Hello all! It´s time for a first real blog update! A lot has happened since I´ve arrived here so I hope to be able to summarize it neatly. The moment I arrived in Salvador I realized how two-sided things are here. People are extremely relaxed and friendly, but they also realize the dangers of the city since there is a lot of Poverty around. I stayed in a hostel called Nega Maluca, which means ´crazy black woman.' It´s located in Santo Antonio, just outside of the Pelourinho, which is the historical center of Salvador. Incidentally it´s also in the middle of a favela. In other words not the safest of places to be. During the day it´s fine though, there is a lot of Police around to keep it safe for the tourists. But at night ... read more

Yesterday I arrived safely in Salvador, Brazil! So just a quick update on what's happening here: I'm staying in a chilled out hostel that serves (apparently great) breakfast - yay! I arrived into 25 degree weather in the evening - yay! I have a cold - not yay :( Oh and Salvador is HUGE. It took forever to arrive in the center by bus from the airport. So there must be a lot to see.... read more

21.09.2011 Our first day in Brazil..arrived in Salvador, bags here, we are here, happy days..until no banc machine would work with our card..we tried about 8 different ones and with no cash to change we were a bit stuck.. fortunately we found another atm outside the airport which finally gave us our first 50 Brazilien Rais.. We decided to couchsurf for the first few days in Salvador, so we had to jump onto a local bus that took us to Cabca D'Agua, some suburb in salvador (pretty ghetto we found out later.. lol) the bus journey was an adventure of its own, 2.5 hours on a rampacked bus..and with rampacked I mean it was so full that people who couldnt fit in the bus anymore would hang on to the bus from the outside at full ... read more

After running (and almost missing) our bus from Rio, we spent a leisurely 18 hours on a bus to Brasilia, Brazil´s capital. Despite having bought the cheapest tickets, the bus was great with ample leg room and good drivers. We soon discovered, however, that Brasilians have a bad habit of listening to music from their cellphones at any volume level and at any time of the day or night. We arrived in Brasilia to what reminded me of a bit of India - a chaotic bus terminal and no one really knowing what was happening. Our Ruigh Guide book let us down by leading us to a closed down hostel, another that didn~t answer their doorbell and a third very pricy one. We finally found something. Brasilia is a hot, dry, dusty city and we were both ... read more

Oppression of the Masses There has been torrential rain and the roads of ´Bairro da Paz´ are inaccessible. 70,000 inhabitants live in this ´district´, one of Salvador´s biggest. All are thrown into disarray. Children cannot get to school, their parents are forced to miss a day of work, jeopardising their child’s education and their employers´ trust. Everything is a struggle; the roads within the area are just formed of mud and thus prone to becoming little more than swamps flanked by houses during the rainy season. Little more than a kilometre away a bridge has fallen on the road ´Paulo Jackson´. This makes the journey for patrons of both the AABB sports club and the Spiritualist centre roughly ten minutes longer by car. The two receive approximately 500 members of the public per week who now ... read more

Las mujeres aquí sorprendentemente,no gustan ... read more
