The Pantanal; the journey here was something of an adventure in itself. The Indiana tours people picked us up from the hotel and drove us to Corumba bus station where we were put on a bus for Campo Grande. 2 hours in we got off and met the rep from Pousada Santa Clara and loaded ourselves, and our bags, into the back of a small truck. 30 minutes down a dirt track we reached the first major bridge which had collapsed in the middle. Out of the truck, into a little boat, 5 minutes across the river, and into the back of a larger truck. The driver plainly has the best seat and we bounce around in the back hanging onto our stuff while trying to spot wildlife. We see some wild boar, deer hiding in ... read more

Keeping it brief as i'm typing this on my phone via wifi. Lots to tell, can't wait to get to a pc! Last night was a little surreal - the bus drove for an hour and a half on dirt roads to get to Bonito, but the town is actually really cool. Met a couple of folks who are doing this properly - over a year in south america, now that's some real self development time! Went tombstoning in one of the local rivers today and got obscene amounts of water up my nose. The platform was about 5m above the river and scared the bejesus out of me, so I did it 3 times. Right, off to catch some dinner!... read more

Ok, so i've spent a couple of days in the world's largest wetland, except the guide tells us he has never seen it so dry. I flew rio to sao paulo (sorry, i'm on the phone again) and on to campo grande - the "d" is a 'juh' sound, about 500 miles inland. From there it was basic hotel with a fan and a dodgy computer, then a 6 hour coach ride towards bolivia. Then another hour up a dirt road to the fazenda, where we were greeted by a cacophany - mostly parakeets. On the way over i'd already seen a toucan, a howler monkey, a couple of rheas and the stork, along with countless herons, egrets and hawks - oh, and a caiman, but now the wildlife hunt really began! First was a tour ... read more

Bonito is a small 1 street town which is geared up to the tourists but it is still pretty nice. As we are in the low season it was like a ghost town. We booked on a trip snorkelling which takes you 2.5km down a crystal clear river and has lots of colourful fish. After a short truck ride there was a 40 minute trek through the wilderness and we saw a Capuchin monkey playing around and some of the guys ate termites which apparently tasted like peanuts! The current was strong in the river so you didn´t need to swim at all ' just let the current take you down the river at a very nice pace. I am so glad for my waterproof camera in situations like this and i got some good photos ... read more

This is the first opportunity I have had to post from the Pantanal as the internet service here was down. This is my fourth day here at Pousada Ararauna, a lovely lodge located 150 km from Campo Grande, in Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil. We have spent our days here sitting on the banks of the Rio Negro watching and taking notes on the behavior of the giant and neo-tropical otters. Other days, we travel in canoes or motorboats collecting scat, looking for dens, and looking for otter activity. There are over 400 bird species here and countless other animals to view and enjoy. Below are some pictures to enjoy and just a sampling of the flora and fauna to be found at this incredible place. Tomorrow, we travel to Campo Lourdes to join the bat ... read more

Everybody we've met said we must go to Bonito - so we backtracked a couple of hundred km to do it, was the right choice. The main attractions are the rivers which are crystal clear and full of fish. We chose the Rio Sucuri - it was awesome. You're kitted out with wetsuit, mask and snorkel then dropped into the river near it's source, then you drift downstream for ~ an hour, about 2km, before they take you back out for a great lunch. We saw all sorts of fish, birds, more monkeys - fantastic. Unfortunately no photo's but for us another unforgettable experience. ... read more

Hi all, I have to keep this fairly short so apologies for lack of detail. So I ended up staying for 4 days in the Pantanal. It was an incredible experience. The tour was with ecological expeditions. We stayed on a farm in the middle of nowhere, about 15 mins from the main road and quite close to a long river. 1st day was mostly taken up with travel. 2nd day we went on a morning boat trip down the river and saw many colourful animals and birds. The river was littered with Caimen and they took the boat really close! We then went pihrana fishing after lunch (i caught the most - 6 pihrana and 4 other fish!) before cleaning and gutting them and sending them to be cooked for dinner. We then went on ... read more

SO SORRY FOR THE DELAY, EXPECT 2 MORE LARGE ENTRIES SOON, AND I WILL TRY TO POST MORE OFTEN!! BEIJOS AMIGOS!! So i sat in the waiting room for my plane in Campo Grade, heading to Recifi. Oje vou embora (portuguese for i~m leaving today) I sat with a tight squeeze in my heart, a sadness and a longing. I wanted so much to stay and spend more time with everyone I had grown to love. I had arrived in Campo Grande earlier that day by bus and Ada, Adilson's mom was already there to meet, a truly lovely, lovely, lovely, wonderful, warm, and loving women. I didn't see her at first, and my thought as I got off the bus to grab my pack back was -ok, where am I? Where can I go to ... read more

Had 3 amazing days in the Pantanal. Went the whole hog on the camping option, chose a tent instead of an indoor hammock, glad we did, even though it was fairly cold one night and the showers were at natural temperature. The tent was right next to the river - which was full of caiman (a kind of crocodile or alligator) and piranha, the trees were full of parrots, eagles, toucans and other exotic birds, and the sky was full of stars - simply incredible !!! On our jeep safari we saw monkeys, deer, foxes, capybara, iguana, giant storks, wild otters and best of all a big (2.5m - 3m) anaconda. Also did river trips, horse riding and fishing - where Atsuko showed me up by catching 4 good sized piranha to my null point :-( ... read more
