I had met a group of British girls in Mendoza who were basically doing the same trip as me but in the opposite direction. “You’ll find things will get less and less developed the further you go north”, they told me. As our tour of the Uyuni Salt Flats crossed from Chile into Bolivia, this statement became apparent. While you got to continue on the asphalt road towards the Argentinian border, the turnoff to the Bolivian border was a dirt one. It was symbolic – it was time to go to a place less developed. Getting into the Toyota Landcruiser at the border that would be driving us across to Uyuni over the next three days, it was good to have our Mendoza crew together for the trip – me, Sybe, Fleur, Teo and Nicola. From San Pedro de Atacama, we booked a three-day Uyuni jeep tour with Atacama Mistica. A friend we made in Santiago recommended them after travelling with them, and a tour agency in San Pedro also highly recommended them, hence we decided to go with this reputable company. We were picked up from our hostel and taken to the border of Chile and Bolivia. Both the Chilean and Bolivian immigration was very quick as the queue was not very big. We were given sandwiches with Coca tea for breakfast; Coca tea is pretty big in the Atacama region of Chile and in places of higher altitude in Bolivia to help the body to acclimatise. The Coca leaf is used to make cocaine, but the leaves have other health properties, as I've just mentioned. The tea itself, once ... read more

I booked a 3 day tour which included a transfer into San Pedro de Atacama on the last day as my travels were continuing in Chile. I must admit that I only decided to go to Bolivia in order to see the salt flats after repeatedly being told how amazing it was, having not planned on entering the country originally so this tour had a lot to live up to! How I got there: I took the tourist bus from Todo Turismo which took 10 hours to reach Uyuni from La Paz. We arrived in Uyuni at 8:30am as the bus was delayed by a roadblock (common in Bolivia) so we boarded in La Paz at 10:30 instead of 9pm. At the bus terminal we got picked up by someone from Quechua connection & taken to ... read more

Distance driven today: 207 miles / 333 km Cumulative distance driven: 12,272 miles / 19,750 km Today’s trip: Ururo to Uyuni, Bolivia Involuntary gravel road driven: about 50 miles / 80 km Most difficult road *ever* driven: yes, definitely It’s an all too familiar story. We set out to ride a short distance, through what looks to be an easy road, and end up with a total adventure. Obviously, it happened again, but this time it was a true adventure of an unprecedented level, involving a physical and mental challenge like nothing Zoe and I have ever done before. Our goal today was to ride to Uyuni in southern Bolivia to do the one and only thing that people go there to do. We wanted to see the Uyuni salt flat, which is the world's largest ... read more

Hi Friends, family and bloggers, We are embarking on the Salt flats 3- day tour (all in one blog). Day One. So we woke up nice and warm in our room this morning, the little heater in the center of the room did its job and warmed everyone. We had to be a Thiago Tours office at 1030 to start our tour and meet our fellow companion’s. We had a shower in the morning and there was a free breakfast of toast and cereal, which was nice and unexpected. We were told we would be freezing most of the tour –day and night, so I went to the shop to purchase some gloves for £2 from a local shop. Classy llama ones!!! We finished packing, went to the shop to get snacks for the trip and ... read more

Hi All, As we were leaving Potosi today we decided to have a chilled morning, catching up on Internet, re-packing our bags and things like that. We went to for lunch at a little café we found near the main square; I had an omelet and Vick a pizza slice. Our bus was at 13:30 on the email confirmation we had, so we left Potosi at 12.30 to get to the terminal 30 mins early as normal…this is when things started to go wrong!!! The taxi driver took us to the wrong bus station, after we had worked that out (all in Spanish as no one spoke English), we got a taxi to the right station, (this one Vick panicked because a guy jumped into the passenger seat of the taxi just as we started to ... read more

Hello Friends, Today we started the Silver Mine tour at 9am, after a good breakfast of scrambled eggs and cereal. We had the opportunity to witness working conditions in one of the cooperative silver and zinc mines, the conditions are among the most grueling imaginable. We had plenty of guide books telling travellers not to underestimate the dangers involved in going into the mines and to consider the voyeuristic factor involved in seeing other people’s suffering. It definitely was at our own risks, and there were plenty of dangers with the stability of the mines, which had me terrified during most of the tour. Although we didn’t feel like we were prying on the workers, the miners are proud of their work in such tough conditions and generally happy for visitors to observe their toil. We ... read more

Hello People, Today we had nothing planned, and as it was a Sunday there wasn’t anything open for us to do anyway. We did have a walk around Potosi however, to discover there really isn’t much here! I wrote up a cover letter for P&O to apply to the Tours and Excursions department because Neil has been offered Arcadia from October. There is not a youth department onboard, so I’m going to see if I can work onboard Arcadia in the tours department instead. It could be a long shot to actually get the job and then specifying only for Arcadia. Who knows what the future holds. All I know is that I don’t want to be apart from him for 3 months, and I don’t particularly want to be an unemployed travel partner...but a world ... read more

Hola Everyone, Once again we had a lazy morning until we had to check out at 11am. We had our normal bread and honey and banana breakfast in the hostel. We then put our bags in the hostel storage and headed out to the cable car that is in La Paz, there are three different ones but we picked the one that went up the highest point to look down on the city. It’s only 6BOB return (60p) and you get spectacular views of the huge city with the snow-capped mountains looming in the distance. We also went over the graveyards; here they bury the dead above ground in buildings in rows. The pictures look cool and they’re even behind plastic glass! As we had all day to waste so we walked to the clothes markets, ... read more
