Ilha Grande - Brazil´s grand island

We were wistful leaving Rio de Janeiro given how much fun we had there, but the pretty boat ride (complete with dolphins playing in the sea) was enough to keep us entertained, combined with the reputation Ilha Grande has for being one of Brazil´s most stunning islands. What we found was just as expected, but for all the Australians reading this, the island is similar to the beaches back home which made it a little homesick for jean indeed! We did manage to squeeze in a few sights between bites and sausage dog spotting however....• City highlights: Flashy speedboat ride to 7 different beaches that included activities such as snorkelling with fishies in crystal clear blue water, climbing into a deep ravine to view the flourescent acquamarine water in an underwater cave, eating freshly shuckled oysters bought straight off the boat from local fisherman, and being led to snorkel through an underwater helicopter crash site.• Accommodation: 4/5. The pousada owners were lovely enough to upgrade us to a larger room! This combined with the delicious (hot!) breakfasts makes this spot one of our favourites so far.• Food: We´ve been sadly disappointed with the food on this island - especially given the exhorbitant prices we´ve had to pay for it; our hearts (and stomachs) were broken when we were stuck eating soggy chips and deep fried fish balls for lunch (misunderstanding of portuguese menu) whilst on our boat trip as we hadn´t taken enough money!• Misc: There are an alarming number of sausage dog cross breeds on this island! So far, we have spotted a rottwieler sausage dog, a pittbull sausage dog and there is a sausage dog with scoliosis that lives at our pousada.....all a bit weird but we´ve seen stranger things so far.
