It's official. Surfing is the hardest thing I've ever done. Maybe not physically, but definitely mentally... I'm not use to something taking so long to learn - oh, beside Portuguese that is :( People compare it to snowboarding, but I think it is so different. It isn't necessarily up to you or your capabilities. So much is out of your control and left to mother nature. The shape of the wave, the wind, the tide. Some days I get so frustrated at myself because I think I'm not where I should be after 3 months. And then I go back into shore and one of the guys told me they were some of the biggest waves he's ever surfed and I think, "ok. Maybe I'm not THAT bad." At least I was out there having a ... read more

Hier kann... read more

A very short blog this time, just to say we arrived in Salvador and did a whistle stop through the cobbled streets checking out the old and sometimes a bit derelict buildings. All brightly coloured which complemented the outfits of the Bahian ladies all dressed up, ready to give a show of their moves. Describing Salvador is quite difficult as its got the beaches, colonial old town, modern new town but from looking at it all none of it is just quite as polished as other places with the same and maybe that makes it easier to skip. However one thing you can certainly say about the place is its got a vibe..... There's music and rhythm everywhere, which makes it smiley everywhere you go! Definitely worth a few hours meandering and the two hour flight ... read more

Here we go with a few more photos, Clare and I had a very quiet day yesterday, just watched movies and read our books. It was the first day we had not done anything so it was nice - mind you. Today we went wuith Francesco up the coast to the Tamar turtle project, Praia do forte, which was really good. They have been open since 1984 and since then have managed to save or I believe breed 11,000,000 turtles which is really quite impressive. They have vaiety of big ones to look st which are sadly swimming in smallish pools, but we gather after a year they are released back to the ocean. Enjoy the photos. We are off early to Rio tomorrow so the next update will be from Copocabana! Just a note - ... read more

Well as I start this Mum is on the mend, ventilator tubes out, drains, plugs wires and other extranous bits are out. It was nice to hear her voice , I did not speak to her for long as she was drifting in and out, either I was boring and poutting her to sleep or it was the drugs and surgery. Sharon is doing a stunning job looking after Mum, the pressure must be intense. As I said to her all she has is my support, this is while I drink beer at the beach and enjoy the sun. Well we are just leaving the north, the Route of Emotion which is what we have been on. We had a day in the dunbe buggies, we went to Lagos Paradiso and had a swim then onto ... read more

We seem to count the full moons that pass here in Itacare and I have now seen 4, including the full moon of May which was dubbed “Super-Moon”. I suppose it is actually 5 if I include the one I was here for in February when I first passed through for 5 days. Within a week of posting my last blog and celebrating 6 months of unemployment, I somehow picked up work and started a new job less than a week later as an English Teacher (yes – I’m still in Brazil!). For those of you who didn’t know, last year I did an internationally recognised online certificate before I left Australia to Teach English as a Second Language (TESL). It is one of those things I have always wanted to do but never ... read more

Wasnt gonna write about Salvador because only here for one day as a way to get to Morro de Sao Paulo but has been an experience so can be a side blog. Dont have any photos of it either, as we were warned by soooo many people not to take cameras out, so we didnt! Got up early and got ready in 7 mins for the taxi to get to the airport, was tiny airport and us having an hour there was way more than we needed! So got another poo escapade; went to the loo towards the end of the flight and the air steward came into the toilet and told me to go back to my seat, i was like errrrrr........ So yeh it was locked, he unlocked it and hurried me up! Got ... read more

We have gone north to avoid the storms and catch some rays! Has a 20 bus ride but wasnt too bad, just read and slept really, so nothing interesting to report there..... Staying in an apartment with honesty, sophie and hungdaddy which is nice, taxi driver had to get directions from a creepy american man (he was actually very nice we were just being cynical!), and we have my speakers from thailand blasting (yes they still work - heroic) and eating homemade ratatouile. Probs dip in the sea or pool tonight as its warm and they are pretty nearby! Holy mongoose had the worst reaction to the pool! Have never been so itchy in my life, was not relaxing at all, haha so probs will avoid the pool from now on. Taught the girls how to ... read more

Dear Diary, I’m sorry for not writing to you in such a long time. You’ve been on my mind, I swear! I just have a special talent of procrastination – even over here I cannot shake it!! So after being in Itacare for 6 weeks now, I have discovered it is definitely a unique place and I am finding out the more I stay here, the people in this town are quite unique along with it! Last week I made a 6hr round-trip to the closest ‘big town’ Ilheus and extended my visa with the Federal Police. Considering my (very!) basic Portuguese I think I did quite well and now have another stamp in my passport for another 3 months - YAY! All done on day 89 of a 90 day visa! Lucky for me I ... read more
