boat ride, we arrived at the lush and laid back Ilha Grande. We stayed in the small port town of Abraao, the only major settlement on the entire island. The port town has lots of boats and dessert carts, but not a single automobile ... read more

During my time in Rio de Janeiro - I took two trips to the big island - Ilha Grande - it sounds so natural in Portuguese but translated "Big Island" - clumsy. It is virtually road and car free, a natural relaxed paradise just a few hours from the hustle of big city Rio. For most of it's history as part of the country of Brazil Ilha Grande was a high security prison - off limits to the public, the military personal posted there must have loved the experience, the prisoners, loathed it - tiny dark damp cells with the promise of island paradise just a few inches behind the walls. Ilha Grande continued as a prison until 1994 - and then was opened up for tourism - as a result it is pristine. The island ... read more

Kazza says From the moment we read about it in the travel books we knew we wanted to visit the island retreat of Ilha Grande. The island's history fascinated us: first it was a hideout for pirates, then a lepor colony and finally a prison for some of Brazil's most violent criminals. All that remains of these now are some ruins amidst tropical beaches and virgin Atlantic rainforest. First we travelled on a scenic bus journey 4 hours down the coast from Rio, it is not called the Costa Verde for nothing, the shades of green are neverending, I guess because of the combination of lots of rain and lots of sun! We arrived at Angra dos Reis (the town where the ferry left from) from Rio having met two Ozzies on the bus journe, so ... read more

With so many awesome memories of Rio, sat on the bus winging our way away from there, it was hard not to feel a little down. The carnaval was for me one of the real highlights I was looking forward to during my time out here and it certainly didn´t disappoint. Of course im not one to dwell on the past...well except for that time I had my pants pulled down in the school library in front of everybody, unfortunately that haunting memory will stay with me forever. At least im not bitter! So with renewed vigour we made our way to Ilha Grande, a small island off the south coast of Brazil. Time for a spot of rest and relaxation! Clearly this was too much to ask for as we ran into difficulty straight away ... read more
