After my visit to the Perito Moreno Glacier, I thought it was time to get back on the hiking trail. This time, my adventures led me to El Chalten and to Mount Fitz Roy. El Chalten is a small hiking village accessible from El Calafate, which is surrounded by towering glaciers, crystal lagoons, vast lakes, and the ever-looming presence of mount Fitz Roy. This is quiet village is often deemed the "National Trekking Capital of Argentina," due to its unparalleled access to glacial terrain. The area is also known, however, for recreational climbing, camping, horseback riding, fishing, and rafting. It was an early morning start from El Calafate and a four hour bus ride to El Chalten. I befriended an Israeli couple on the bus and asked them if they wanted to hike together. The reply ... read more

Without much rest, Dain and I woke before sunrise to meet a group of people hiking to Glacier Torre. Our guide moved us quickly to meet Matis and Luis, who would be taking us on the Glacier for ice trekking. Now that the sun was up the snow stopped falling and the scenery was just beautiful. We crossed a fast moving, glacier fed river onto some steep terrain then over a small waterfall and back down. With the speed that Dain and I had developed from our Nalhua Huapi hiking, this group was frustrating and slow for us. We managed to make it to the Glacier and fixed on our feet a very fun set of crampons. The hiking on the Glacier was a key highlight of the trip for me. I love the crevices and ... read more

What luck we had on this bus ride. Dain completely jinxed the entire operation. As soon as he sat down on the bus he sarcastically crossed himself, by the time we were in El Bolson the bus had broke down. The passengers waited together and here we met our actuary friends from England, Chloe and Phil. As well as some students, not unlike ourselves, from California, Tasha and Morgan. While the bus was getting a belt replaced we all went out to lunch to a restaurant that serves trout ravioli and Argentinian famous ice cream! Another 6-8 hours of an unpaved road led us to the town Perito Moreno. We stayed the night here and almost missed our bus the following morning because we abandoned our pick-up point in sacrifice for some delicious pastries. After chasing ... read more

El Chalten is a very new, very dusty and sometimes very windy place and you would not dream of coming here unless you wanted to see the hills. The bus from El Calafate stops at the Parque des Glaciares info centre to give you a pep talk and a map. As the ranger says "at El Calafate you get the bus to see the glaciers, here you walk". The map is good as it gives you the estimated time for different walks and the amount of uphill involved. Checked in at our hostel and booked a table for dinner at the next door restaurant - as they have a curry style dish we didn´t want to miss. The chicken curry and rice turned out to be great. As the weather looked good we decided to do ... read more

Na otevrenejch mistech opet val neskutecnej ... read more

Autobus nas odvezl stepi do mestecka El Chalten. Koupili jsme vinko a sedli si k rece a pozorovali hvezdy, parada. Rano jsme vyrazili na turu okolo hory Monte Fitz Roy. Viviana sla na nekolik dni pod stan a vyrazila tudiz sama a driv, zatimco my se chteli vratit zpatky a pristi den vyrazit jinym smerem, k ledovci. Tesne pred tim, nez jsme vyrazili se zvednul vitr. A jakej vitr.

Like El Calafate, El Chalten is another Patagonian town that visitors are attracted to by its scenery. Near to the town is the Fitz Roy mountain range, which can be seen from the main street. It is not hard to see far from the town as it is tiny and only has about four streets running parallel to its main street. The town consists mainly of hotels, hostels and campsites; with the odd restaurant and cafe thrown in. El Chalten sits within the National Parque de las Glaciers, just like the glacier Perito Moreno, and therefore offers a lot of outdoor activities. I went on a day hike to Cerro Torres, which is one of the mountains in the range. We didn´t actually climb on the mountain but instead walked on the glacier in front of ... read more

... read more
