Hi all, well here we are!! Where? I hear you ask…. At time of writing we are in Fortaleza in Brazil. We were supposed to be in Recife in Brazil but the authorities there wanted $500 for every Pilipino crew member on board – according to our captain that would have cost the cruise line thousands of Dollars. So no docking there and a quick change of course to this place ( Fortaleza). It is a seaside resort, much like Torremolenos (not that I have ever been there, but it is what I imagine it would be like) with great sun, long sandy beaches and mobbed – a bit like Girvan beach at the Glasgow fair. The update starts here: We left Glasgow and travelled to the midlands to stop for the night. The journey was ... read more

Everglades was fun – queuing for the coach to get on the tour wasn’t! Organised chaos. And once on the coach it was bloody freezing – really don’t like air conditioning. The German tour guide woman was a bit interesting but with the most grating voice but she did try hard. Once we got into the Everglades it was good tho – went on one of those hoveryboats – where the driver sits up high and passengers down below and it skims the water and the vegetation. Saw loads of crocs and alligators and as I learned alligators aren’t that dangerous cos they don’t like human meat whereas crocs do like to munch on us. Scott held a baby alligator ( he claims it wasn’t just a baby one – judge for yourselves from one of ... read more

Bahia minha vida Happy New Year bloggees, I'm pleased to have released my death-grip on 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo' long enough to update you all (I don't care how 2008 that is, I was late on the Stieg Larsson bandwagon). I'm even more pleased to announce that I have had no further contact with transvestite prostitutes nor grope-happy drivers. I never imagined that I would have to make these kind of declarations but hopefully 2011 will remain a sodomy-free year. Having said that, I must admit that I attended a Boxing Day Carnaval in which men dressed up as women and hit the town on the the huge floats and sound systems (known as trio eletricos) that seem to resonate through the shaking streets every other fortnight. There's no shortage of things to commemorate ... read more

Geo: -12.9755, -38.5123Today, Salvador was hot. Really hot. Burst your eyeballs and make the resulting puddle of ocular fluid evaporate kind of hot. Especially out in the sun, waiting to take the Elevador Lacerda down to Mercado Modelo, Salvador's big crafts (i.e. - tourist crap) market, located in Cidade Baixa, the lower part of Pelourinho. It's a little suffocating with the crowds, especially with today's heat, and is especially annoying with old ladies grabbing at you, trying to scam you. It's a common scam around the world, where they "give" you a cheap little bracelet, and they're quite aggressive about it if you ignore them, grabbing onto your wrist as you try and walk away. On a side note, how come the women in Floripa's nightclubs weren't so aggressive about grabbing at me? I definitely would ... read more

Geo: -12.9547, -38.3619For a country with so many beaches and such warm weather, the past three and a half weeks have been relatively devoid of time spent lounging around, sunning, and swimming. Today was likely the last chance to get in some beach time before heading home, so I wanted to take full advantage. A bunch of us headed out to Itapua, since it was only a short bus ride away and despite not knowing this at the time, gives me another funny story to tell! It's a beach frequented mostly by locals, so a group of international backpackers like us isn't exactly inconspicuous, which is usually a bad thing here. After we settled into a spot on the beach, Johan noted some locals hovering around in the background, perhaps will some ill intentions toward some tourists ... read more

South America » Brazil » Bahia » Porto Seguro January 6th 2011

After spending two nights in the most boring hostel I've ever been to, I realised that this wasn't the place for me. The city itself is dead during the night, and all hostels, hotels and pousadas are located outside the city. I can understand why, because the beaches of Porto Seguro itself are horrible. But stil, a 45 minute and R$ 3,50 bus ride to get to the hostel seemed a bit too much. There are a few little villages, and the hostel I was in, HI Maracaia, was located in Coroa Vermelha. Nothing bad about the beaches, you can't complain about something like this. There was a supermarket closeby, the beach just 5 minutes away, but for me it lacked something important. Life. Especially during the night there was nothing happening. And I'm talking about ... read more

19/12 (i know I am very far behind on my blog but I will make an effort now I promise to catch up!) Our Morro de Sao Paolo trip ended on a slightly sour note as the Brazilians, for the first time, became incredibly unhelpful. We booked a catamaran for 9am this morning and managed to sort out a 'taxi' to take our luggage to the port - we were there in plenty of time (in true british fashion) and we paid the ridiculous 62 cent tax to use the port. We were then sat waiting to get on the catamaran when a man came and asked to look at our tickets - and noted that he only had 2 of us (me and Amy) onhis list - even though my ticket clearly showed that we ... read more

I wrote this after the New Year, sorry for the delay in publishing! This time last year I was a quiet little mouse, falling as fast as Alice in Wonderland, down down down into the unknown. I was just existing, waking up after another restless night, going into work, and returning home to clear away the many brochures and information I had collated over the years in a bid to make my dreams come true; clinging onto them as if on the glossy pages were the answers to my questions. I didn’t feel that I had anything to say that anyone would listen to, so I hardly said anything, didn’t even meet with my friends. I pretty much hibernated last January, but it was an active hibernation because I never ever sit still. I knew I ... read more

Today Is NewYears Eve, And I call this email Bella Luna for two reasons. Now for the email… Today is beautiful! Rafi’s family is here (about 20+ people) with us at the beach house. All the ladies cook a dish or two and the men will do up the BBQ tonight. I am doing my moms Famous mash-potatoes!! We have spent most of the day at the beach swimming and snorkeling. I have made good friends with Rafi’s little cousin Arielly. She is a sweet girl, and Intelligent Wow!! She has learned and memorized everything I have said in English!!! I was making my potatoes around 5pm when I realized I needed more potatoes, Raf and I got on our bikes and headed to the village for the groceries. I went into one store to pick ... read more

Since last Wednesday I could feel that a change was happening to me. I could feel it inside and in every cell of my body. I had worked so hard at changing my life for the past 18 months, and now I felt that this part of the process has finished. I have changed. I have made it happen. I am now actually living this life I have been trying to attain, and now I feel like there is no going back, that whatever happens now, my life will not be the same as before. I do not know what lies ahead, I am definitely in unknown territory now! This week, life has yet again fascinated me with the twists and turns it has taken. I have met another great person, Stacey from New York. She ... read more
