Corumba was just a stop-off city for us where we could book our tour into the heart of the Pantenal. We took a walk in the city anyway and found it to be quite pretty, especially the view of the river Paraguai. We met up with our Aussie friends and booked our tour with Greentrack (Breno's tour company). The aussies had booked themselves into a nice hotel with a pool so we turned up with gin, tonic and a bag of limes and sat by their pool for the evening. On our way home we passed a band playing in the plaza, practising in preparation for the following day's festival. We hung around for a bit to see what was going on but it was a case of early to bed early to rise in preparation ... read more

The journey from La Paz to Brazil was taken on the Death Train, named such because of the fate of anyone who tried to ride the journey on the roof for free. The journey was 15 hours long starting at Santa Cruz at 5pm and arriving at Quijarro at 10am the following morning. At 4.55 the train was still quite empty which puzzled us as we had not been able to get seats together. At 4.57 there was suddenly a mad panic as the rest of the passengers boarded the train - now it was full. We asked a man if we could change seats which started a swap-shop as many other people in our carriage were not seated next to their amigos. The train was quite luxurious with cama seats, air conditioning and plenty of ... read more

Hi bloggers! Thanks for everyone that keeps in touch, it's great! We have just had our underwater cameras developed so here are some photos for your viewing pleasure. There are some from one of the top 10 beaches in the world, Lopez Mendez, Brazil. Some from when we floated down a river in Bonito. Some from the Argentinian side of the Iguazu falls and from dolphin swimming in New Zealand. ... read more

Day 13, 14 & 15 After Ascuncion, we spent the whole day and half the night travelling on a horrible bumpy sweaty bus back into Brazil (it´s not all glamour you know!!) However once we arrived in Bonito we were happy as we were staying in a really nice lodge. We chilled out on the first day and went to a beautiful natural swimming pool with a couple of little waterfalls and a zip slide. it was really peaceful and relaxing. However the highlight was that we got to feed some wild monkeys pieces of banana! They came down from the trees and grabbed it and then ran off and ate it! How cool! In the evening we sampled the local dish - ALIGATOR!! It was nasty! Chewy and fatty and made everyone have weird dreams ... read more

We arrived yesterday after 4 buses and 20 hours on the road! We were well tired. Great hostel, got hamocks, pool, relaxing area all outside (as it is warm up north) all for 5quid each a night. So we are in Bonito, yes we changed our route, it´s a little town in the middle of no where, near Bolivia (look it up!) There is one main road through it and all the other roads are dirt tracks. Just chilled out last night after checking out the ´town´and booking a tour for tomorrow. Today we were up at 6.50am as we were being picked up at 7.30. We were going to go and float down a river, I know that doesnt sound so good but wait, this had been recomended by a south african couple we met ... read more

Ive just spent a couple of days here in Bonito in the South of Brazil. It's quite a touristy town where alot of Brazillians come on holiday. I can understand why its called Bonito becasue it's really beautiful here. The town is'nt anything special, but then it is the low season but the surrounding countryside is gorgeous. I got the bus from Corumba with the english couple, benji and hannah, i met in the Pantanal. We took a trip to the Rio Prata together where we floated down river for an hour in wetsuits and snorkels. The river was totally stunning and full of colourful fish and plants. It was really peaceful and if you got fed up of fish you could float along on your back and look up into the trees and see monkeys ... read more

Well first things frist, we~ve put up a load more photos, including our Pantanal trip ones, so check them out. We put the Bonito ones on the Pantanal blog, and vise versa... by mistake. We´ve now departed sunny Bonito and arrived in sunny Curumba - it´s been consistenty in the 30s the last few days. Tans are coming on nicely, and a little bit of sunburn too - even though laura was wearing factor 50, grr. Anyway, as we said before, Bonito was just a dirty track, basically. We saw people quad biking around the place which looked like fun, but we decided against it as you can do it anywhere, and on Friday went ´tubing´down a river of the clearest water we have ever seen! even in the deepest parts you could see all the ... read more

Bonito is beautiful. The dust roads stretch through town like an Oxfam advertisement, yet the local economy is booming thanks to the diamond-clear idyllic waters flowing in scenic forest nearby. We stumbled off the night-bus, knackered. Travelling is exceptionally tiring anyway, and especially so on a budget where one’s feet are the primary method of transportation and map-reading suffers due to disturbed sleep in noisy dorm rooms. When time is tight, the urge to fill every waking hour with activity is so strong that the traveller eventually finds themselves so completely knackered that there is no option but to do nothing. Like in school, too much learning causes lethargy, and without a break it becomes a chore rather than an activity. But then you stumble upon a place like Bonito. So charming and relaxing that nothing ... read more

April 11th, Day Four Yesterday, after settling into the hotel in Bonito (around 6 PM), I had enough time to think and decide what to do in the 3 or 4 days that I plan to stay here. Bonito has a relatively sophisticated touristic "ecosystem". It seems to be very hard to book a trip to any of the attractions without the support of a local tour agency. Agencies act as client relationship managers and help tourists understand what every attraction has (and has not) and book them for them. Bonito has also a good cohort of Tour Guides. These are trained individuals (accredited with Brazil's tourism agency - I think its called Embratur) that usually meet the tourists at the agency and take them (or join them if the tourists have a car, as ... read more

Greetings to one and all. I won´t write much but I will post some more piccies. Iguassu from the Argy side was incredible again. We started with a 4x4 drive through the jungle then went on the jet boat. I enjoyed that sooo much - riding the rapids the wrong way at speed was fun. And then the boat pulled up right under the spray from the falls and we got a tad wet. We also went for a boat tour of the wetlands at the top of the falls and saw a caimen. From Iguassu we spent a couple of days driving to Bonito where today we went snorkelling in a crystal clear river teaming with fish. Ness was in her element (I wasn´t really surprised when she grew flippers). Enjoy the photos. Viv & ... read more
