So, we hopped on a bus from Bonito to Jardim, where we could transfer to a bus to go to Ponta Pura, at the border of Brazil. In Jardim, we lunched and went to an internet cafe. As the bus terminal was a good 2km from the town, we needed to catch a taxi back to the station. And all we could get were MotoTaxis - essentially taxis where you ride behind the driver actually on the motorcycle (and not on a cab connected to the cycle, as in Iquitos). The idea of this scared Sarah, but she hopped on and greatly enjoyed the ride (I did too, but I was not quite as freaked out - plus I had ridden on the back of a motorcycle before). We took our bus to Ponta Pura, a ... read more

So we spent the night in the hotel in anticipation of a 9AM bus to Bonito the next morning. The laundromat didn´t open at 8 as planned, but we still were able to get the laundry, and we also caught a bus at 11AM with a very efficient bus company, Cruzero Do Sul - we arrived in Bonito exactly when we were supposed to. And Carlos, the driver of the Hostel picked us up as soon as we arrived. But the hostel turned out to be three blocks from the main road, not three blocks from the town as Israel, the guy at the Campo Grande hostel who had booked our reservation indicated. The town was a good 2km away. We arrived in town at 4, tired and hungry, and unable to truly satisfy our hunger, ... read more

Dec 25th-26th: We left the Pantanal and after a 5 hours bus trip down a dirt road we are now in Bonito which is a cute little town with pristine spring fed rivers. We spent Christmas here and went to dinner with our German friends whose names allude us. Today we went snorkelling down a river with crystal clear water and an abundance of fish life. What we plan to do tomorrow could be perhaps the pinnacle of our trip, we are heading to Paraquay home of the contraband and every fake good imagineable. They have Dolcy and Gabbany, Diezel, Addiddiddas, Nikee, Prady, Tippany, DVD´s , perfumes etc. It´s a cheap skates Mecca, which is why I´m particularly excited. I plan to buy alot of quality merchandise. Anyway that´s my contribution for the next few weeks. ... read more

We left Ilha Grande on a Private boat, rather than the public ferry which we took to get there. When we returned to Angra Dos Reis, we had wanted to take a bus to Sao Paulo, where we could spend the night, but the next bus was sold out. We could have taken a night bus there, but we decided instead to push forward to Campo Grande, where we could catch a bus to Bonito, Sarah´s whole reason for wanting to come to Brazil. So, we set off from Angra Dos Reis to the town of Barra Mansa, where we would then transfer to a bus for an 18 hour ride to Campo Grande. As we only had sandwiches from a fast food place called MAX Burger to tide us over, we arrived very hungrily. We ... read more

We spent a few days relaxing in the eco holiday town of Bonito where we had a great time watching hundreds of fish of all colours and sizes whilst snorkelling in the Rio Do Prata. A relaxing experience with no effort required, we just lay there in our wet suits and let the river current do all the work. After Bonito it was off to Foz do Iguacu and two days of exploring the huge and awe inspiring Iguacu Falls which lie on Brazil´s southern border with Argentina. The first day we spent viewing the falls from the Brazillian side with its panoramic views of the huge sequence of waterfalls. The next day we went back over the border to Argentina (steak sandwiches for lunch again - yes!) where it is possible to get really close ... read more

Today (13/10/07) we arrived via nite bus to beautiful Bonito in Brazil at about midday. we checked into the HI hostel and watched the England v France rugby semi final with some french. It was tense for a while but eventually we won. Ya that means we are in the final and have to watch the game tomorrow to see who we are up against. If it is Argentina in the final then we will be trying to get back to Argentina to watch the final. No one here in Brazil is particularly interested in rugby so its going to be hard to find a place showing it. anyway, more importantly, what ive been doing. Well, we chilled out by the pool for the rest of the day and cooked our own food and enjoyed sleeping ... read more

Well hopefully travelblog.org has all their problems fixed now so I can update everyone on my life down here in South Pantanal! Last week was full of its ups and downs to say the least but I have learned to live life on a day to day basis all while enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Last Tuesday Hudson was the only student to show up for English class. It also ended up being Hudson’s last class because he moved back to the city on Wednesday. After about 2 hours of working with the irregular verbs we decided to ride his motorcycle to one of the other lodges, Cordilheira. At first I was pretty nervous because no one at Caiman wears helmets (or seatbelts) and it was about a 20-minute ride down a bumpy dirt road! ... read more

Greetings from South Pantanal! I just finished up my 3rd English class today! I have found teaching to be very rewarding both emotionally and physically. I am supposed to be focusing on the field guides but all of them have been at another lodge all week. So all of my students so far have been the kitchen staff, wait staff, bar staff, and the nurse. I am a lot more happier and healthier feeling now that I have become friends with the kitchen staff for the guest. The food they feed the staff here is very different than what they serve the guest. The staff’s cafeteria serves very hearth meals that only consist of rice, beans, beef or chicken, and either raw cabbage or lettuce leafs for both lunch and dinner. Breakfast is sliced white bread, ... read more

So after our trekking in the Pantanal I headed south 5 hours by minibus to Bonito with the Scandinavians and Spanish couple I'd been hanging out with. Bonito is a typical Brazilian village in the middle of nowhere. The roads for most of the journey were dust tracks and it made for a bumpy ride but I was getting used to this by now! Bonito is most known for the several crystal clear rivers that run by it. You jump in at the top and float down the river admiring all the different fishes - pretty straight forward really! There are also several pretty cool caves there. We checked into the Bonito Hostel International which was real nice compared to some of the other places I'd been staying at - and a pleasant change from ... read more
