So having left Rio without managing to see any of the major sights, although neither of us would have changed our time there for the world, we headed off the Campo Grande from where we were hoping to arrange a tour to the Pantanal, which are the largest wetlands on earth, not far off the same size as Great Britain! Our original plan was to try and do them on our own, making it a lot cheaper in the process, but we felt that we must keep moving and so figured for the time saved a tour was probably worth it. On arrival in Campo Grande, a large town at the edge of the Pantanal, we quickly found a tour, one that had previously been recommened to us, which included one night in the hostel there ... read more

oops! have been very slack of late! i have fallen into the Brazilian trap and abandoned all thoughts of anything other than Capirinha´s, the beach, the sun and having fun! After skydiving we went to the north Argentina to Puerto Igazu and saw the waterfalls which were wonderful. As soon as we arrived (overnight) we woke to tropical landscapes and a definate different feel to it, just by the architecture and the way people went about their lives. Could tell we were near the brazilian/paraguay border. Stayed in a very cool hostel, with huge pool. Relative luxary for me and laura in a small dorm. needless to say we stayed longer than we thought (there was a pool!!!!) but spent 3 days exploring the falls from both the argentinian and Brazilian side. The falls were immense, ... read more

Saludos a todos! I hope all is well where ever you guys are at. The travels have been going well. Still in Brazil. After Sao Luis, we decided to visit some national parks and do some sightseeing and swimming. We had enough of big cities....for now at least. Below is a summary of the towns we visited. Sao Luis: So, Homer and I are sitting at a local bar/restaurant. We're outside on the sidewalk where tables are set up. Drinking some brews....checking out the scene and people watching. A waiter comes up and hands Homer a note. The note was in Portuguese, but it basically said, "Hey, everything good?", signed with the initials J.R. Homer started glowing. He was speechless. Someone told the waiter to hand Homer the note. There was people all around us. We ... read more

We are in Campo Grande, the capital of Matto Grosso do Sul. it is a city in a sort of bland lowland area, surrounded by cattle ranches and has a distinct wild west feel about it. lots of cowboy boots and john wayne wannabe´s! Got really over-excited because we read in the guidebook that there is a museum, called museo dom busco, that is mainly taxidermy animals, 10,000 insects and butterflies etc. So we got up early especially to find this place, wondering the streets in the heat for hours... only to find that the damn place is moving location. thats bad timing! On the topic of animals... we found the most amazing shop, Planeta. from the outside it looked like woolies but as we moved into the depths we heard the noise of a waterfall... ... read more

Monday, Jan 13. The town of Bonito is fairly surrounded by clear water rivers, springs, waterfalls and other similar tourist attractions catering to trekkers and “eco tourists.” Today we traveled about 50 miles South of Bonito to snorkel and swim in the Rio da Prata river. This attraction, owned by a local “farmer” who owns about 3000 acres, has a well developed facility catering to visitors, with a snack bar and curio shop, picnic facilities, and well developed trails to and from the river. Sunscreen and bug repellent are not allowed, as they may contaminate the water, and the guide told us that the government strictly regulates the number of visitors daily and inspects frequently to insure that the ecology is maintained in its pristine condition. Fortunately for us we arrived in a very dry period, ... read more
