In Ilha Grande you will find abundant nature, jungle, incredible beaches, good wave etc etc.... Where is Ilha Grande * Brazil, Southeast region, Rio de Janeiro state, Angra dos Reis district. * From Rio de Janeiro about 180 Km - 3 hours by bus to Angra dos Reis (9€) around 10 am, then you take the ferry 1.5-2 hours by boot (2€) to Ilha Grande at 3.30 pm. To get to the ferry take the bus from the bus terminal called "Circular" (which goes the opposite way first), you can also walk but I would not recommend that in the heat :( The ferry was quite enjoyable but a bit too long with uncomfortable seats and gasoline smell throughout the journey. A more luxorious and faster version would be to take the catamaran for around 7€. ... read more

Okay Parati was awesome!! It's so similar to Colonia in that it's a fairly small town with stone rock roads and beautiful beaches. I was soooo exhausted after the bs ride but I actually managed to get about 7 or 8 hours sleep on the bus which is pretty damn good going. 1st and only full day in Paraty was a tour of some re natural attractions of the area. It was a little overcast with occasional showers but the beach was really nice. By far the best part was the natural waterslide, which is essentially a huge angled rock sloping downwards in a river with lots of moss on it. It was so much fun! There were some locals going down it standing up and doing twists and moving at an incredibly fast rate! It ... read more

Arriving in Heeo we found Reef and Emelie hanging in the hostel in Botafogo with some tattooed Swedes. We thought they'd be shaking their things at some favela funk party, but a late finish at the Maracana watching Flamego had meant they'd missed their transport and were around to welcome us to the 'cidade maravilhosa' and to front some local currency for our cab fare. Happy days. We spent a day cruising Copacabana and the previously unfamiliar Downtown area. In Copa we were surprised by the ferocity of the pissing-down-rain and later by the knee deep rivers of run off in the streets. We weren't the only ones. Locals sheltering from the downpour or wading through the Venice-like waterways looked just as also bemused. Rubber sandals and beachwear turned out to be the perfect choice...shame that ... read more

Ubatuba was great! Our main-pupose was to have a relaxing time there, which didn´t occure though...Instead we kept busy almost every day (can´t imagina this is called ´holiday´, i´d say travelling is quite tough!). Annika was our contact in Ubatuba (Lahib´s friend´s mum) and she had organised a house for us to stay in on a very nice beach. Just a day or two after our arrival we decided to go out to Ilha Grande, a paradise island not far from there. And omg, how cute it was! Lucky we didn´t arrive in a tourist-ruch so it wasn´t too busy there. We met some nice guys staying in our poussada and headed to a hostelparty on teh first eve. Well ther we met four French guys who were staying on a sailing boat. Turns out two ... read more

Here in Ilha Grande I have finally found the Brazil I was dreaming of. This island is a tropical paradise. Today it was reasonably sunny and I hiked for two hours to a beach surrounded by trees. Both the trial through the tropical forest and the beach were amazing. I am not even a big fun of beaches but this one is impossible not to like. The quietness of the place and all the green around it make it a very special place. And it is only one of many, you could stay here for weeks on end. Unfortunately I only have a few days. Originally I had allocated two but I clearly need to stay at least three of four to explore a little bit more of this beauty that is around me. Tomorrow I ... read more

Today I finally left that house of sin that was my hostel in Rio and headed to Ilha Grande, a tropical island, a hundred and something kms from Rio. I love it here. I realise that no matter how beautiful a city is - and Rio is arguably one of the most beautiful cities in the world - it will never make me feel the same sense of peace and happiness that I get in smaller places. Actually, the island is anything but small - Ilha Grande means big island - as it has over 80 beaches, but the actual town is tiny and quiet and the rest is just sand and green. I only have to hope that the weather will be nice tomorrow and that I will be able to explore all this natural ... read more

Well I am finally leaving this island of paradise tomorrow. The moment I stepped off of the boat I knew it was perfect for me right now. There are no cars on the island and no banks (this is a good thing otherwise I think I may have got stuck here for about 6 months!). It feels like what I imagine a carabean island would feel like - people are happy, smiling and warm and there is regae and samba music all the time. It is no surprise that Brazilians have the bums that they do because they really know how to shake it!! I love dancing here - no one ever looks at me strangley when I am really getting into it. It also looks remarkably like the island in Lost. It is covered in ... read more

I´m really excited as we sit on the ferry at the port Angra dos Reis, waiting to meet our friends. Jason and Nathalie are over for a 2 week holiday, Sharif and Emelie are right at the start of their year´s adventure. It´s surreal to watch them walk across the port towards the boat...after almost 3 months away it´s strange and wonderful to see their familiar faces. We´re headed for Ilha Grande, an island just south of Rio. It´s got a strange history as a 16th Century pirates´ lair, then a leper colony and most recently, til the 90´s, a prison for Brazil´s most dangerous criminals. Sounds inviting! But the upshot of this unhappy past is that the island remains undeveloped, boasting virgin rainforest and countless pristine beaches, including Lopes Mendes which is rated as one ... read more

At the moment I am using internet daily but maybe later it might be much less than that. Yesterday I got a new room mate. His name is Lasslo and he is a hungarian film maker. He has just been in the jungle shooting 50 days of live tv as they were making the Hungarian version of '' I'm a celebrity - get me out of here'' Kind of like survivor but with hungarian celebrities! He is here to chill before going home to Hungary. There are also 2 french / american guys staying here who are in town for a friends wedding in Rio and have also come to the island to chill out. We all hung out last night over a few beers (I had 2 !!). Today (after my standard breakfast of a ... read more
